How Is Colonial Government Similar To Today

While the colonists modeled the structure of their legislation after the British House of Commons, salutary neglect also provided colonists the opportunity to develop their own local assemblies from individuals within their respective communities. The main reasons of conflict between the two was taxation and rules or regulations. While the colonial assemblies could pass their own laws, they needed to be approved by the governor and the King. An example of a similarity is how parliament and the legislature are close to the same thing. They both are bicameral legislatures. Parliament is like our congress, they are both made up of two parts. Britain's parliament is made up of their lower house and upper house. We are made up of the House of Representatives, which is similar to their lower house and the Senate which is like their upper house. Town meetings in the colonies still take place today. We gather as a community to talk about local issues. An example is a school board meeting about missed school days. Anyone can voice their opinions like they did back in the colonial government. Things don’t change magically, people have to fight for what they believe. People often protested back in colonial times. John Peter Zenger, who I previously mentioned, protested and contributed to freedoms that we take for granted today such as freedom of speech and press. Another way in which people protested was in the Glorious Revolution. This is when the policies of King James II became unpopular, he was removed along with Edmund Andros. We have the first amendment which allows us to protest peacefully. Inside the colonial government is the house of Burgesses, which I included above, this is both a similarity and a difference. In this house, the people got to vote for who they wanted to represent them. We also get to vote for who we want to today. Our President’s Cabinet is like the Council of State in the colonial government. In the Council of state, they looked over and advised the governor. The United States government was crafted during the Colonial period, and to this day is still in use. Although today’s society differs immensely from the Colonial period we still have a lot of similarities. We share the same values, practice the same government, and have the system of checks and balances.
