If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on public health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows? What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases? While reducing the international flows of people and goods would be perhaps the only foolproof way of halting the spread of diseases globally, I do not believe this is a viable option, and therefore do not think steps should be taken to implement it. It is not a practical plan for a couple of reasons. The flow of people and goods across national borders has become an integral part of the global economy, as well as part of our personal lives. People have built businesses that rely on the ability to trade globally - from online businesses, to large companies that export their goods to many different countries - and people have become used to the freedom of movement around most of the world that has been afforded to us by globalisation - through the spread of technology, and the spread of ideologies such as human rights, which allows us to travel to most countries in acceptable safety. Therefore, I imagine that reducing these flows would have to be done rather forcibly through government or international laws. This would likely cause political unrest, as people protest these measures, as well as economic instability, as the flow of goods is stymied by these laws. Some businesses would have to layoff workers, which would result in an increase in
The Centers for Disease Control is advertising a campaign that is trying to persuade people to get the flu vaccination shot for themselves and their children. It will be told what techniques they are using to persuade these people to get the shot.
This means that the travel and tourism industry needs to make sure that they develop scanning technique or some way of identifying if someone has a superbug and then have adequate quarantine places in place in order to prevent the superbugs from spreading from other countries. They would need these provisions to be in place at all ports and airports and
Although the increased movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have negative impacts on public health by providing a sort of highway for the spread of infectious disease, in contrast, it can also have a great positive impact. This movement can also include the increased ease of movement of people like doctors and engineers that can help to improve an otherwise cut-off region, the availability of fresh foods to areas that wouldn't normally have access during certain times of the year, and the increased east of movement of manufactures goods such as medicines. For this reason, the reduction of flow would most certainly have a much more negative affect on public health at this point in time. Instead, other options to control the negative affects must be explored. One such option would be the increased implementation of a better inspection and sterilization process for imported and even exported goods. In conjunction, a better global education system could be developed
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) note that when children participate in the recommended level of physical activity of at least 60 minutes per day multiple health benefits ensue. Nevertheless, since the creation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) increasing focus has been dedicated to bridging the achievement gap among students and less emphasis has been placed on non-academic curriculum such as physical education. Research has shown that approximately 3.8% of elementary schools provide formal physical education with this percentage steadily declining as children continue onto middle and high school. This decrease in physical activity is in line with reports from the CDC which estimate that one third of children in the United States are overweight and, within those cases, the CDC has documented that children who are overweight have higher absentee rates, have poorer health and experience early signs of mental illness all of which have an impact on academic performance.
The conquest of the New World was impacted by infectious diseases, which caused the population of Native Americans to decrease. These diseases were the number one cause of death of Native Americans. If one were to survive a disease, they would not be infected again because it meant they developed an immunity to it. Most diseases are caused by microparasites. There are two stages that occur until an infection leads to a disease. In the incubation stage symptoms aren’t always noticeable, however, a person can still infect others. The disease is more likely to spread in this stage. The latent stage is the time between the infection and the stage of the infectiousness. There were many diseases that infected the Indians during this time. The main diseases were
The spread of disease through our continual travel is at all time highs and is doing great damage to the citizens of the world. Some have even suggested taking extreme measures just insure that the spread of certain disease don’t continue to infect others. Certain bans or advisories on travel to certain areas have been established before to decrease further infection. If i were to have a plan to to prevent this type of problem i would go about it in a view different ways. One I would have the whole agree on
Unfortunately, for individuals in the developing world resources are lacking. It is individuals in these situations that are extremely vulnerable to potential exposure. Climate change is also impacting disease transmission. Large environmental areas are shrinking due to urban sprawl which is leading to increased populations density’s, increased pathogen load, decreased distributions, and a greater prevalence of disease (Mills, Gage, Khan, 2010). Thus, larger numbers of individuals are living in close proximity of disease vectors.
