The Industrial Revolution was a time in American history when people started to work with machines and in factories at their jobs. There were many astounding and horrible things that came with it though. Overall, I believe that the Industrial Revolution had a negative impact because it brought child labor, poor living conditions, and accidents/ injuries on the world. One reason why the Industrial Revolution had a negative impact on the world is because it started child labor. Child labor is when businesses and industries take kids from any age and make them work in dangerous and inhumane places. In the document from a British industrial worker, the Sadler Committee in 1832 investigated the workers’ conditions in British factories. It says, “ ‘... When did you first begin to work in the mills? When I was ten years of age … we began at five in the morning and stopped at nine at night … at times we were frequently strapped [whipped].’ ”. This statement from the document shows a negative impact in the Industrial Revolution because kids at young age are sent to work for long hours and are frequently whipped. …show more content…
These big machines in the factories can and are very dangerous. In a document from an industrial worker, Joseph Hebergam who also testified before the Sadler Committee in 1832, says, “ ‘... nature of your illness? I have damaged lungs. My leg muscle do not function … causes of your illness? … caused by dust in the factories and from overwork … brother’s death … ? He was cut by a machine and died of infection.’”. This statement from the document shows a negative impact in the Industrial Revolution because it shows that workers get sick and die from working around these dangerous
The Industrial Revolution had positive outcomes of more jobs, but these new jobs brought some positives but many more negatives for the people. Child labor today is not as bad as the issue was centuries ago, but it still affects millions of children all over the world. The use of children in the work force was like putting a newborn rat in a maze and trying to make it find its own way
However the industrial revolution was not all good. The working class had no other option but to turn up at the factories for work. The factory system resulted in over-crowding and unhygienic conditions and also the development of slum areas. Many factory owners who needed cheap, unskilled labour, profited greatly by using children and women to run the machines and because they were small and could fit in tunnels as well not only that they were more suited for factory life because they could adopt more quickly and easily than men. By the age of 6, many children were already working twelve hours a day in factories. These children had no free time to do anything plus they earned low wages. Hardly any of the children went to school they had to work in factories to earn money. Quite a lot of the people who worked at factories got sick and died because of the toxic fumes in the factories. While others were severely injured because the machines didn't have safety guards so many children got killed by machinery when they fell asleep and got caught up in the machines. Many of the children who were orphans, hired by the employers would

The Industrial Revolution was a positive time in history. Throughout this time period because or three main reasons innovation; they invented many things we use today and things that changed how we lived. Second, the growth in population this incorporated for families to make more money and companies to rise up. Finally, the revolution made the standard of life so much better. People were able to travel and live in comfort
The use of children sped up production and made the pool of employees much larger. The benefit of child labor for the workers being able to have more people in the factory. The disadvantage was the fact that children are young and should be spending their time learning and playing opposed to operating machines for 16 hours and never attending school (Document 1). Some communities made child labor an option and enforced education at the same time. These communities were known as working societies. They focused on making nice conditions for children that worked. They took good care of kids and paid them in exchange for work. Safety was a big concern so death rates were very low (Document 5). However, not all companies treated their kids well. Some factories abused child labor, allowing kids as young as three years old to help out (Document 9). Politicians are managers claimed that the kids were just fine and even benefited from working. “I have visited many factories, and I never saw a single instance of corporal chastisement inflicted on a child. They seemed to be always cheerful and alert” (Document 4). Child labor was a debatable topic during the Industrial Revolution because many people depended on it but many other people wanted it to stop because it was
The Industrial Revolution persuaded many people to urbanize or move to the cities. However, many of those people were forced to pack into tenements and work in dangerous, mindless, and unvarying factories. People who worked in factories, worked long hours in unsafe atmospheres and did not get paid well or fairly. They also suffered from lifelong illnesses. In Document 13, an excerpt from Joseph Hebergam’s testimony to the Sadler Committee is shown. In his testimony, Hebergam states, “I have damaged lungs. My leg muscles do not function properly and will not support the weight of my bones…[the doctor] told me that [my
After the Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 1700s, and it raised the standard of living across the globe. However, while some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of advanced economic growth, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrializations negative effects were working conditions, living conditions, and child labor. Though the Industrial Revolution led to new creations such, as the steam engine and the railroads, in order to produce these machines it requires a great deal of labor.
