Most parents have debates in whether "to spank or not spank' when it comes to their children discipline. However, the first and the most common response of many parents are to spank, then probable trouble back in their mind and ask themselves, did my response was okay? One very simple word that describes discipline is training. A child is not born with the knowledge of what is acceptable or expected. A parent must invest their own time and patience while showing love and exemplary behavior while molding their children into becoming well behaved (Child Abuse vs. Discipline). Being a parent is a hard enough job already, but when it comes to being a parent having to discipline your child, it becomes much harder. It takes time for a child to learn and process new behaviors, and this is a reason a parent must not have a short fuse when it comes to discipling their children.

But, howcome no one ever talks about the well being of the parents as well. A hardworking mother can be deemed as a failure to her child all because she wanted to help them. The mother could have had the same punishment as a child, and since it seemed like it worked for her, she carried it on into her own personal life. The child recieves a "wooping" and suddenly feels so terrified to even wake up in the middle of the night. Even after years of research, the issue of whether spanking is an adequate discipline strategy or damaging to children remains a controversial topic. According to Kazdin and Benjet (2003) the definition of spanking is “. . . hitting a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intent to discipline without leaving a bruise or causing physical harm (p. 100). In addition, according to Maguire-Jack, Gromoske and Berger (2012) only a few studies propose that spanking is an effective form of discipline. On the other hand, there is more evidence to show that spanking is an unsuccessful form of discipline that can led to unwanted consequences (p. 1960). I personally do not take a stance in this topic because I can see valid points from both parties. Although, I believe that the way the punishment is presented to the child is extremely important. For example, I feel that the child should know why he or she is punished and what is expected of them thereafter.

The concern is not regarding the effectiveness of spanking but the correctness of spanking. Parents should not be allowed to strike their children. The reason is because to effectively study either side of this controversy, a longitudinal study is required. To see if there are any benefits of spanking, studies may need to last as long as twenty or thirty years to assess benefits that carry out into adulthood and parenting. Studies lasting this long become difficult for participants to follow up with. However, it is important that more research be done to see if there are any benefits related to spanking children.
