How to be a Nerd - Original Writing Constant worry and stress. Busy twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. From keeping good grades in four AP classes to having no social life outside of soccer and chess and school and work, my work seems to never end. Being a nerd like me takes a lot of hard work and determination to complete all tasks represented every day. Being me is a special art that only a special few can achieve or attempt to imitate. The first thing to know about being me is setting your priorities straight. You must have no life and study for five hours everyday for the four AP classes that you have and make sure you are able to finish it all before two in the morning the next …show more content…
Day to day people see me act and behave differently than other people. If you really want to be me, you will need to master a few key elements. First, you must carry a really big backpack, the larger the better. You want a bag that may weigh between ten and one hundred pounds, the weight is crucial. With such a large backpack, you are able to carry all your books, folders, and binders without every having to stop at your locker. Also, if you are in a hurry, you can turn sharp corners with your backpack and knock over those in your way that might be a little more height deficient then you like Audrey, Pauline, and Chelsea for example, no offense to any of them of course. Not only do you need the backpack, you will need to be able to talk like me and know what to say at different times. From talking out of turn and answering your own questions, to going on about some random topic just to prove your right to find out when you finish no one has listened to a single word I have said, not to name any teachers or people of course. Some people all ready have the speaking out of turn done, but I have yet to find anyone to perfect my voice and speak as I do (all though I must say Ken Minster, Sean Hopkins, Joseph Carlston, and Alan Fonseca have all gotten pretty close after trying to imitate it for the last month or two.) I seem to almost never go anywhere with this guys when all of
In order to increase productivity and learning time in school, administrators should allow students to carry backpacks to their classes. As a result of bringing backpacks to class, students will come to class prepared and organized, with no reason to return to their locker. Often times students forget their supplies and must utilize class time to retrieve the forgotten materials. With backpacks, students will already have their materials with them, eliminating the need to waste class time. Another advantage of allowing backpacks in class is that it will give students plenty of time to use the restroom between classes as opposed to during lecture time. High schools are notoriously larger than middle and elementary schools, therefore the five-minutes
Over the summer, I read a book titled, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Convey. The seven habits described in this book were being proactive, Beginning with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize, and sharpen the saw. The first habit Being proactive means not to make choices on impulse. it means to evaluate the situation before making a desicion. for example, two years ago when i had friends that talked behind my back i just moved on and found better friends rather than be mean to them or excluding them out of my way. The second habit Beginning with the end in mind means to think ahead at what your goals are and start working towards them. My goal for the eight grade year was to recieve a 95% or higher score in all of my classes. in order to realize this goal i worked hard through the year on assignments and and sometimes did more than what was expected of me during projects. in the end, though,
Sometimes you will have a class outside and can’t get to and from that class in time. If you have a locker that is
In the story “I Just Wanna Be Average” the author Mike Rose argues that society very often neglects and doesn’t see the full value and potential of students.
As a student, I am often troubled by the rigid routines of the school day, despite the fact that I am actually a very habitual person. The constant ringing of bells, lectures, bellwork, classwork, homework, each a daily practice throughout the school year. Although all of these components promote conformity, which will ultimately support the balance of school and societal norms, they also tend to threaten each student’s own unique characteristics. This then poses the question; to what degree should schools encourage conformity versus individuality? Certainly, a level of conformity is required to achieve a balanced society however, the overall structure of the school day and class, including the methods used to teach and mandatory classes,
I would like to be a member of the yearbook staff because it includes many things that I find interesting. I enjoy working with a team to accomplish something, working on a project that will have a finished product, and I love photography, writing, drawing out plans, and anything that includes having fun. I think I could contribute a lot to the yearbook with my skills of leadership, creativity, and determination.
The transition from middle school to high school can be very large. Not only are you in an entirely new situation from a social perspective, you are also in an entirely new academic situation. As a freshman at a Catholic high school, your teachers are going to expect that you produce your best work at all times. You will be held to very high academic standards, and more work is going to be expected of you than it was in middle school. Here are a few study tips to help you make it through your first few months of high school.