The Industrial Revolution had many long-lasting effects on the English economy and society in the 1800s; the effects being both positive and negative. England’s industrialization resulted in urbanization, improved production, and better transportation, but also in poor living and working conditions for the working class, including many children. Industrialization in England made production of goods much more convenient, creating a greater demand for unskilled labor and a rapidly growing population. The population increase meant that more food was needed in order to feed everyone. In Document 5, Michael Mandelbaum explains that some rural labor was made “redundant,” causing many people to move to urban cities where they could find work in the new factories.
As time progressed society in England changed but the biggest change was caused by the industrial revolution. Society did change for the better but had many bad side effect along with it. A good thing that came from the industrial revolution was the upgrade of tools. With the Industrial revolution came many great inventions that people today rely heavily on. Inventions such as cars, planes, and tools. These changes also helped with the progression of house building, making it easier for people to design and build sturdy homes that can withstand nature. This helped us get to where we are today with all the technological advancements. But this all came at a cost. Along with the factories producing this we had people working there. These people were treated very badly with their work environment and pay. There was no minimum wage back then making it hard for people to continue living. And if u didnt die from starvation or overworking you would die from how dangerous the factories are. All day breathing in smoke and having the risk of getting stuck in a machine. And even if u did survive getting injured you would surely die of infection because they can pay for health care on how low their salary. These changes impacted in world we know today in both positive and
The Industrial Revolution began in England because they had the best natural resources, they had a geographic advantage and they made changes in their agriculture.
An important negative social effect of the Industrial Revolution can be found in Document # 1. The document was created by Dr Michael Ward who was a medical doctor from Manchester. This document was for the British parliament committee in London, March 25th, 1819. The document explains how children who worked at the textile mills had serious injuries from hands and arms getting stuck in the machines. Half of the children at the lever school worked and half of those children were injured. As a doctor, Dr Michael Ward wanted to make sure people were taken care of and was concerned about the child workers he has treated. This example shows the social effects of the Industrial Revolution were negative because children were getting injured. Another important negative social effect of the Industrial Revolution can be found in Document # 3. The document was created by William Cooper and Joseph Heloergam who were former workers for the Sadler Committee
The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to the world, many of them being life-changing. It was an important time period that made very big transitions in manufacturing. The Industrial Revolution took place in the years of 1760 to about 1830. The changes it brought were both good and bad.
Mass production played a big role in the Industrial Revolution and its working conditions. The Industrial Revolution was a time of progress in terms of new machines and technology being used in manufacturing products. With a stronger demand for all kinds of products there was an even bigger demand for a larger workforce, which also varied in gender and age. Child labor was fairly common during this period; children were hired to perform some of the tasks the adults were unable to perform. Such as working in mines that involved small crawl areas or in textile factories where their small fingers could fix broken threads. Working conditions were not only harsh on children, but also for the adults. As a result of mass production, people often worked long hours with almost no rest. Consequently, these long working hours lead to accidents,
The Industrial Revolution had many positive aspects. It gave people more hope for things. New inventions and much more was on the rising. Factories had made a positive impact on the Industrial Revolution. It made producing products a lot easier, faster and simpler. Mass production is the reason why we have so many of the same product, making thousands of the same items in a short amount of time. The people were able to get clothes quicker instead of sewing cloths themselves, which was more expensive. The Industrial Revolution also caused retail prices to go down. Before the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing was regularly done was regularly done in homes. More jobs were available to the society, which meant more work and money. Improvements for transportation got easier for people to get around different cities. Since traveling
Despite goods being made easily and quickly in factories, there were many negatives brought along with this that tainted the image of the Industrial Revolution. As stated in document 2 the condition of these factories were poor. Employees had to work in cluttered, unsanitary conditions for long hours. Despite working for around 15+ hours per day, workers were paid inadequately. This caused parents to have their children work in these unsanitary factories and mines to help support the family. This caused for them to be “delicate” and “sickly”, but since more income was coming in, parents around Europe has more kids