The world is not a large and strange place anymore. The world is a place that is interconnected and intertwined. The world has become from a place that each country and their peoples are separate and isolated to a place that each country and their peoples are part of a global network. Thanks to globalization this is occurring. Globalization is the ‘international integration” or ‘de-bordering’ – “a number of highly disparate observations whose regular common denominator is the determination of a profound transformation of the traditional nation-state” (Von Bogdandy 2). Globalization is connecting different people from different cultures and backgrounds together. More and more corporations are entering new foreign markets to sell their
Global authorities should not just focus their efforts on only one certain country, in fact it would be smart to branch out and help another country when in need. For instance, it would may be completely justified for the CDC to go into a third-world country and provide them with the resources they need in order to save lives and even stop the transmission of the infection. The collection of biological specimens is completely ethically vindicated under certain regulations. FirstlyHowever, the collection of the specimens should be strictly regulated by government agencies. Strict regulation would prevent the possibility of bioterrorism. Secondly, governments should only provide the specimens to qualified researchers with their only purpose to study the effects of the disease, thus learning how to prevent future outbreaks. The obligation of front line healthcare workers can be a touchy subject. Generally speaking, healthcare workers know that they are risking a lot by treating sick individuals, it is their job. If healthcare workers practice safe methods to help stop the transmission between the sick to and the workers, then they can focus on trying to save afflicte’s patient’s lifeves. All things considered, when dealing with the dilemma of what should be our responsibility and in respondingse to emerging disease
Globalization aided in impacting human health by population mobility. The source of epidemics throughout history can be traced back to human migration (Saker). The effects of these epidemics have changed whole societies. International efforts to prevent the spreading of infections from one country to another have been focused on. Early diseases that spread between Asia and Europe included the bubonic plague, influenzas of various types, and other similar contagious diseases. The world is more interdependent and connected than ever in the era of globalization. This is because inexpensive and efficient transportation allows access to almost everywhere and the increase of global trade of agricultural products brought an increasing number of people into contact with animal disease. Trade routes had long been established between Europe and Asia along which diseases were unintentionally transmitted. The management of malaria is a global role (Carter). Global institutions support the
Globalization has brought the world as a whole much closer together, because of the impacts of globalization, immigration has also become more common. With a greater understanding of global ideals and cultural philosophies, people have become more comfortable moving to a new country and beginning a new life. Within 30 years of the passing of the
"The failure to engage in the fight to anticipate, prevent, and ameliorate global health problems would diminish America's stature in the realm of health and jeopardize our own health, economy, and national security, " stated by The Institute of Medicine. Global health refers to health phenomenon that transcends across national borders. For instance, global health would address predicaments such as: infectious and insect-borne diseases that can spread from one country to another. Thus, global health should be addressed by collaborative actions and solutions. On the other hand, countries tend to focus on other essential issues that are occurring in the present day and therefore, overlook the global health issue. Some issues that countries
The practice of world trade amongst countries has taken over the rate of domestic production. It has led to the free flowing of money across national borders, which opens doors for companies and investors to seek for best rates for financing anywhere across the globe. Such trend is known as globalization and Cullen & Parboteeah (2008) defines globalisation as the worldwide trend of borderless and interlinked world economies, and companies no longer restrain by domestic boundaries and possibly conduct any business activities throughout the globe.
Infections disease prevention and control and communicable and infectious disease risks are important topics that every student nurse should be exposed to during the nursing program. The impact and threats that these infectious diseases cause an effect on society and global level should be studied. Also, the economic principles to nursing and health care that public health contributes to.
People around the world are more connected to each other than ever before. Information and money flow quicker than ever. Products produced in one part of a country are available to the rest of the world. It is much easier for people to travel, communicate and do business internationally. This whole phenomenon has been called globalization. Spurred on in the past by merchants, explorers, colonialists and internationalists, globalization has in more recent times been increasing rapidly due to improvements in communications, information and transport technology. It has also been encouraged by trade liberalization and financial market deregulation.