Would you rather be a bigger nerd or a better athlete? I bet the majority of you said athlete because that is what American culture is rooted in. However, in his article “America Needs Its Nerds” (1990) Leonid Fridman proposes that “For America’s sake the anti-intellectual values that pervade our society must be fought.” By first spelling out how the meaning of the terms geek and nerd are derogatory, and secondly, explaining how at prestigious colleges “nerds are ostracized while athletes are idolized” and third, describing how other countries treat the intellectually serious– hold them and teachers above athletes– Fridman accomplishes his task. Through his utilization definition, rhetorical question, and contrast, Fridman seeks to
For my nonconformity/compliance assignment I chose to violate a social norm. I felt that doing it only once would not suffice, so I tried it a few times to see if the results varied from person to person. I went ahead and started with refusing a handshake. The first instance was a friend introducing me to a friend of theirs. He reached his hand out and I just looked at it and shook my head. I must admit it was hard to keep a straight face, but I managed. Concerning my personal feelings, I was surprised at how uncomfortable I was, considering that I was aware that it was an experiment. Despite this knowledge, I still felt a mild rush of embarrassment. His reaction was what I had
Yes. At my high school, I’ve participated in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) course as well as been a part of the CyberPatriot and Academic Bowl teams offered by the organization. Unfortunately, I could only spend two years of my high school career in that organization due to the lack of schedule space. I’ve also been a part of the International and National Honor Society clubs. The International Club was a club of students that helped to promote and express the different cultures at my school. As for the National Honor Society, we’ve helped the community by completing service projects, such as the Ronald McDonald House t-shirt sale and the Relay for Life event. In terms of school teams, I was a member of the Scholastic Competition
Imagine waking up to your blaring alarm clock and getting up to brush your teeth and eat breakfast. As you get dressed you realize something- it’s Monday morning and you simply cannot go to school because you are too afraid. 120,000 kids across the country feel this way every morning. They are afraid to go to school because they may possibly lose their life to an irresponsible child or teen with a gun. Locker searches can help these thousands of children and teens to feel safe. Clearly, the safety and well being of students in America should be the number one priority when considering policies for locker searches.
The novel Sula, is a work which contrasts the lives of its two main characters Nel and Sula. They appear, on the surface, to be the epidemy of binary opposites but this is in actuality their underlying bond. The differences in their personalities complement one another in a way that forges an almost unbreakable alliance. Sula is compulsive and uncontrollable while her counterpart, Nel, is sensible and principled. To prove Nel human by subscribing to the theory that a human is one who possess both good and bad traits, one must only look at how she interacts with Sula, here both negative and positive traits are evident.Nel’s "good" traits obviously come to the forefront when looking at her character. One might say this is a result
In the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey brings 7 key things teens need to live a productive, open, and successful life to the table. Covey took 7 concepts teens are hesitant to tap into and made them easy to understand and adapt to. He manages to capture his audiences attention by sharing stories of other teens that we could easily relate to. Although each aspect of the habits were relatable to each aspect of my life, I was most engaged with habits 2:Begin with the end in mind, 3:Put First Things First, and Habit 4:Think Win-Win.
People who are nostalgic about childhood, were obviously never children. Few people can remember the truth about adolescence. Their minds "censor" their memories; and have them believe that being a teenager was was one big party, free of cares and responsibilities. Well let me say this, you couldnOt be more wrong if you had a lobotomy. There aren't that many adults around who realise what adolescence was really like. The anguish, the fear, the anxiety, the stress. People don't remember those problems because they want to forget them.
The Self Every situation that an individual is exposed to throughout life, helps mold our “self.” As humans we have the ability to see ourselves from the outside, and all through life we try to see what others see and our “self” revolves around the generalized other. We observe how others perceive us and we make conclusions depending on our observations. How we act around others depends on the image we feel they have towards us.
