Although I am middle-aged, I have never traveled outside of the United States nor have I had the privilege to experience a wide diversity of cultures. Other than research or articles that I have read throughout my life, I have little knowledge pertaining to other cultures. However, through my former employment and my daughter, I have some experience and knowledge of the Hispanic families that relocated to our area. Approximately 18 years ago, there were many Hispanic families that relocated to the area and enrolled in the school system in which I worked. Seeking employment and a better way of life, these fathers brought their families and have had other children during this time period as well. From kindergarten until the present day, …show more content…
Occurring when a Hispanic girl reaches the age of fifteen, this celebration symbolizes the girl reaching the age of maturity and becoming a woman (Barbezat, 2017). For each of the celebrations, the Hispanic girls were attired in extravagant ballgowns and they were transported to the church with several male escorts and later to the party venue via limousines. Beginning with mass, this is a time of thankfulness by the parents and godparents, for the young lady reaching this mature age (Barbezat, 2017). Following the mass celebration, guests went to the party venue for dinner and dancing. Because this is a very extravagant affair, I can think of nothing to compare it to in the American culture. As I have read of a debutante ball, perhaps that is the closest that would resemble a quinceanera celebration. Each of the girls selected a group of their closest male and female friends to perform a choreographed dance at the celebration. My daughter actually danced in two of the three celebrations that we attended. The symbolism of other aspects of the quinceanera is that the young lady receives a doll that stands for the last doll of her childhood that she will pass to a younger sibling or family member (Barbezat, 2017). In addition, flowers are presented to symbolize her first bouquet as a young woman (Barbezat, 2017). Other extravagant gifts are usually given as
The presence of Latinos in the United States challenges the notion of there being only one specific type of American citizen, an English-speaking person who lives only in relation to an "Anglo" heritage. Alongside other minority groups, Latinos tend to believe in the notion that the United States must be made up of one bounded territory, within which people speak a singular language and experience one culture. So, when the Anglo groups are faced with Spanish speaking people who are in touch with their Latino heritage, they feel threatened by the people who can speak both Spanish and English. The response to this sense of threat involves marginalization and the obvious exclusion of Latino groups in the United States. At the
The United States population continues to increase in racial and ethnic diversity, therefore, it is pertinent that mental health professionals tailor their services to the needs of various cultural populations (Constantine, Kindaichi, Arorash, Donnelly, & Jung, 2002). The awareness that ethnic minorities experience negative consequences from being oppressed, resulted in the multicultural competence pedagogy and has helped counselors identify effective strategies to generate social change (Hage, 2003; Vera & Speight, 2003). Social norms that cause these injustices are identified, allowing for ethnic minorities to constitute and embrace empowerment. Moreover, this consciousness helps prevent therapists own bias’ from playing
The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The world is full of different people and ethnicity, race, creative individuals. Each race has issues to deal with rather it be prejudice and racism. Also during my time in this course I have learned a great deal about myself and I learned how to show more respect to other cultures, I already understood some of the cultures and races we studied this course but to get a better understanding and having to additional research really gave me an open mind and point of view what everyone deals with.
Year after year, the various departments and agencies of the United States Federal Government are becoming more diverse. The discussion of workplace diversity is not a discussion that is likely to disappear anytime soon in the future. To explain, the literature from Starks (2009) notes that by the year of 2050, minorities groups will account for fifty-percent of the population, in the United States of America. As a result, the discussion of diversity in the workplace is likely to still be a constant topic, for the various department and agencies of the United States Federal Government.
Jeremy, I enjoyed reading your discussion piece and found myself agreeing with your perspective. I too fell as though society is commonly uninformed when it comes to other religions. One of my favorite quotes comes from Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992) who stated that the most dangerous phrase in the language is “We’ve always done it this way”. I truly believe that education is the key to many aspects of life, including religion.
