More and more often, we are saddened by the news of mass shootings. Whether it takes place in a school or public area, these shootings are both disastrous and mortifying. Families begin to feel anger and sadness and demand immediate justice. Although these terrible events continue to happen, there have been no significant steps taken towards the decrease in the number of weapons; specifically, assault rifles. This leads one to question do we need to ban the right to own such weapons? If the possession of these weapons is not made illegal, we run the risk of another attack. A ban on assault rifles is not the answer because they are not the cause of such events, and it is a constitutional right to own them.
In 1994, Congress passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which eliminated the manufacturing of certain assault rifles for private use (Plumer). This bill expired in 2004 and was never redrafted. Many mass shootings in the last few years, especially ones at Virginia Tech, a movie theater in Colorado, and Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut, Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs have stirred up the pressure to pass a new bill.
Following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, drafted a bill to potentially ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing, and importation of assault rifles. This bill includes a ban on semiautomatic rifles, pistols, shotguns,
In 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School was victim of a terrible mass shooting that prompted several states and cities to pass strict gun control measures. This sparked a widely debated and controversial issue for “gun friendly” states in the South and West, who responded with bills that would strengthen Stand Your Ground laws and allow weapons in most public places. The nation continues to be divided on gun control policies, as it is very controversial and continues to be a very hot topic in society today. There has been a rise in gun violence throughout the years, and it has been widely been debated that guns are too easily accessible and there is a continued push for stricter gun laws that can reduce the risk of gun violence.
The United States contains 5% of the world’s population. However, our nation covers 35-50% of the world’s civilian-owned guns, is ranked first for firearms per capita, and holds the highest homicide rate among all other nations of wealth and democracy at 88.5% (Masters). Such high rates and loose restrictions are bound to lead to tragedy. We will not sit here and make excuses, we will not allow power in the hands of insanity, and we will not allow the safety of our children to be hindered. After each tragedy that has struck, we have failed to successfully improve gun control. As of now, we hold no federal law banning semi-automatic assault weapons, just like the weapons used in the Las Vegas massacre, resulting in
The current legislation in America is pushing for an “Assault Weapon” ban, in the hopes of diminishing and stop, mass shootings and gun crime, although the ban of “Assault Weapons” will have absolutely no effect on gun crimes and mass shootings. We as Americans are in a crossroad, dived in this issue we face today, everyone has different views and opinions on how should we approach these assault weapons, that we are constantly being informed on the daily news, commonly used by portrayers of evil. The majority of Americans, that are not informed with the way current gun laws, and restrictions are normally the ones that agree with an assault weapon bar or stricter gun control laws.
The mounting deaths and associated trauma from mass shootings should motivate us to take action to make needed reforms to our gun laws, focus law enforcement resources on combating illegal gun possession and invest in prevention initiatives proven to reduce gun violence. Assault weapons cause more harm than good when they are able to purchased and owned by private citizens. And while most who do own and use these powerful weapons for harmless, recreational activities or a sense of protection, the fact is that when they fall into the hands of individuals who are not mentally sound enough to possess something of such force, the result is one of horrific tragedy. The government must take into consideration the hundreds of innocent people who have lost their lives as a result of these dangerous weapons, and work on ways to prevent
What brought this law about are the tragedies of 2012 that caused ripples in all ideas for assault weapons. The shootings that lead to this are tragic and not to be overlooked.
There are numerous types of firearms that are available for people to purchase. But, many in the government are trying to pass the assault weapons ban in the United States. An assault weapon is a semi-automatic firearm with a large capacity magazine. It is considered a military rifle and can cause severe damage. According to Phelan IV, “In December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children between six and seven years old, as well as six adult staff members with an assault weapon (Phelan IV).” This brought varying opinions on whether an assault weapons should be banned at the federal level. Opponents say assault weapons should not be banned because of the second amendment and because gun control efforts have proved to be ineffective; however, these weapons should be banned in the U.S., as it is rarely used in self-defense and it can build a safer society.
