Health Grades presented a report evaluating hospital performances and patient outcomes to prepare patients to make informed decisions regarding their health care. The report is another initiative for providing high quality health care with positive patient outcomes and decreased cost (Health Grades, 2013).
The first major issue addressed is the need to improve the quality of health care to reduce the rates of morbidity and mortality. Improving the quality of care is described as a collaborative effort between hospitals, health care providers and patients (Health Grades, 2013). As reported by Health Grades hospitals must improve their level of care, health care providers must work collaboratively to provide the best patient outcomes and the patients are being encouraged to research from whom and where they seek their care (Health Grade, 2013). The initiatives through health care

The advanced practice nurse (APN) will be impacted greatly by these health care initiatives. The nurse practitioner’s quality of care will be measured directly graded by Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement based on their patient outcomes (Haycock, Edwards & Stanley, 2016). Other efforts for ensuring high quality care requires the APN to meet strict criteria with their education and training to become efficient primary providers. It is also imperative their training include the ability to work collaboratively with other health care providers and to be knowledgeable in health care policies (Hain & Fleck, 2014). Working as an APRN allows for interprofessional team care with physicians working collaboratively to identify areas of improvement for patient outcomes (Hain & Fleck, 2014). Furthermore, the APN offers the
The American people deserve quality, effective healthcare. Unfortunately, those who can afford healthcare have been paying more and more every year. The Center for Medicare Services (CMS) has developed a plan to incentivize change in the healthcare delivery system. Triple Aim focuses on simultaneously improving the patient experience, improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of health care (Berwick, Nolan, & Whittington, 2008). Triple Aim affects all areas of the healthcare delivery system; this paper will focus on how hospitals are improving care, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and reducing costs.
In the article written by Ford, (2009), the doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) has an important role to play in the current health care system which is constantly changing. As healthcare around the world is transforming, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2011 report mentioned that in the United States, Advanced practice nurses play a vital role in the rapid complex changes based on the full extent of their education and training. This article describes some of the positive role of the advance practice Nurse as a facilitator in the regulatory and policy developments. The Advance practice nurse participates and provide cost-effective care models that will improve the access and quality of care of the population. Another positive area for the APN in this current healthcare system is health promotion, health maintenance, and prevention. In this evolving health care system, it gives the Advance practice nurse the opportunity to set up acute and primary care settings that will positively impact health care delivery as they meet the needs of an expanding, aging, and chronically ill population. All over the world, the NP’s role has developed and is beneficial to health care systems and health care consumers. As Advance practice nurses we must use this great opportunity to advance our role and work with others to improve and transform health care globally. DNP graduate 's role is include leadership, research, practice, education, and
As healthcare needs are steadily on the rise, there is also an increasing demand for primary care physicians. According to the American National Association (2011), “an estimated 66 million Americans face threats to their health because of limited access to front-lines primary care.” There has been an increasing focus on utilizing the role of advanced practice providers like clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists and advance practice registered nurses to compensate for these demands. These forms of providers are master’s-prepared nurses who are have specific certifications and licensures to assess and treat patients independently or under the supervision of a physician. By utilizing these advanced practice providers, there will be an increase in
Hospitals implement HCAHPS with the support of the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA), a public or private partnership that includes key hospital and medical associations, consumer groups, measurement and accrediting bodies and government agencies that have the same interest in improving the quality of hospitals. The Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA) program that is overseen by and public and private entities, that include the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as well as the Joint Commission, is dominating this effort in the hospital district, generating reports quarterly on the delivery of effective services for mutual conditions. Even though the Hospital Quality Alliance has made this data more available to the public, there has not been enough information on the quality of hospital care from a patients ' point of view. As the Institute of Medicine shows, the foundation of patient centered care is a key factor to having a premium health care system. The HQA backs HCAHPS.
As the young and rapidly-aging population continues to increase, the demands of primary, acute and chronic disease management will also increase. As a result, more health care professionals who provide primary care will be needed to meet these demands. Thus, the emergence of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) evolve. APRN is a nurse who has completed a graduate degree and has acquired advanced knowledge and skills. APRNs are grounded with theory, concepts and principles that enable them to assess, diagnose, treat and manage their patients. APRNs can work in conjunction with other health care professionals or independently. APRNs improve access to health care by providing care in the rural and underserved areas. APRNs also reduce the cost to health care (Joel, 2013).
