I do need to be aware that I will need to adapt the way I communicate with different audiences because different people all require me to connect with them in a variety of different styles, i.e. adult-adult, child-child, adult-child. By using effective communication I am able to help clear up conflicts, build harmony and overcome any communication gaps which, themselves can create conflict amongst people. When I am communicating with children/young people I need to ensure that I am always clear and to the point and that I am using a style and method of communication that is appropriate to their age, needs and abilities. This would involve me using words and phrases that children will understand, making use of facial gestures and body language, actively listening to them, making sure my responses remain positive when the children express their own views and feelings; and checking points to re-inforce their understanding and knowledge. I need to make sure I am speaking clearly and slowly so that the child understands what I am trying to say and that everyone gets a turn to speak about what they want to say. I also have to listen to the child/young person, make eye contact with them and use active listening so that they know that I am giving them my full attention. I need to ensure that I am approachable and that I get down to the child’s level as it can be intimidating if someone is towering over them. Every child needs communication to help promote their learning and development. Every child needs a good listener and eye contact when talking.

Communication is constantly happening within the day care centre and in my job role I have a responsibility to communicate with staff, service users and other professionals. I use various forms of communication but I also seek to make sure that it is understood. Communication has got to be understood before it can be effective and so I try to ensure comprehension when I am verbally speaking by getting staff to repeat what I have asked them to do. I also write simply worded memos and emails to ensure ease of comprehension. It is the central key to establishing and maintaining such positive relationships. Age of child or young person: You need to be adaptable in the way you communicate when working with children and young adults. A young child will need clear and sometimes lengthy instructions on how to do something. Whereas older children and young adults tend to grasp things quicker and you can explain things in a more mature fashion. Some younger children like to have physical contact as well, especially if they feel lonely or scared i.e. when they are upset and trying to explain to you what is wrong, an arm around them or holding their hand will give them reassurance. Communication with kids has many steps, for instance you need to have a general understanding of several kinds of kids’ personalities , know some reward and punishment tools, and be a wise when you decided to treat them.
When we communicate with people be it children young people or adults we adapt our communication to the appropriate language. We will do this automatically if we are in a meeting with other professionals, we will act and speak in a formal and professional manner, whilst speaking to a infant we will be more animated and speak in a higher voice which we know will keep the babies attention. So when I communicate with children I need to be clear so they can understand what is expected of them.

Being able to communicate to infants, toddlers, children and adolescents can be quite challenging because children are at age where they can communicate, but don’t know how to verbally express it sometimes. So, as a clinical child psychologist, learning unique and creative ways to communicate with children is very necessary in order to get them to respond back effectively for you. Also, this is very important in delivering an effective treatment.
