AI is the pinnacle of humanity’s attempts at mimicking the creation of life through “artificial” thinking. John R. Searle argues that the intentionality in human beings is a product of the brains and its mental processes. He also notes that the certain brain processes are sufficient (indicating that there is at times a bare minimum of processes) for the “intentionality.” He also states that the instantiation of a computer program can be done by a human but the program would still lack the relevant intentionality. Searle also states that, “any mechanism capable of producing intentionality must have casual powers equal to those of the brain.” One important thing to note in Searle’s arguments is that he separates AI into two distinct categories. Strong AI and weak AI. Strong AI being the advanced computers that are in fact, “minds,” and that these computers can actually understand things. Weak AI on the other hand, are the computers that act as nothing more than tools to be used to study and to serve any purpose we program it to do. Searle brings up several arguments that he refutes such as the “Systems Reply,” “The Robot reply,” “The Brain simulator reply,” “the combination reply,” “The other minds reply,” and “the many mansions reply.” The main argument that
Through this, Searle argues that if a human and machine receive the same input and then respond by the same output, how are they any different from one another? When given the same purpose, humans and machines have the same response, therefore machines may have a mind. Gilbert Ryle created The computational theory of mind that claims “Computers behave in seemingly rational ways; their inner program causes them to behave in this way and therefore mental states are just like computational states”. He continues on by saying that “If logic can be used to command, and these commands can be coded into logic, then these commands can be coded in terms of 1s and 0s, therefore giving modern computers logic. Through this, how is one to tell if robots don’t have minds if they use logic just like humans do. When the purpose of humans and machines are the same, they may process differently in order to complete that purpose, although they may have the same output. Because humans and machines receive the same input and return the same output, they both have minds in addition to functions and processes in order to do that.
Human beings not only have the ability to think but also have imitation that can help them to think comprehensively. Other species may have the ability to think but they do not have the ability to think about things in different ways. Blackmore mentions “we use the word learning for simple association or classical conditioning (which almost all animals can do), for learning by trial and error or operant conditioning (which many animals can do) and for learning by imitation (which almost none can do). ”(34). The imitation is the ability for people to think in different and more comprehensive ways. When people think, they can not only think in their own way but also think by other’s ways. This ability makes human beings unique because if they can think in different ways they can get more information, which can help them make the decision. Human beings’ thinking also has the peculiarity, which is hard be imitated. Blackmore points out “Computers may not play chess in the same way as humans, but their success show how wrong we can be about intelligence”(32). Human thinking is hard to copy because it is a very comprehensive process. It is hard to copy even though for the AI, which made by human beings. For years, Artificial Intelligence has posed the question, what it means to be human, and more specifically the nature of consciousness. When confronted with the issue of the relationship between the mind and the body, the most likely argument is that both exist independently of each other but have a two-way relationship. However, recent advancements in machine learning, the technical algorithms that make up artificial intelligence, have suggested that this is not true. It is important to explore whether artificial intelligent agents are really capable of having these “minds” to achieve consciousness, even when they are built of physical components, such as codes. Up to this point in evolution humans are the only ones to achieve consciousness, however recent progression in artificial intelligence provides the possibility to prove otherwise. Consciousness must be defined with the possibility of bringing forth different theories. Defining consciousness and the relationship between the mind and material body will not only teach us more about artificial intelligence, but more importantly about the human condition and implications on personhood. The purpose of this paper is to present John Searle’s Chinese room argument in which it challenges the notions of the computational paradigm, specifically the ability of intentionality. Then I will outline two of the commentaries following, the first by Bruce Bridgeman, which is in opposition to Searle and uses the super robot to exemplify his point. Then I will discuss John Eccles’ response, which entails a general agreement with Searle with a few objections to definitions and comparisons. My own argument will take a minimalist computational approach delineating understanding and its importance to the concepts of the computational paradigm.

In Reason and Responsibility, John Searle presents his Chinese room argument to refute Strong AI, or artificial intelligence. Strong AI is an idea that a computer is as genuine and accurate by virtue of those who programmed it, not a simple tool. Essentially, a system that has a mental state, M, and follows a set of programmed rules as if it behaves as M. Searle wishes to prove that a mechanical application of communication rules to a system does not give the machine the ability to understand the language, hence, can’t think for itself. In Minds, Brains, and Programs John Searle objects to Computational Theory of Mind (CTM), particularly that running a program on a computer and manipulating symbols does not mean that the computer has understanding, or more generally a mind. In this paper I will first explain Searle’s Chinese Room, then I will explain CTM and how it relates to the Chinese Room. Following this I will describe how the Chinese Room attacks the CTM. Next I will explain the Systems Reply to the Chinese Room and how the Systems Reply actually undermines Searle’s conclusion in the Chinese Room. Then I will describe Searle’s response to the Systems Reply and how that response undermines the Systems Reply. Lastly, I will evaluate Searle’s reply to the Systems Reply and defend the Systems Reply against the points Searle raises against the Systems Reply.

In his paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” Alan Turing sets out to answer the question of whether machines can think in the same humans can by conceptualizing the question in concrete terms. In simple terms, Turing redefines the question by posing whether a machine can replicate the cognition of a human being. Yet, some may object to the notion that Turing’s new question effectively captures the nature of machines’ capacity for thought or consciousness, such as John Searle. In his Chinese room thought experiment, Searle outlines a scenario that implies machines’ apparent replication of human cognition does not yield conscious understanding. While Searle’s Chinese thought experiment demonstrates how a Turing test is not sufficient to establish that a machine can possess consciousness or thought, this argument does not prove that machines are absolutely incapable of consciousness or thought. Rather, given the ongoing uncertainty of the debate regarding the intelligence of machines, there can be no means to confirm or disconfirm the conscious experience of machines as well as the consciousness of humans by extension of that principle.
