As an individual who’s been drawing and painting since before she could even hold a pen – apparently, I used to spill my grandma’s tea and make shapes with it – art has always been my favorite pastime. It’s tranquil and relaxing, and mixing paints is the most satisfying experience. Thus, it’s no wonder that the activity that I’m most invested in is art.

My literacy path has a lot of exciting events that happened during my childhood. At that time I was inspired by my mother who was my literary guardian, and encourage me at that path. She was the closest person to me at that time. She has been teaching fine art for more than thirty years at one of reputable schools back home. She didn’t settle for that job only. She was cooperating with many other artist running exhibitions that won awards. Five years ago, my mother was promoted to be a supervisor at the ministry of education of all the art instructors over the region. As child whose literary guardian is an artist, I spent most of my time trying to imitate my mother’s painting.

Many people argue that leaders are necessary to maintain a civilized society. Others argue that leaders tend to be corrupt and abuse their power. Numerous times throughout history, subjects have followed their leaders blindly versus deciding for themselves. Keeping those valid points in mind, what makes a successful leader? Many qualities come to mind; however, mostly everyone can agree on one; a great leader has a desire to change the world and the people inhabiting it.

After my first few drawings, I still felt awful. Almost five years of not drawing had left me very rusty. I looked at all of them with disdain; the messy lines and clashing art styles made me think that my mom was right to steer me away from art. My first few drawings were quickly thrown away and my sculptures were tucked away in shame, but something about picking up that pencil and clay felt so natural that I couldn’t help but do it again. Beginning in eighth grade, I developed a strong desire to use art as a means of expressing ideas from my imagination. I attended summer art camps for 5 years during middle and high school, and I drew characters constantly in an attempt to figure out the human form, but it wasn’t until my first high school art class in tenth grade that I really progressed in technical skill.

My Aunt Dawn pushes me to work hard for what I want to achieve. My Aunt told me if I work hard I could make to the State Horse Show. This year is my second year riding without Aunt Dawn leading. She told me if you work hard, have dedication, you will succeed. She was always a good teacher

Someone who is very influential to me is my film and television broadcast teacher Mrs. Katrina Allemeier. She was the main person who helped me figure out how much I love making films. I had randomly been placed into her beginning video production class, my sophomore year of high school, when the other elective classes for first semester had been filled up. She introduced me to the process of film making and how to communicate ideas through those films. She encouraged me to begin advanced video production second semester, which I later did and loved greatly. Junior year I joined the IB Film class, but was also accepted into the Television Broadcast Class, which created the school’s news show every week. I didn’t believe that I would do well in this class, because I did not see myself as a leader. Mrs. Allemeier helped me grow as a leader greatly in this class, by making me push myself to advance in my position in the class. Throughout my life there have been many leaders, some beneficial and some deficient, from which I have drawn lessons in my overall leadership development. Leadership values have been gleaned with respect to professional aspects and general life teachings. As I was contemplating leaders, one person came to mind as having the most substantial impact upon my life. Through his guidance helped to transform me into the man that I am, and will continue to impact the person that I aspire to become in the future. The most influential role model in my personal development is my father, Freddrick Lee Long. His disposition and peaceful realization of his life personally projects an aura of contentment and true exhilaration. Throughout his life, he consistently displayed these attributes in his methods of professional and personal leadership in the simplest ways. Over the course of my life, he has been a profound influence upon the molding of my leadership style and attributes.

For some, this fleeting moment can be elongated. This state of inspiration can be maintained long enough to produce something which may communicate the universal truth which lead to such inspiration. This ability to suspend one’s self in a state of inspiration long enough to produce a means to communicate that inspiration is referred to by some as “artistic genius.”(class notes) Not many people have this ability, but those who do have the power to utilize their inspiration to inspire us in turn with their work.

With the utilization of visual and performing arts, students can begin to enhance their personal growth. By producing original works, enjoying the time spent on the piece of art, and having a sense of pride in one’s accomplishments, an art student will experience an increase in self-esteem and confidence (Importance). A child who receives praise for their art work from parents and teachers will most likely be more positive in their artistic abilities. For example, when a child brings a painting home to his parents and his parents react with smiles, cheers and display the picture on the refrigerator, the student will in turn feel very proud of his accomplishments. This newly found self-esteem and confidence often expands into other subjects at school to the overall benefit of the individual. Participating in art is also a way for students to