The last key component discussed in this paper as noted in the IOM report states “Nurses should practice at the full extent of their education and training” (Institute of Medicine 2010, pg. #). Because of the goals and recommendations with in the IOM report nurses are going to have to change the way they currently practice health care. At this time there are many different laws and regulations from state to state that are barriers for nurses. The report acknowledges the importance of removing these barriers to allow nurses to perform at their fullest educational competency. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) continue to have a very restrictive state scope of practice therefore inhibiting their ability to contribute to the health care delivery system. Whether an APRN is a Primary Care Provider (PCP), or a RN is a patient advocate and bedside care provider they are all important roles in the nursing profession in a primary care setting (Institute of Medicine 2010).
Healthcare is the single largest business around the world and plays a vital role in society today. The desire to enhance quality of care in healthcare delivery has increased tremendously.
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), whether they are nurse practitioners (NP), clinical nurse specialists (CNS), certified nurse anesthetists (CRNA), or nurse midwife (CNM), play a pivotal role in health care (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015). APNs are quite often providing primary, preventative, chronic, and routine care to patients. According to BMJ Open (Kanda et al., 2015) nurses are on the frontline and continue to be the largest profession in the world. APRNs obtain at least a Master’s degree, have an expert knowledge base, possess superlative clinical skills and demonstrate complex decision making skills often time utilizing the interdisciplinary team approach. As Indicated by the Journal of Pediatric Health Care,
As a result, healthcare is shifting from management in an acute care setting toward prevention and wellness in a community-based primary care setting (Dickerson, 2014). This has created an enormous opportunity for the expansion and emergence of new roles for Advanced Practice Nurses (APRNs) and registered nurses (RNs) alike.
Nurse practitioners are known to provide excellent quality and clinical to our patients. we listen, take time and advocate for our patients. These patients choose Advance Nurse Practitioners because of these strengths. However, health care now is more than taking care of patient with this political realm that controls what Advance Nurse Practitioners can do and how we have to do it. In this Advance Nurse Practitioners practice, the promotion to the public will be by participating and get involved in our communities. According to The American Nurses Association (ANA), Advance Nurse Practitioners play an important and crucial role in the evolution of the healthcare system in the U.S. (American Nurses Association,
Middlefield Hospital is in an urban area where patients should have access to the best quality healthcare possible. Middlefield needs to offer their patients a triad of care, which includes access, cost and quality of care. There are many factors why a patient may not be able to access care, such as lack of health insurance or financial resources, therefore Middlefield needs to ensure the population that we are affordable and the patient will receive the best possible care regardless of their financial situation. Cost refers to the total expenditures related directly and indirectly to the provision of healthcare. It is imperative that the hospital manages these costs as effectively and efficiently as possible so that these costs do not reflect to our patients and their care. Quality of care can be conceptualized by two measures, process and outcome. Process measures look at the specific components of providing care and assesses whether these concepts are effective in achieving the desired outcomes, i.e., did the patient receive the appropriate care for the diagnosis in the ER? Outcome measures evaluate the end result of care and assess whether treatment has produced the desired outcomes, i.e., did the patient have a heart attack
The role of Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) has changed dramatically in recent years. Currently, the Unite States (U.S.) health care is focusing on delivering a cost -effective health care to all patients. In the last decades, there were many efforts to control health care over spending in the U.S. One of such efforts is to focus on applying proven principles of evidence-based practice and cost-effectiveness to find the least expensive way to produce a specific clinical service of acceptable quality (Bauer, 2010). The vast changes in health care system, such as cost, need for high productivity, limitation on reimbursement, and the inadequacy on access have made APNs to think in a way where they most fit to provide independent care for
The role of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is expanding internationally throughout the healthcare system. Since the initiation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010, there has been an increased need for APNs due to the growing demand for primary care services and increased population that have gained healthcare coverage (Lanthrop & Hodnicki, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of APN and develop a professional development plan for my future career.
Time and again, hospitals are often called upon to improve the quality of its various health care activities in order to better serve patients and immediate communities. A quality improvement plan thus helps in the selection of high priority areas and the utilization of evidence-based practices in conducting the improvement (Berenguer et al., 2010). In view of the healthcare improvement needs of Sunlight Hospital, this paper seeks to classify and justify five measurements of quality of care in a hospital, specify the four main features in a health care organization that can be used in the design of a quality improvement plan, and suggest the salient reasons quality of care would add value and create a competitive advantage
Examining planning for and effectively measuring the health care quality indicators make healthcare quality more transparent and provide information for quality improvement programs and initiatives in the healthcare system.
