Genre Analysis
Jenny Mollen, an American actress and New York best selling author, once said, “I think the power of persuasion would be the greatest superpower of all time” (“Jenny Mollen Quotes”, n.d.). In other words, if you are able to persuade someone, you can basically get anything you want. Today, many expert writers utilizes genre conventions to state their purpose and to persuade their audience. First of all, what is a genre convention? Genre convention is defined as a communication or a connection for writers and readers through the structure, reference, or language of an essay. For example, if a famous science author wrote a scientific journal article, then the

In the article, the most repetitive word that was used was biotechnology. When the word “biotechnology” appears, the author usually describes the negative or positive effects of it. An example is when the author stated, “Biotechnology cannot provide secure food and reduce poverty during the development world.(Lesik,2017)” Therefore, this will inform and make the reader understand that biotechnology is being discussed in the paragraph. Another language that the author used was their “point of view”. The author used the third person point of view to provide evidence for his article. By using the third person point of view, it made his article sound more effective and scholarly, because he does not use the words, “I” or “we”.
The second genre convention that the author used was structure. For a scientific journal article, the structure usually contains different sections such as an introduction, material/methods, data, results, and a conclusion. The purpose of having this structure is to organize the information, and to make it easier to identify for readers. In my article, the article has the same structure, but it does not have the same sections that were listed above. Instead, it have sections such as a problem setting, research objective, key search finding, and a conclusion. The problem setting section provided a brief introduction of the problem regarding to genetically modified organisms. For that section, it is stated that genetically modified organisms
Relevant literature usually addresses real-life situations, bringing light to serious issues. Most of the time, an author will write in hopes to influence others to believe a certain way. Authors must strategize to master the art of persuasion. There are multiple appeals a writer may use in order to get their point across to the audience. The Jungle and Fast Food Nation use ethos, pathos, and logos in efforts to gain support towards their purpose of improving the work conditions and quality of life for immigrants.
Thank You For Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion is a title written by the not-so-famous, (but extremely well-versed) Jay Heinrichs. Although the title is indeed a mouthful, it serves its purpose in drawing the reader in. Also; the extremely long title is a little hint of what Heinrichs entails in his book, an endless supply of information on how to correctly and influentially utilize rhetoric, the art of persuasion.
In his essay, “Navigating Genres”, Kerry Dirk describes rhetorical genres in funny layman’s terms which made me want to read more. Dirk states the obvious – that through everyday life, we are familiar with different rhetorical genres because we encounter and use them every day. We may not be conscious of it, but whenever we listen to a particular kind of song, or see a TV advertisement for a product we use, or hear a political commentator on the radio, we are being exposed to various rhetorical genres. When we see a horror flick, we are being exposed to another type. When we “post” on Facebook or Instagram, we are using a relatively new kind of genre which came about in response to the digital age.
Authors, people, and writers over time have used the available means of persuasion and making sure that they include what the rhetorical situation is. In the four texts about the 1969 Apollo 11 mission that talk about the first humans that landed on the moon, all were effective due to them showing ethos, pathos, logos, and soaps which are the rhetorical appeals that one has to use when making an argument in a rhetorical situation.

Analyzing Stylistic Choices helps you see the linguistic and rhetorical choices writers make to inform or convince readers.
Through the use of ethos, pathos, and/or logos; style, word choice, and tone; and the author's purpose are magnified through the authors use of language. As an author, the goal is not to change the reader's mind, but to help he or she see a new point of view using ethos, pathos, and/or logos; style, word choice, and tone. Through many persuasive techniques, writers bring credibility to their arguments. The beginning remarks
Every piece of writing has a purpose, whether it be to entertain, inform, or persuade. Many pieces that successfully achieve their purpose use audience appeals to gain the readers confidence. One well-known example is the United States Declaration of Independence. In Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, ethos, pathos, and logos are all used to create a persuasive document.
Also, refutation is developed to win the argument and completely smash your opponents facts and argument. At the end, Heinrichs explains the conclusion where the individual states their best points from the argument. Style is how a person expresses their thoughts and words. Proper language is one of the styles which are words “that suit the occasion and my audience”(287). Heinrichs also explains the style of clarity, which is speaking to make the words obvious and straight facts. Also, Memory is used to create an image in the audience's minds to make them feel and imagine what the individual is talking about to persuade the audience more impactfully. Finally, the fifth canon of persuasion is delivery and how the person uses “body language, along with your voice, rhythms, and breathing”(290). Voice is key in delivery especially in the volume of the voice and how the audience emphasises the tone of the speaker. Towards the end of the novel, Heinrichs reiterates on a few keywords including: goals, ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos. Heinrichs also states examples of situations when these tools are needed. An example is when a person wants their book club to read a
Ethos was the most prevalent rhetorical appeal as a result of the styles it was presented in. This appeal is used to persuade the audience that you are a credible source which can influence how your audience thinks about the topic; therefore, mentioning credible sources helped aid in the author’s persuasion: “Just this summer the Supreme Court of Nevada upheld the admissibility of rap lyrics as evidence in a first-degree murder case” (Nielson and Kubrin). Mentioning the Supreme Court, makes readers more opt to believe the writer’s view due to the fact that these officials have a strong background with the law. Moreover, the fact that explicit rap lyrics were used as evidence by high level officials can also persuade the audience that this is
In this chapter, Heinrichs talks about three major tools of rhetoric that could help with persuasion. Many tough arguments can be easily won with one or all of these tools. Logos is used when a person is using his intelligence to win an argument. This can be useful when persuading a child that too much television is bad. Pathos is used when someone is using his/her emotions to persuade someone. It can be helpful when trying to make someone happy by sympathizing with their sadness. Finally there is ethos, a useful tool to someone who are consider popular among the social group(s). Many famous actors convinced many people to donate to those who had their homes destroyed due to an earthquake. They accomplished this because of their reputation. They used ethos to convince many people to do what the actors wanted them to do. With these three tools, many arguments can be
The musical film has always held a special place for me. From my time as a drama student in high school, my eyes have been opened to the amazing world of the musical and especially the musical film. The musical film is a film genre in which the characters sing songs that are integrated into the overall story. Since musicals first began in theaters, musical films usually contain similar elements. These elements often simulate that there is a live audience watching. In a sense, the film viewers become the audience members, at a theater production, as the actor performs directly to them. Due to the popularity of musicals in the theater, the style was quickly brought over into film. In 1927, the musical film genre began
To convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character. Ethical appeal; Ethos. “Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a new pet. The number of euthanized animals could be changed dramatically if more people adopted pets instead of buying them.” The Humane Society of the United States. Every time you adopt a pet you’re saving it’s life. Now i’m not a very good example as I just bought a dog from a breeder a week ago, but my family has adopted. We had heard of this pitbull mix that was at the Sulphur Springs Animal Shelter. He had only a couple of days left before he was going to be euthanized. My sister, Jamie, is very in love with pitbulls so we went to go check him
Jean Brant used all the basic features of the genre in her essay. At first, this essay was a well-told
