Environmentalism as religion
As global warming intensifies, glaciers melt and forests reduced, more and more people begin to be concerned about environment problem. Environment is the fundamental of our existence,so we need protect environment. Paul H. Rubin in his article “Environmentalism as religion” says “But there is another sense in which environmentalism is becoming more and more like a religion: It provides its adherents with an identity”(399). He thinks environmentalism like a religion, and environmentalism and religion have many same characteristic. I agree Rubin’s opinion. Like religion, environmentalism has difference tribe, environmentalist like a missionary, environmentalism and religion both have food taboos and they also

But if we don’t protect earth, we will face more and more environment problem, global warming intensifies, glaciers melt and forests reduced. We can live in earth. So, if we protect environment, it will be better. Environmentalist also gives people a hope.
Rubin says, “There are food taboos. Instead of eating fish on Friday, or avoiding pork, Greens now eat organic foods and many are moving towards eating only locally grown
Generally, Greenpeace International believes that the environment can be protected by changing the way people understand the world. “ It aims to influence public understanding of the negative environmental impact of much human behaviour. Expectedly, people will undertake actions that are more respectful to the ecological integrity of the planet” (Siti Rokhmawati Susanto, 2007: 186-205).
Caring for this earth is a duty of our faith and a way to respect God’s creations. Regardless of a person’s background, culture, or religious preferences, we are all called to protect the planet on which we live to preserve the future of the earth. As stewards and stewardesses called by God to share the responsibility for the future of the earth, we must work to protect all of creation for the sake of future
Native Americans have an intimate relationship with the Earth that is very unusual to western culture. For centuries before the arrival of Europeans, Native Americans lived off the land in North America, without claiming ownership or creating massive environmental destruction. They have both a deep love and fear for the power of nature, and try to live as one with the environment. Because of this common value among tribes, Native Americans are often stereotyped as being the first environmentalists, which is not entirely true. Native Americans do value and treasure the environment, but not always in the way western environmentalists imagen. Modern environmentalists grew up in a different culture, one that embraces development and progress
Historically, Christians primary focus has been on heaven and the afterlife and little focus has been placed on the health of the environment. In recent years, there has been a new movement surface called Creation Care or Evangelical Environmentalism. This movement stems from scriptures in the Bible saying that man is to keep and maintain creation. “The Lord God took the man and put him in
I’ve experienced confusion and anxiety over messages about food since I decided to become a vegetarian almost eight years ago. Contradicting information from scientific studies, social pressures, and irresolvable questions of ethics have played tug-of-war with my opinions, and those of most other Americans, throughout our lives. Pollan argues that this distress of being required to make choices among so much conflicting and biased information has turned America into a food-obsessed society, one that is eternally focused on but paradoxically distracted by the seemingly simple issue of what to eat.
The environment can be described as all those elements, both the living and the non-living that surrounds us. The environment can also refer to the condition within which individuals, animals and plants lives. Mankind has a role to play in the environment, which mainly concerns taking care of the environment as well as improving it. Since, we as human beings are different from animals as we have a gift consciousness, we have an obligation of being improvers of the environment through ensuring that we observe environmental consciousness and that we avoid all those practices that negatively affects the environment and cause ecological crisis and problems. This essay will use the article “Towards a Buddhist Environmental Ethics” by Rita M Gross to help in the answering of the question “What is our appropriate role in relation the environment?” The essay will additionally look into the concept of ‘deep ecology’ by Bill Devall and George Sessions to get a deeper understanding of the ecology and our relationship with it, a concept that will help us to be in a better position to answer our appropriate role concerning the environment.
This article presents worrying examples in ecological ideas regarding the problems of social justice and the environment such as global warming (Kao, 97). Search the importance of theology in the care of creation and suggests being aware of their problems at the micro and macro level. Kao gives a disturbing approach as culture and community has a Christian and / or theological responsibility to this issue, including us as individuals. Kao is operating under a Christian's ethical understanding and relationship with the environment in environmental concerns. The correct list of certain actions and principles that can and should be used by the Christian communities to fight climate change awareness, open windows to open for discussion and possible
An environmentalist is a person worships the environment and cares for nature more than people. Christians and others share the common perception that environmental ethics exist for how human beings should relate to the land, the free market perceptive and the environmental perceptive. Humans share a relationship with all creations of the earth. But as humans, they find themselves as having a role in the created order which is they have a closer relationship with the creator who has charged them with acting responsible within his creation. Even allowing a common complaint of environmental activists is that Stewardship means that the earth was made exclusively because of human beings - that having dominion upper nature is the same as
The authors and I both seem to come to the conclusion of Yes, it is a new rising culture and religion, but do we really need it? Just to be clear I am not saying that I will turn on my faith in god and go to the “ultimate environmentalism” one day. Nelson, Garreau, Crichton, and Pilmer all have their own versions of why environmentalism is or is not a religion, but with some stipulations. Environmentalism is a religion in a sense of what religion is defined as, in different cultures. It can be symbolic, based on belief or experiences. In my opinion I agree with the authors on Environmentalism being a religion. Most see it as something to consume them or some see it as something that just is. This is a very confusing topic to discuss, because it can go either way. Lastly when it comes to the United States seeing it as a religion I feel they are slowly becoming consumed by environmentalism in small areas, but we are mainly in our “own religions”, we only care for what it can do for and with us. We as a society are always looking for something bigger and better, and not really looking at the main concepts and the underlying root of ourselves that religion, or culture shows us every
Environmentalist want to protect Rainforest. Environmentalist need to protect the forest so this earth can have clean oxygen.
(Harris, 2000: 5) This is the kind of development that will advance us and help us live healthy, better, rich lives without posing a threat on the environment or posterity to depend on the environment for life. Furthermore, protecting the environment means that the species residing in the different habitats of the environment are automatically set out of danger and protected as well.
Green Guilt” essay by Asma Stephen is all about saving the nature and its relationship with religion. I agree with his thought about religion, and how it affects our morality towards environment. Now a days people are so serious about saving the planet. Here writer gives the example of his own 6 years old son who behave rudely to her because the miss use of water and light . Similarly, a friend confessed that he didn’t recycle really, suddenly he became a pariah. It show people’s seriousness about saving the planet. There are indeed environmental challenges, and steps must be taken to ameliorate them.
Environmental issues have been a cause of a lot of debate in the recent past. Governments and nongovernmental organizations have been in constant consultations on how to help protect the environment. Apparently, as a result of man’s many actions, the natural environment is getting torn apart so quickly that the coming generations will not enjoy this kind of environment, unless a
These perspectives are anthropocentric or human centered and view all non-human life as less important than humans themselves. Environmental ethics challenges these beliefs by questioning the assumed moral superiority of human beings to members of other species on earth (SEP, 2008). Preservation of the environment is essential to the preservation of the human race.
Environmental problems are something which belongs to nature or known as “Mother Earth” [13]. Nature was created to help people survive from gathering foods until build a house. This phenomenon happens continuously without thinking how much damage that nature has because human’s fault. Nature gradually becomes worse and animal’s life in danger. People who are aware of the importance of nature react. Those people do several ways to save the environment. Although these efforts can return back the environment, these efforts only can be hold temporarily. This problem happens because those people who are aware of the environment only slightly; for remaining, there are people either do not know or do not care about the nature. People’s efforts
