My group and I decided to work with the education policy on the common core state standards. The main purpose was to have high school graduates be ready for college and/or career. The common core was implemented because of the challenges that high school graduates were facing once they were out of high school and into college and noticed that they weren’t ready. The common core has benefited some students, but it has also failed others. I will go over the history, implementations, effectiveness, and my personal suggestions on this topic.

These standards are starting in the early grade levels and are essentially given the teachers time to teach them what is needed to achieve the goal and master the standards that are being implemented for them. Although this is being implemented at schools the main goal is to have not only the student, but also the parent and the teacher all be on the same page to help prepare the student to successfully achieve the goals so that every year they continue to advance and be able to graduate high school and go to college. Although there is a plan of action to achieve college career readiness after high school teachers don’t have a set of defined standards on how to teach or what materials to use to help accomplish these goals. These goals are also being implemented to those with special needs and English language learners. So this is what is expected from the students for the (ELA) English Language Arts Standards: The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what
The goal of the Common Core State Standards is to prepare students for college and work expectations and help them compete and succeed in a global economy and society. Furthermore, this policy has shaped current educational thinking by providing established learning standards with rigorous content and application of higher knowledge through higher order thinking skills.
According to the National Education Association (2017) The common core state standards benefit all students because it provides equal access to the same curriculum as other students across the nation. The standards focus specifically on English Language Arts and Mathematics. The Common Core is designed to encompass a clear set of broad standards to prepare students for post-secondary opportunities. The standards were meant to be more challenging than current set of standards in each state and to provide clarity and consistency about what was expected of students at each grade level.
Adopted by forty-two out states in 2010, the Common Core State Standard Initiative strives to provide an educational structure which details what English language arts and mathematics should be taught from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The initiative is the federal government’s attempt to ensure all students who graduate from high school are adequately prepared to enter a two or four year college or the workforce. Despite their intentions, the Common Core has caused much controversy in the education community. The thought behind Common Core is very valid and has the potential to help students, however changes must be made to unrealistic standards and wordy statements. Common Core must first be rewritten so that the language is clear and can be easily understood by the general public. Next ask experts on childhood development and elementary school teachers to review the standards and rewrite standards they see as unneeded or irrelevant as well as unrealistic.
The main goal of both No Child Left Behind and the Common Core State Standards are to have students perform better primary in Language Arts and Mathematics, though the Common Core State Standards does branch out into other subjects, like Science. With No Child Left Behind, there is a focus on testing on Language Arts and Mathematics and schools that do not improve would face sanctions. With the Common Core State Standards, there is still a focus on testing primary in Language Arts and Mathematics and a very detailed map on how to teach the subjects, there is also some guidance in teaching other subjects, like Science. The Common Core State Standards are considered to be a high-quality group of academic standards. Before the standards were developed, it seemed as if the progress of the students in the United States was remaining stagnant and that America students were falling behind their international peers. The blame for this setback has fallen on the fact that standards are not consistent and from state-to-state students are required to know different things at different grade levels. As a result students are not graduating with the same set of skills (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2014).
Common Core State Standards is being heard throughout the education world. Many cringe when the words are spoken and many fight to support what the words stand for. Common Core was introduced in 2009 by state leaders. Politics and education have been intertwined since the establishment of public education in the United States. In other words, it is a well-known fact that public education is an extension of our political system. This has never been more apparent to the public than over the last three decades, beginning in 1983 with “A Nation at Risk” which is considered a significant event in modern American educational history. For the last few years, it has been the controversial topic of the Common Core State Standards Initiative in the headlines. One can hardly turn on the news or read a newspaper or web site without hearing something about Common Core State Standards (CCCS). People either seem to be adamantly for or against the standards. Educational reform and educational standards are not new and date back much further than many people realize. Furthermore, if the public understood what the standards actually encompass, there may be more support for Common Core State Standards. However, the public is being inundated with a multitude of reasons why states should not adopt Common Core by making it a political issue in order to gain votes. Regardless of what standards are adopted, common standards in education should be implemented in the United States to prepare students for college and career in order to compete and succeed in a global economy.

But if you listen carefully to the conversations, the main concern is not about the standards, themselves, but about the consequences of high-stakes tests attached to the standards. The Common Core State Standards are a state attempt to create strong educational standards. The standard are created to ensure that students in the country are learning and grasping the information that are given in the classrooms for them to succeed academically. The Common Core plan included governors and education commissioners form forty-eight states and the District of Columbia. They wanted to make sure the standards are relevant, logical and sequential. For content all subjects must have critical-thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Some positive aspects of this policy is that it prepares our students for a competitive global jobs. It can provide national connections in education. Designed to shape the best standards so that all states will be taking a step ahead in education. These standards had been created after extensive research by professional educators for excellence in education. The CCS focus on what students expectations of learning, and achievements. Educators do not need to worry that the standards will make their jobs look redundant because they are in charge of creating lessons to teach their students the content and skills that the CCS demands. The teachers do not feel that the standards are one-size-fits-all. Some negative aspects of the policy are that is a program created by solely the government. It is therefore up to the teacher to find ways of intervention to teach and cater to those students needs. because the standards do not regard the students it is setting a tone for it to be highly unlikely that teachers will seek to support these students. the implications of literacy means that the literacy requirement is once again not black and white, different students may or may not met all the standards and they will likely not reach them at the same time. thus i feel that the definition of literacy should reflect that and isn't so clearly defined or can be clearly evaluated because of this. it also means that the these students will need different ways or additional resources when learning and may have to showcase mastery in a different way. it goes to show that literacy is subjective. this definition indicated that all student need to be literate by mastering these specific things and that includes english language learners. it offers no guidance for educators of diverse learners. it's a one size fits all kind of policy that leaves these students out. are there alternative testing options?how do the standards play out in the curriculum would more clearly depict the implications. if you need to learn all these things to be successful as the next grade then most likely

In the United States education has always been a contested issue. In 2009, state leaders in forty-eight states launched the Common Core standard and currently forty-three states are working to implement the system. The Common Core’s main purpose was to prepare American students for success and to create an even playing field for all students. But is the Common Core really helping students reach their potential?
“Students in the United States have scored far below other countries on international assessments” (Dana, Burns, & Wolkenhauer pg.4). The Common Core State Standards will help students in the United States achieve in their assessments and establish a clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should understand and be capable of accomplishing in math and English language arts. As stated in the book, “developing, implementing, assessing, and redeveloping, reimplementing, and reassessing in their own set of state standards” (Dana, Burns, & Wolkenhauer, pg.4). Working at an elementary school every teacher that I work with implements the Common Core State Standards every day. I love how my kindergarten teachers implement CCSS when doing English language arts because they talk about different topics and texts, and the students are participating in collaborative conversations with the other students in the
For decades educational reform has been a top priority in the United States. For years, federal and state governments have been working together on legislation that would improve education standards. Many systems have been created in that time period with President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind (NCLB) being one of the most recent reforms. NCLB seemed insufficient over time and led to the most recent reform in education, Common Core Standards that were released in 2010 by state governors and superintendents. Since its origination, Common Core Standards have been a controversial implementation across the nation.
