Good companies will try to structure the work so as to match the nature of the work with the nature of the employee this helps make the work as interesting and enjoyable as possible for the individuals involved. Motivation is to achieve a desired outcome such as completing a task or project quickly and to a high standard for reward and recognition through enthusiasm. What motivates employees at work? According to Herzberg et al, 1957 - the happiness of staff at work depends on the existing working conditions, the status of the job and the pay and benefits package. While these so called hygiene factors keep workers satisfied initially, only if the work is challenging, efforts are rewarded and responsibility is given does it lead to long term motivation. For this to work, the company needs to create policies and practises that encourage motivation and performance.
Over the last two hundred years, management has changed and along with it have the motivators within the workplace. It is vital that managers are able to motivate employees to perform at maximum productivity and due to the importance of motivation, several theories have been developed to ensure this. While some theories have been around longer than others, the information found within them can still help managers motivate staff today with some being more effective than others.

The meaning of motivation has been defined as follows: the psychological process that gives behavior purpose and direction (Kreitner, 1995); the internal drive to satisfy an unsatisfied need (Higgins, 1994); the will to achieve (Bedeian, 1993); and an inclination to act in a purposive manner to achieve specific needs (Buford, Bedeian, & Linder, 1995). What motivates people can vary from person to person. For example, one person may be motivated by monetary rewards or extrinsic factors, while others are motivated by recognition and achievement or intrinsic factors (Linder, 1998). Motivation plays a vital role in an agency’s management. The key factor is to identify the method of each employee’s motivation and work on that to increase job satisfaction and decrease job burnout. A successful leader will need to understand different motivational theories and must be able to determine which strategy or combination of strategies works best to motivate each member of their team.

Also showing how motivation can increase performance as well as overall productivity of employees. These things will be key in management and the way they motivate their employees.
