Throughout the play, Hamlet teeters on the brink of insanity induced by his actions, or inactions, but never actually crosses the threshold of insanity by balancing the virtues of "playing a role" and self fashioning, with looking at his own sense of self to rationalize his actions throughout the play.

The male characters in Hamlet continually abuse both Ophelia and Gertrude, physically and psychologically, as a pathetic attempt to gain power and control over the situation. One of the greatest examples of psychological abuse comes from the harrowing scene where Hamlet and Ophelia have their final conversation before Hamlet leaves for England. During this rage-induced altercation, Hamlet refuses to accept Ophelia’s returning of the gifts previously given to her from him, saying “I never gave you aught” (3.1.97). Ophelia is appalled as Hamlet continues to insult her and laugh in her face. In the climax of the argument, Hamlet tells Ophelia that she “should not have believed me; for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it: I loved you not” (3.1.117-119). The immense amount of psychological damage received by Ophelia between the addition and removal of love by Hamlet and her father’s death is enough to drive anyone to madness. David M. Smith recounts this as Hamlet’s necessity “to genuine outsideness because of the danger of being co-opted by love” (Smith, 1). However, Hamlet no longer needed to protect himself in his situation. His actions from this scene were not only uncalled for, but added to the slow mental demise of his sweet Ophelia. Hamlet’s next scene of abuse come shortly after this when he goes to speak to Gertrude about her participation in the murder of Old Hamlet. In the story of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Hamlet’s sanity is questioned because of the relationships he had with other characters in the story. Hamlet’s relationship with the other characters did not all start off bad. Gertrude was his mother, Ophelia is the woman that he loved, and Claudius was his stepfather. Amid his feigning of madness, several individuals suspect that Hamlet truly is sane; encounters with Claudius, Gertrude, and Polonius show that Hamlet’s rather false insanity is possibly discovered. Claudius, of course, pays very close attention to every move Hamlet makes. After all, Claudius did kill his father and marry his mother shortly thereafter. When Hamlet begins his mad behavior the king states, “…what he spake, though it lack’d form a little, / Was not like madness. There’s something in his soul…” (56). King Claudius believes that even though Hamlet is acting differently, he is not mad. He specifically states that what Hamlet says is not like madness at all, yet he feels as though there is something else within Hamlet’s soul that is bothering him. Upon Claudius and Polonius informing Gertrude of what they believe is the source of Hamlet’s behavior, Gertrude reminds them “…that it is no other but the main: his father’s death and our [Gertrude and Claudius] o’erhasty marriage” (35). Thus, both Hamlet’s “uncle-father and aunt-mother” declare their son sane and decide that something else is making him act oddly apart from madness (44). Even though Polonius says that Hamlet is mad, he comments “…yet there is method in‘t” to suggest that even though Hamlet may be crazy, perhaps there is a reason behind it (39). Polonius also suggests that Hamlet has a way with words and reflects on “how pregnant sometimes his replies are…” (39). He suggests heavily that perhaps Hamlet is only putting on madness to carry out a plan or a
