nglish 203 teaches us how to Paraphrase, Annotate and Summarize texts that we read in class. These are skills I have learnt earlier but never really had a chance to put into practice. When I was given reading responses and an exploratory synthesis to do, they required all of these three skills, meaning I was able to practice them and extend my ability to do them. From writing workshops and a one on one conference with my teacher I was successfully able to understand how to use ideas and quotes from writers by paraphrasing, annotating or summarizing them. I improved the way in which I integrated quotes successfully and smoothly into my work, minimizing free standing quotes from appearing in my writing pieces. This greatly improved the flow of …show more content…
These errors have weakened my writing and have drawn away attention from my content. I need to pay close attention in the future to these reoccurring mistakes. I have also learnt in this course that long paragraphs concerning one topic should be reviewed, and I should create a backwards outline so that I am able to break them down into several smaller paragraphs with different focal points. I have learnt how important grammar and organization is in my work and that I should not only pay attention to the content, which I have done previously. Grammar can change the whole meaning and understanding of a piece of writing, now I am well aware of this and hope to improve this throughout the rest of the course.
Not only have I learnt writing skills throughout this course but also have gained a strong opinion and a great understanding of the various topics we covered such as attitudes towards pre marital sex, sex reassignment and the rejection of homosexuals. These topics have opened my eyes to the importance of fitting into the confines of normalcy or else being marginalized, something that I had never really noticed. It also broadened my knowledge about the social norms and sexism that exist in the Arab
Throughout this course, I was able to assess and evaluate my weaknesses and strengths in writing. This class has truly brought out my ability to write, a skill I did not believe I had. I now know what it takes to become a college-level writer. Also, at the beginning of the course I did not particularly enjoy writing. Now, however, I have a greater respect for
Writing 205 has taught me more then just writing stratagies, it has taught me who I am as a writer. Throughout the course of the semester I have learned new strategies, techniques, and tools that have helped me develop as a writer, as well as establishing my voice. Through vigorous course work I can say that I am more educated on writing skills in addition to annotating sources and genres. Reflecting back on this past semester I see how each unit has branched from each other as a guide for what was to come next. This made going from unit to unit flow in a natural way to achieve the best final product.
In high school, I took both AP English Language and AP English Literature. These courses prepared me well for college composition courses, but left me in the dark regarding the personal style development in writing and writing patterns. I was trapped in the high school, five-paragraph essay form that constricted my thoughts for so long. Discourse 300 enabled me to move past the form and explore new ways to compose writing. This in turn has made my thoughts more complex and concise. I have learned to sustain a logical argument in a much more organized manner and justify it as well. My writing was finally rid of all the “fluff” and “padding” that was a necessity in high school to reach a word count. Another improvement I made
When I started this semester in English 111, I wasn’t must of a writer. I made a lot of grammar errors that a novice writer would make. Over the semester I have improved my writing skills due to this class. In the beginning of the semester we were asked to write an essay to see what type of writers we were as an individual. I struggled to write that first essay, because I would over think the essay while in deep thought thinking what the professor would think of my writing. Furthermore, I showed my writing skills as writer and scored a high grade on my first essay that I was overthinking. However, I realized that I made some that I made a few minor errors in my first essay of the semester. For example hooks are
It was very to easy to have small mistakes in my paper. I use a couple grammar check websites to help me find any errors in my summary paper. I know that I have bad grammar so I use
The two errors that present the biggest challenge to me in writing are comma splice and unnecessary commas. All throughout high school and into college these two errors have been my biggest downfall. In Fall 2014 semester, I took English 111 and my teacher had written on every paper that I wrote that I have to be careful of both comma splice and unnecessary commas. I can use this class as an opportunity to correct these errors by referring back to this book. In my other class, we didn’t use a book so I never had something to help me understand what exactly I was doing wrong. I hope that with help from my classmates and my teacher I can overcome this obstacle I face in my writing. In addition, I plan to use the book to help me when I am uncertain
Throughout your paper I did find a few grammatical, and spelling error. I will try my best to include as many as I found. I will also include the sentence below my comment, so that you have a better understanding of what I am pointing out.
It is with hope that I do not make those mistakes in my own writing going forward as my mind is always distracted and general requires a lot of efforts to focus, fortunately the student guide is a excellent writing companion as it will always remind us of the value and advantages of proper planning
Prior to entering English 101, my writing was filled, chockablock with comma errors— errors where either a comma was needed, or where a comma wasn't needed. Additionally, I was a sharer of a terrible habit: Using words and/or phrases that serve as unnecessary fillers. It was something I did without any cognizance; in fact, I have no recollection of those typos. In order for me to manifestly lay out how radioactive these habits have been for me, I must detail the various errors I made in two projects I completed in English 101.
The first way this course has helped me is by introducing me to annotating article which I know will be helpful for me in Comp II in helping me formulate my research papers and in turn achieving my Comp II goals. The second way I believe this course has helped me and will be useful to me in other courses is by showing me how to organize my paper in a logical manner and be more mentally creative when describing a situation or event. The last way I believe this course has helped me is by teaching me how to be more descriptive, how to focus on details and how to transition smoothly when writing, which is something that I believe will be useful in any class when writing any paper not just in English. These particular skills were most useful in helping me write my Film Review, “ The American Dream.” “The seamless storyline wouldn't be anything if it wasn’t complemented by the sensational acting done mostly by Chris and his son Christopher. To be more specific, the scene where Chris was shown crying on the bathroom floor after his son Christopher went to sleep, due to his confound embarrassment of him not being able to provide proper shelter for his son.” In just these two simple sentence I show my abilities of how to connect one idea to the next and still have it flow smoothly while at the same time I am showing my abilities of how I was focused on the detail of the movie and yet still very descriptive while explaining it, which is why this is my favorite
Among many things, I learned out of this course, here are a three outcome that is worth mentioning. First, responding orally and in writing to evaluate, analyze, and critically assess the ideas and meaning of diverse texts. Second, making appropriate rhetorical decisions to achieve the purpose of a written work, based on an understanding of ethical issues and underlying assumptions and values in the argument. Third, demonstrating understanding of the interdependent relationship of reading, writing, and thinking and reflect on their thinking as part of a larger community of thinkers.
Researching the errors in ‘section four – refining your writing’ in the unit textbook and
Reading these pages and the documents were interesting and they definitely helped me realize my mistakes in my writing. I always get nervous whenever I write an essay and it stresses me out if I made a lot of mistakes.
The grammar issues is having difficulties with subject-verb agreement and also comma splices. What I have done to fix it is to get better at noticing where they should be located. Also to use the worksheet that I have from last term in Eng. 101. There is a website that helps with the issues I have in my papers. Commas are a big issue when it come up to using it after the words: Yet, Also, Therefore, and also through sentences that need them as well. Yes, my style has come a long way compare to how it was when I first got here it is now better. Because I took a teacher that was willing to help, and talk me through things that I didn’t understand helped. Also have the conference and office hours helped as well. Knowing that I could contact her
The things learned during the class, English 203, has not only helped the ability to write better, but also the ability to expand the research on each paper I have written. From the very beginning of this semester, I was taught to write an abstract, which I have never done before, but the basis of an abstract is to look at the big picture and take all the important points of a paper. Also, the papers that was written throughout the semester was not all based around one topic. The topics varied from sciences to engineering feats, while also coming up with our own business proposal where we learned how to format and make it a clean presentation of the idea, and finally we had to research Spartacus, and how it relates to history whether it is historically accurate or not. Taking English 203 has furthered my ability to write papers learning different techniques and ideas making myself a better writer.