In 1944, congress passed a ten-year ban on Assault Weapons on the civilian use of assault weapons, certain types of semi-automatic firearms. The ban expired in 2004 has not been reinstated. The gun used for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, was a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle, which was in this category. The Federal Assault Weapon Ban was not effective at all, it had many loopholes. It was easy for the manufacturers to change their illegal product to not fall under the ban. For example, James Holmes used a Colt AR-15 (Illegally obtained) to shoot up a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. But, if he purchased a similar Colt Match Target
The United States of America is a nation of massacres by military-type assault weapons. Aware of the deadliness of these weapons and due to public safety concerns clearly outweighing the benefits of personal ownership of military-type assault weapons, the United States passed the 1994 Federal Ban on military-type assault weapons. This ban was notably effective during the 10 years it was in effect. However, the Ban automatically expired in 2004. Since that time, the number of U. S. mass murders has markedly increased. Attempts to reinstate the Ban, most recently the stricter 2013 Ban, have all failed. Nevertheless, the less restrictive 1994 Ban did pass the Senate and House of Representatives at one point and was successful. Therefore, the 1994 Federal Ban on military-type assault weapons should be reinstated.
On Dec. 14, Adam Peter Lanza took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., using mainly a Bushmaster XM-15. Both rifles were legally bought in the United States. This could have been prevented if people didn’t insist on letting everyone carry whatever weapon they please. (As you can see not all weapons are bought illegally, another safety issue.) I understand regular guns for safety, for the show, or even hunting, but you don’t need an assault weapon to be safe.
On July 20, 2012, people filed into the Century Aurora 16 Multiplex Theater in Aurora, Colorado to see the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Everyone entered the movie theater that night without fear, but that quickly changed eighteen minutes into the film. James Holmes left and returned back to the movie theater with AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and one .40-caliber handguns and eventually killing 12 people and wounding 70 others. If a range of proposed federal reforms designed to strengthen gun laws had been in place, many mass shootings, such as the one in Aurora Colorado, could have been prevented. The United States needs to implement stricter gun laws. The controversial debate over gun rights is as old as the history of the United States. It is time for lawmakers to create and enforce stronger restrictions on guns. There have been too many high profile/ mass shootings in the recent years for people to continue ignoring the problem of people’s easy access to guns. With a rich history of controversy, the debate over gun rights continues as numerous mass shootings have led to a renewed push for gun regulation. Although, many do not believe the government should ban all guns, high powered military assault weapons, have no place in the general public.
In a clear, concise definition, the assault weapons ban, banned the manufacture or importation of certain semi-automatic firearms that it defined as "semiautomatic assault weapons," commonly known as assault weapons. Who was responsible for this idea? Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she would introduce new law to ban assault weapons at the start of the next year for legislation. President Obama also said that he'd “support a federal ban.” Congress was involved also with the legislation ban on the ban as well. However with this ban was then lifted in 2004. Now why is that? I feel some believed that there was some loopholes in the law in the broad category of assault weapons.
Assault weapon control is becoming an unavoidable topic in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation more than nine hundred people have died from mass shootings in the past seven years and an assault rifle was used in twelve of the forty-three mass shootings in the past four years. The U.S. Department of Defense has long defined assault rifles as fully automatic rifles used for military purposes. The National Firearm Act of 1934 prohibited fully automatic weapons in the United States. The 1994 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited semi and fully automatic weapons and any weapon with military style characteristics. California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, is leading the charge in the American government to pass a bill that
Gun violence and gun control have been in the news a lot lately. This is because of the recent shooting in Newtown, Connecticut where 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School and his mother at their home.
There are new proposed gun control laws in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut that occurred on December 14th, 2012. This incident claimed the lives of twenty 1st graders and six adults and has set the government in motion to try to prevent future acts of violence by strengthening gun control laws in the United States (Smith). This has been a topic that has been an extremely emotional debate with people on both sides unwilling to compromise. Gun advocates and critics of the new proposed gun laws argue that these new laws infringe on our constitutional
Barack Obama as the rhetor, directed towards American people to pressure congress to pass new gun legislation in Connecticut, where the massacre took place. After the December 16, 2012 shooting at Newtown Connecticut, there has been a controversial debate among gun control. The National Rifle Association had fiercely lobbied congress to oppose any gun regulations. In this artifact, Obama spoke on behalf of the murders of twenty children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. During his speech, President Obama was hoping to build support among lawmakers for several gun control measures, such as universal background checks. The president has the parents’ support to lobby for gun legislation. In addition, Obama’s proposal to ban assault rifles and limiting high-ammunition guns; majority of Republicans oppose this proposal.
