I am LaToyia Watts Jackson and I teach Language Arts at Westover High School. I am one of twelve academic teachers in the Ninth Grade Academy. The ninth grade students are isolated from the upperclassmen. Westover High School is one of four high schools in Dougherty County, Albany, Georgia. We serve a total of 1,379 students: 456 freshmen, 316 sophomores, 301 juniors, and 306 seniors. Of these students, 46% are economically disadvantaged and 8% have a disability. The graduation rate is 70.7%. Finally, Westover High School only met seven of the nine indicators, which resulted in not making adequate yearly progress (AYP). However, this school is not on the Needs Improvement list. Therefore, 113 students transferred to this school for the 2008-2009 school term; because it is the “School of Choice.”
Dougherty County School System requires students to read twenty-five books per year (this includes short stories, articles, novels, and other works of literature). However, many novels are complex and are difficult for special needs students to read. There is a lack of resources to assist special need students in a literature classroom. Such resources include but are not limited to: audio books, books in Braille, large-print books, technology, and other supplementary materials to meet the various needs of special needs students. These materials will improve the success of these students. However, without adequate training of regular education teachers and special needs teacher, the
The English language is particularly complex in almost all aspects. Many of the words in the English language have different meanings for the same word. This is not unlike the definition of the different levels of usage. McCrimmon defines the three levels, formal, moderate, and colloquial, by their sentence structure, diction, and tone (McCrimmon 193). ¹ Using McCrimmon’s definitions, authors can determine what type of writing is applicable to each of the three levels. For the formal writings, an adequate example of where readers can find it is in a professional journal, and an appropriate place to find an example of the moderate level is in a weekly news magazine. Also, the best place to look for an example of the colloquial level is in certain sections of the newspaper. All of the levels of usage apply to these different types of writings and assist in defining what each level involves.
Passions drive people, and the townspeople in “The Lottery” and Paul in “The Rocking-Horse Winner” are no different. Each of the members of the unnamed town has a strong passion for tradition. The original black box used for the lottery is described as being, “lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born” (Jackson 251). This sentence gives the reader an understanding that the lottery is an ancient tradition that has become an integral part of the town’s lifestyle. Such a tradition can only be carried on for this length of time if the people are passionate about preserving the tradition. Paul had a passion to be wealthy as a way to prove to his mother that he was lucky. From a young age, he saw that his family always wanted more money to support a better lifestyle, yet

The novel Mark Haddon has written contains a lot of meaningful ideas and has successfully written it in a way that is skilful and provides a variety of appropriate language and distinctive qualities that include diagrams, structure of the novel and narration. In doing that, it allows the audience to provoke thought and challenges them with profound views about the deep and meaningful ideas that are within the novel. The audience is introduced to different concepts such as Christopher’s struggles with the acceptance of truth, values of family relationships, growing up, and social interaction which are all evident in the novel and shown through Haddon’s use of different language and conventions.

Can contemporary discourse presume a community of interest? In order to answer this question, one is forced to first answer the question, can language be used to reveal anything new? If the answer is yes, then how can it do this and how can we employ it to do this for us. Also, one is forced to ask what is it exactly that we are looking for? Once we’ve found it, how can we use it to improve our present condition? Plato and Descartes both believe that language can indeed improve our conditions through it’s revelation, and both give methods to attain new knowledge. Although vastly differing, in that Descartes builds knowledge from the ground up, while Plato works from a distorted view, and seeks to clarify it, their

Nearly all knowledge of the English language before the seventh century is hypothetical. Most of this knowledge is based on later English documents and earlier documents in related languages (3). The English language of today represents many centuries of development. As a continuous process, the development of the English language began in England around the year 449 with the arrival of several Germanic tribes including: the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes (1, p.49). English, like all other languages, is subject to constant growth and decay (1). Many of the political and social events that have so profoundly affected the English people in their life have generally had an impact on their language (1). The

Over one-thousand, five-hundred million people speak English worldwide. It is used in commerce, legislation, and as the basis for communication between countries. Many adolescents learn how to speak English in their early childhood, and many universities worldwide mainly teach in English. Historically, the most widely spoken language has originated from a very powerful nation. Thus, the influence of English-speaking countries is exceptionally great, incentivizing the widespread use of the language. Although English may be deemed the “international language”, it is one of the most difficult dialects and a simpler language may better serve the propose of a universal vernacular.
