Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success
In my current role as a nurse educator I feel the desire to pursue my dream of obtaining a master’s degree, specializing in nursing education. It has been 27 years since I have sat in the student chair in a classroom; therefore, I anticipate a number of challenges and barriers to overcome. In this paper I will present and describe three challenges that I expect to be faced with over the next two years. I will also discuss the strategies I plan to use to address these challenges.

English is my second language, and that is why, I tend to think in Spanish and then translate into English. Some research shows that bilingualism may actually help the brain to process language differently, and that late learners may not think like native speakers, but they are still capable of mastery of a new set of language skills (Kovelman, Baker & Petitto, 2008). I have always considered English to be a challenging language for foreigners to learn. However, I hope to find that many of the online resources like CWE, APA format, River point, WritePoint and the library at University of Phoenix will help me to develop and improve these weak areas. I also expect to be able to ask students and nursing co-workers to provide feedback of my work. Additionally, I anticipate that my confidence and abilities with language skills will improve with each written assignment and oral presentation. As my comfort level with my English skills increases I expect to be able achieve the concept explain by Benner in her work describing nurses’ proficiency levels from novice to expert (Benner, 1984). Currently I would describe my written English proficiency as a novice beginner. A third challenge I will be facing is time management. One of my most important roles in life is being a mother and a wife.
