There are short term effects that can happen to drug users depend on the quantity used, the purity of the substance, and whether or not it was used with other mind effecting substances. Short term effects only last for a small period of time and are not as severe as long term effects but still can impact a person's physical and emotional state. There are many different types and classifications of substances that produce a variety of short-term effects, but the most common ones include increased heart rate, high blood pressure, dizziness, tremors, and mood changes. The danger of these effects becomes higher when substances are taken in larger dosages, as well as potential heart attack, stroke, respiratory failure and coma increase. Some of the most common substances of abuse include alcohol, hallucinogens, opiates, and barbiturates each of these produce their own unique short-term effects. When someone consumes an abusive amount of alcohol it can cause the following short term effects: mood swings, memory problems, slurred speech, trouble concentrating, coordination issues, and trouble making decisions. Jyllian Kemsley Ph.D. is a chemical research scientist, and scientific research contributor to the CENtral Science’s Safety Zone blog that seeks to “cover science and technology, business and industry, government and policy, education, and employment aspects of the chemistry field”. Her article entitled “Psychedelic Compounds like Ecstasy May Be Good for More than Just a High", reports on the revolutionary research theory within the field of medicine that seeks to examine the prospective benefits of using psychoactive compounds in treating a number of mental conditions. The piece is well written, and presents a number of background studies that have evaluated the efficiency of these

In order to better understand why a therapist would recommend MDMA to a patent it is important to know exactly how this drug effects the patient. The effects of MDMA become apparent to the patent anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes after it is taken. Then the strongest part of the experience happens in under 20 minutes after the initial wave hits and last around 2.5 hours. The after effects usually last 24-48 hours with rare cases of them lasting up to a week. The most notable of the effects is an openness. This openness can further be understood by knowing that there is an immense reduction in any fear the patient is experiencing, an increase of empathy, overwhelming sense of love, and a loosening of ego. Some negative effects during the initial experience include hyperthermia, dehydration, jaw clenching,
MDMA, or methylenedioxy-methylamphetamine, is a chemical that affects the release of serotonin in the brain and is a schedule I drug in the United states. Most commonly known as a part of the ecstasy pill or molly powder capsule, this crystalline drug is used at raves, parties, and clubs worldwide for a heightened sense of euphoria and a myriad of psychedelic effects. This substance is known as the love drug for it's ability to bring people closer together and lower normal social anxieties with its empatheogenic effects. In the last few years, more and more studies have been done on the valid psychiatric use for counseling and couples therapy. Here are some of the things found during the most recent of these studies.

In 2011, researchers completed a pilot Phase II clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of introducing MDMA, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a psychedelic compound most widely known as the main ingredient in the recreational drug Ecstacy. It is recognized for producing feelings of “euphoria, empathy,
Serotonin plays a direct role in regulating mood, aggression, sexual activity, and sensitivity to pain"(Franci Crepe au-Hobson(2013). This is one of the major reasons why people consume this drug at clubs, because it alters their mood and sexual activity, that is why people under the influence of Ecstasy tends to be touching other people or things close to their surroundings. Ecstasy has both short term and long term effects; examples of short term effects would be increased feeling of closeness, malignant hyperthermia, increase heart rate and blood pressure, and decrease of appetite; the long term effects are panic disorder, addiction, flashbacks, brain damage, and depressive disorder. Methamphetamine is an addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It takes the form of a white or blue crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water and alcohol. Methamphetamine was manufactured from amphetamine in early in the 20th century. Methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II stimulant, which makes it legally available only through a nonrefillable prescription.
According to the American Psychiatric Association chronic drug abuse may occur together with any mental illness that may include some of the following disorders. “Some common serious mental disorders associated with chronic drug abuse include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, manic depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and antisocial personality disorder” (Center, 2004). Some of these disorders carry with them an increased risk of drug abuse. Another example of a drug that can cause a mental disorder, is MDMA (3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) which is commonly known as ecstasy. It produces long term deficits in serotonin function in the brain, leading to mental disorders such as depression and anxiety.
