In many papers you will notice different types of persuasion that help the writer to give a reader a better of understanding of the paper. These types of persuasion are called rhetorical appeals. Each appeal has its own ability to give to the writer's paper, ethos is the credibility of the work the writer is using, pathos is appealing to the audience’s emotions, and lastly logos is the logical appeal. When writing a paper a person generally uses at least one rhetorical appeal to persuade their audience. Logos is used to describe facts and evidence that supports the writer’s thesis. It gives the writer a chance to show the reader that they did the research and found believable evidence . When I give a statement from a doctor or the American Lung Association, then those sources will be credible because they know what they are talking about, and will show the reader that I am a credible writer. Since the topic is “Cigarettes are bad for you,” the sources for me to use have to be credible so that my claim is supported and I have the evidence to back it up. Pathos is the last appeal and it gets in touch with the reader's emotions. This is probably the most important one. If you do not give the audience a sense a feeling within the paper, then they would feel as if the paper is pointless because there is no emotion involved. The type of emotion to get my claim across could be a very touching sad story about someone who either has come across the bad side of cigarettes, or someone who has lost a loved one to cigarettes. Pathos and ethos are both very important to tie the story together because they show that the writer knows what they are talking about. Rhetorical appeals are the basis of an essay if you either want to get your point across, or you want to persuade someone to be on your side of the argument. Using all three appeals to work together give the essay a perfect way to show the audience that your side is what they should choose.
