Interpersonal Relationship and Gatsby

     Throughout his love for Daisy, he tried different ways to get her to love him. Gatsby lied by acting like someone he is not. Gatsby love to her was through other people. All the friends he made, turned out not to be his friends. The loneliness that he experienced caused him to find a way for his friends and Daisy to love him. He never won the love of Daisy or his friends. The lies and games, he played cost the loss of his life.

He cares about her so much, yet Tom has been cheating on Daisy since the beginning of their relationship. It is made clear that Tom does not value her at all, so Gatsby does not deserve the pain he receives when Daisy chooses to stay with Tom over him, because of how much he loves Daisy.

Gatsby meets Daisy when he was a young military officer. He is just a poor guy. Daisy, also a brilliant and pretty girl just as a fairy, has the most romantic days with Gatsby. Obviously, Daisy impressed herself into Gatsby’s heart during that time. It seems that they deeply love each other, but actually, she is in love less with Gatsby the man, than with the Gatsby’s successful image. To some extent, she falls in love with the wealth of Gatsby. Clearly remember that Gatsby makes the famous remark to Nick before they moved to the New York,” her voice is full of money”.

When Gatsby first met Daisy, he was merely a poor boy with dreams much bigger than his wallet. Daisy was everything he could have possibly dreamed of: rich, beautiful and powerful. As his love for her grew, so did his ambition to give her whatever he could. When Gatsby acquired a lot of money by a chance encounter with a sailor, his first thought was of his heart. He had left it with Daisy. But, as seen in the book, love that is given yet not returned is poisonous. Daisy’s unfaithful actions led up to many tragic events in the story. She kissed Gatsby while married to Tom still. On page 122 it says “As he left the room again she got up and went over to Gatsby, and pulled his face down kissing him on the mouth.” This shows how unfaithful she actually is and how strongly she led Gatsby on by doing this. If she just told Gatsby she doesn’t want to be unfaithful to Tom and to leave her alone, maybe Gatsby would of stopped trying to get to her. Instead of being a good wife to Tom she flirted back with Gatsby. She also says “I love you now, isn’t that enough? I can’t help what’s past” on page 140. She claims she loves both Tom Gatsby. She has always been unfaithful because she went on many dates while Gatsby was in war. On page 158 it says “Through this twilight universe Daisy began to move again with the season; suddenly she was again keeping half a dozen dates with half a dozen men.”

Gatsby does not quite grasp the true concept of love. As Daisy and Gatsby first met and fell in love five years prior, they do not know one another. They know who each other used to be, but that is simply a depiction of the past. Fitzgerald depicts this obsession with money and luxury through complicated relationships full of trouble, infidelity and sorrow. The relationships Fitzgerald portrays all symbolize the materialism and hedonism of the age; each relationship is doomed to a certain extent based on the social class of each character.

Friendship, the most concrete connection that two people can have. Friendship is described as the strongest form of interpersonal bond between two individuals. I believe that friendship is about being there for him or her, trusting that person, and when something dramatic happens, that person is there for you. Nick and Gatsby's friendship though questionable in the beginning ends in something real and meaningful. In the book you are not exactly introduced to the main character. We are told of what seem to be tall tales, and fictional stories of Jay Gatsby’s money and parties. Also different theories on how Gatsby makes a living. After reading for a bit you find out that Jay Gatsby is this soft hearted, lover boy that fell in love with Daisy years ago. While he was at war they would exchange letters every time they got a chance. Though he did fall in love, it was all in the past. All through the book, Gatsby's mind is stuck on getting Daisy back. He thinks that in one magical moment, Daisy will leave Tom and return to his bed for a fairy tale ending. After he comes back from the war his thoughts are on his love's betrayal, her marriage. He sees his actions as a method of love, but his thoughts are ill hearted towards others. He has been involved in illegal financial methods and is trying to break up a marriage for his own gain in life. After their fling officially begins, Gatsby has Daisy lying to Tom and he is convincing her that she never loved her husband. Gatsby thinks that by getting Daisy to realize her marital mistakes, she will simply leave Tom and marry him.  He is corrupting a relationship and an individual further than their present state of dishonesty. He thinks that his plans are going accordingly until a heated discussion breaks out and he is on the losing end.
