Throughout my life, I have always loved to read, yet I have never read stories like the ones we have been studying during this course. Although I have always loved reading, I never took the time to truly appreciate all the wonders of the literature world. Out of all the authors and stories we studied, I knew the most about Edgar Allan Poe. Poe’s stories have always sparked an interest in me since there is always room for different interpretations of his accounts. In the duration of this course, I was more informed on how English literature was started. I became more educated on how the styles and tones the authors utilize have an affect on the readers. Although I had already read many of the stories we studied, I became more enlightened on the background history of the authors of those stories. Even though I’ve always enjoyed reading Edgar Allan Poe’s stories this course has helped me have a new gratitude for his books. Studying Poe’s personal background has given me a new insight on why his stories have always been so morbid. Learning more of Poe’s history allows me to connect the influence of the hardships he had to endure to his own writings. I’ve always noted symbolism in Poe’s accounts but now that I have a deeper knowledge of his background I understand the background of his narrations more. In the future, I would like to be able to study literature from different countries so that I can compare them to English literature. Studying the differences between two different sets of literature would give me a more expanded knowledge on written accounts. The 19th century American poet, Edgar Allan Poe, had been plagued by grief from an early age. He was an amazing poet and author who just happened to have a darker story. Many who have studied this prestigious man feel that his works, though magnificent, were extremely dark. Some believe it was nothing more then a fancy for him to spin such gruesome tales. Others feel his work was manipulated by the misfortune of his past. These people have actually found evidence that agrees with this statement. The works of Edgar Allan Poe were inspired by the history and life style of the author. The evidence is evident, when people look back and examine the author, his life, and his writings closely.

Edgar Allan Poe was well known for his dark stories such as, “The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart.” His stories and poems focused mainly on death and the sinister side of a man’s mind. In general, many of his main characters were not mentally stable or were dealing with alcohol abuse. Poe’s life never seemed to offer him a break, he lived hardships after hardships. Nevertheless, his pain and problems contributed to numerous of his writings and poems. The reader is able to see the connections between his life and the characters. “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” although have many similarities in style, also have many differences.

Edgar Allan Poe’s life was one of many sorrows and difficulties, filled with deaths of close family and many broken loves. Men disappointed him throughout the entirety of his life, and he saw women as angels that had come to redeem him from the depths of his depression and alcoholism. These occurrences, along with many others, especially those of his childhood, led Poe to become one of the greatest authors of his time. He is called “the father of horror and mystery”, as well as the father of science fiction (Wilson Par. 4).

Edgar Allan Poe was born January 9th ,1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He experienced death at a very early age. By the time he was three both of his parents were dead. He then got placed with foster parents John and Frances Allan. John Allan was a very wealthy man and sent Edgar to all the best boarding schools. After finishing school Edgar attended the University of Virginia. He was great in school, but unfortunately, he had to leave due to his many gambling debts. He then enlisted in the United States Army under the name Edgar A. Perry, in 1827. He did well in pretty much everything he attempted including the Army. He eventually became sergeant major.
