What are the positive effects sports have on children? This question has a wide variety of answers. Some may say sports can help with intelligence, building relationships, and activity, while others see sports as overwhelming or dangerous. Sports can influence a child’s well being far greater than most can imagine. From their mental and physical development, to their bright futures, sports play an important role in a young boy or girl’s lifetime. Specifically, tennis is one of the best sports to support the development and futures of children. The future of a child is very important and it is critical that it does not become endangered by negative factors.

But no other sport received such acclaim for its great benefits physically, mentally and emotionally.” (Groppel) Along with the teaching of respect, sportsmanship, healthy habits, fairness, and the basics, tennis helps kids develop hand-eye coordination, positive characteristics, and acquire tactical thinking. Tennis is a very mental game. It is optimal that you have control over your emotions as well as figure out your opponent's mentality. “The tactical aspect of the game keeps your mind occupied while your body gets a good workout—the short term goals of reaching that little yellow ball in time makes it a complex sport full of small rewards and limitless challenges.” (Cramton) Teaching a kid these rather complex ideas from a young age will not only aid them with their tennis skills but also their life skills to come in the future.
Tennis has its benefits that jump starts a child’s development and knowledge of life lessons, but it also has its benefits of providing a future for young players who work hard to be successful. Today there is an ever growing debate on whether competitive sports are beneficial or harmful to children. While many people believe that they can be harmful, in this article I will show you some of the many ways they can be helpful to kids. There are three reasons I decided to outline here; there are life lessons can be learned, sports help improve health and they help to build self-esteem and confidence.
As a Professional Tennis Coach I want my students to be the best they can be in tennis, i use that mentality to try their hardest in everything they do. I also want to create future tennis pro’s, by training them everyday they can develop their game to get at least a college scholarship.

Positive Physical Effects. The most tangible effects on children who play sports is the effects on children’s bodies. According to the author of the book ReSYNC Your Life, Samir Becic, kids are not as injury-prone when involved in athletics because sports help to boost a child’s skeletal and muscular system (“Top 10 Benefits of Youth Sports”). Not only does a healthy, uninjured child feel better, parents also save money by not having to go to the Emergency Room as often. In Becic’s eyes, fighting obesity by keeping kids moving is another positive influence of sports (“Top 10 Benefits of Youth Sports”). Obesity is an ever-growing problem in our society, and obesity leads to multiple different health issues including heart problems. Becic explains that playing sports as a child promotes a healthy heart, which ultimately suppresses the chance of heart disease (“Top 10 Benefits of Youth Sports”). These studies show that by participating in athletics as a child, that child is likely to see their physical health improve.
Sports can be viewed as a learning environment that helps individuals learn life lessons, foster strong work habits and develop core values all the while learning a sport skill. Youth sports that truly benefit young athletes should be structured to emphasize participation more than just competition. Children enjoy a sport more when they are able to have fun (Humpries). Despite many excesses some sport programs still manage to promote important virtues like self- confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, coping skills, and persistence. Through sports kids can learn to stay organized and learn how to prioritize (Ferguson). Sports enables development of physical skills and increasing proficiency makes kids feel good about themselves. It teaches kids that failure is something to overcome and and not to fear (Meyerhoff 8-9). Youth sports has many aspects that are truly benefiting for children, but these benefits are slowly being clouded by the negatives that are prominent in today's youth sports.

It’s been debated that having kids participate in sports can be either a positive or negative factor in a child’s development. Is participating in sports a positive outcome in a youth’s development? Through my own personal experience and through the research that I have conducted I believe that participating in sports is a true benefit to a child’s development. Participating in sports can contribute to a healthy individual, developing problem-solving skills, social interaction, promotes following direction and rules, goal setting and creating plans, promotes self-esteem, reduces stress, helps academic success, and a higher quality of life.
Noreen was inspired to start playing herself, by watching her brother from the sidelines. Although she discovered tennis at a very young age, she did not start playing, until she was ten. Noreen was preoccupied with dance and other activities, and never got around to actually playing herself. Noreen began training recreationally but soon started playing at some academies. This year, she entered into high school and joined the Piedmont High varsity tennis team. From being a part of a supportive team, with amazing coaches, Noreen has learned a lot from her teammates along with exposure to many remarkable experiences. With an abundance of wonderful role models from her team surrounding her, she is inspired to constantly try her best and to appreciate tennis. Playing tennis is a challenging sport that not everyone can play. It not only uses physical strength, but it involves mental strength. You have to be able to push through whatever obstacles there are. In order to play tennis, you have to be able to withstand the heat of the sun, losing, and negative people around yelling at you to do better even if that is the bet you can do.
Through experiences of playing sports and pursuing academics for the past three years, I found it always difficult to balance school and athletics. Coming home from practice or matches, eating dinner, showering, and doing homework until three in the morning seemed like a constant, repeating cycle. I always caught myself drowsing during class, but still having the capacity to pay attention, take notes, and complete tasks. Despite the struggle of stabilizing schoolwork and sports, I was aware of the fact that I aspired to play tennis, especially since I enjoyed playing with my father every weekend. Playing tennis for many years, my dad was a main reason why I took interest in enduring the sport. Although my father and I played for fun, I witnessed his motivation, perseverance, and dedication to the sport while playing, whether it was playing against amatuer me, or competing with others who ranged from adequate to professional. When I get on the tennis court, I feel like all of my problems slip away like i have nothing to worry about. If I'm angry, I play tennis to relieve it and take it out on the ball. When I'm sad, I play it to make since of my thoughts and feelings. Even though it's just a physical sport to some people, it has been my go to for everything and when I do, it has an odd but great way to remove all of my problems, even if it's just for those moments. I play tennis at the end of every school day and on most of the weekends and breaks.
Children who participate in sports are developing rapidly in sports skills, sportsmanship, and psychologically, but does this come from organized sports are just nature’s process. Children develop emotional and social benefits from participating in sports. Children experience character and leadership development through peer relations leading to an increase in self-esteem and a decrease in anxiety levels. Children will get opportunities to experience positive and negative emotions throughout their practice and games trials. It is important for the coach to understand the “psychology of youth sports and physical activity participation” (Weinberg & Gould, 2011 p.516).
