"His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces. 'It's war paint,' Rowdy always says. 'It just makes me look tougher.” (17) Junior easily loves Rowdy the most out of all of his friends. Even after all of the times that he was mean to Junior and when he has his outburst, Junior knows that Rowdy needs friends and that it’s all just temporary. Junior also knows Rowdy’s secrets and has never given them away. This is the sign of a true friendship. Rowdy also has never given away any of Junior’s secrets which shows that even though he’s been mean, he still wants to be friends. Junior also loves his other friends because of how much they support him too, especially Penelope and Gordy. The third most important way that Junior made it through his year at Wellpinit was because of his need and want to fit in and prove he’s just as good as everyone else. Anyone who’s switched schools at any point in their life knows the feeling of having no friends and being uncomfortable all the time. "'Okay Arnold,' Dodge said. 'Where did you learn this fact? On the reservation? Yes, we all know there is so much amazing science on the reservation.'"(85) After Mr. Dodge says this, Junior’s reaction shows how much he cares about his hometown and how much he wishes people would treat him fairly. This also shows how much people dislike him and don’t understand him. Junior

He shows his courage, brains, and emotions in different ways throughout the entire book. He shows his courage when he beats Rowdy in basketball, his brains when he stood up to his teacher and corrected him, and his emotions when mourning for himself, his tribe, and everyone they had lost. Roger even gave Junior a ride home after a basketball game. Arnold also becomes a friend of a geek, Gordy. They were both "outcasts", and they understood how it felt to not fit in. After making all these friends, he feels that he is starting to fit in with the white people.
The upshot of all this is that, Junior’s decision about leaving the Rez and moving to Reardan for a better education was tough. He faced lot of problems; he felt lonely because of losing his best friend, and afraid of death of his tribe and family. Although he suffered from the entire bad things that happened to him, it was the best decision that he had made for his life. “I realized that I might be a lonely Indian boy, but I

Junior gets beat up a lot. His first fist fight was when he was 3 and he only won 5 and lost 102 in his whole life as it says on page 62. Junior was used to it, he didn’t enjoy it but he was used to it. On Junior’s first day of highschool, he got suspended for throwing a textbook at his teacher, Mr. P. A few days later he got a visit from Mr. P along with a very long talk. After the talk, Junior decided to switch schools from Mr. P’s request. Not because Mr. P didn’t like him anymore, it was for his own good. He wanted to switch to Reardan highschool,, where all the rich white kids go. Well he had to break the news to his best friend Rowdy and his parents but his parents accepted his choice. Rowdy wasn’t happy with Junior’s decision. Junior insisted for Browdy to come but he refused. Browdy was devastated but Junior made the switch without Browdy anyways. His first day at Reardan, he punched a guy named Rogers in the face, he made his nose bleed like