As I was started reading this chapter I was very much unaware that, the inhabitants of the Artic often are called Eskimo. Arctic people are sectioned into 4 categories: the Unangan, The Yup’ik, the Inupiaq, and the Inuit. The Unangan populate the Aleutian island, the Yup’ik dwell in southern and central Alaska, the Inupiaq in northern Alaska, and the Inuit live in the rest of the North American Arctic. Everybody has their own particular tribe ceremonies and social generally the same numbers of us in the United States are assorted, the straightforward purpose behind being various is the thing that causes the adjustment in the practices. Despite the fact that they are from the same tribe they have diverse viewpoints to a large portion of the stuff. From the language to how they hunt and what they hunt to their living style.
As a citizen of the United States our country consist of cultural diversity in the workplace, church, schools, and etc. It is very unique because people get the chance to meet other people learn interesting things such as food, beliefs, and their country. For instance, as a student there has been much insight learning various information on religions and their beliefs. Even if a person is a Christian and the other person is Buddhism, there should be an open mind to learn about a different religion, but not practicing unless a person is willing to do so. Having a diversity culture gives the opportunity for people to communicate and interact with one another, and also the chance to accept people’s nationality rather than discriminated. “A nation’s
I hail from the hearth of cultural diversity in the United States of America, New York City. Therefore it wouldn't be a surprise that all of my conscious life, I've been surrounded by different cultures, backgrounds, and views divergent from my own. Even though the sheer fact that my hometown displays an ability to thrive in a vibrant community, I don't believe that speaking about it alone would be sufficient enough to express why I would be able to fit into a vibrant community analogous to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Rutgers University.
Cultural diversity is the understanding that within a given society, there are many cultures and backgrounds being represented in that society. Diversity can be represented by the different languages being spoken natively or by racial and ethnic orientation. The diversity of cultures is what allows for an exchange of ideas, goods and values from one culture to another. Such diversities within cultures can only exist if they are maintained and are seen as equally as important as any other. Cultural diversity is also ever changing the landscape of the United States as we are welcoming more immigrants.
With so much cultural diversity in the United States, it is important to know how to properly communicate with others who don't share the same cultures as you. There are certain principles of cross-cultural communication; they can be used to successfully communicate within diverse communities. The first principle says that the bigger the cultural or linguistic difference among people, the more likely there will be communication breakdown. The textbook gives the example "Communicating with customers from Iran will likely lead to more communication difficulties for you than would be true if you were communicating with customers from England" (Cheesebro, Thomas, Linda O'Connor, and Francisco Rios (2010). Differences in an individual's value
It is in our nations’ interest to invest in America’s future employees. By 2050, the U.S. populace is predicted to escalate by 50 percent, and minority groups will make up nearly half the population. Immigration will account for almost two-thirds of the nation’s population development. The population of mature Americans is anticipated to increase more than twofold. One-quarter of all Americans will be of Hispanic origin. Nearly one in ten Americans will be of Asian or Pacific Islander descent. And more female and people with infirmities will be on the job (Office of the Secretary, n.d., Gray, n.d.). There are innumerable ways in which individuals have been defined. Classifications of the term diversity range from narrow to
Throughout the United States, cultural diversity is increasing each day. Cultural diversity consists of the traditions, beliefs, values, languages, customs, and other various factors that identifies with individuals, as well as the groups they belong to. When it comes to conceptualizing cultural diversity, there are three different models that were used historically when it comes to “dealing with” cultural diversity. These three models include assimilation, pluralism, and multiculturalism.
These people need to know they are not alone, and there are resources available for them. Due to culture and language diversity in large number of immigrants, the workshops will have interpreters during the sessions. The focus points of each workshop are mainly sharing information and resources, solving problems, managing stress, balancing work and home, building skills, and developing network. All the people in this community have different struggles and challenges. So, I created four workshops and each focus on single mothers, community living, caregiver parents, and parenting
In the health care you have to think of all the cultural diversity in the United States. Some cultures are Hinduism, Jehovah's Witness, and Mormons etc.there are many different cultures. Every culture varies in religion, beliefs of medical treatment, and various traditions.
I think if the U.S. had a more ethnically sensitive society that no one would would follow religion or tradition anymore. Some struggles with U.S. becoming more ethically sensitive are acceptance, speech patterns, and following tradition. There are some good points about our nation being culturally diverse such as…. Being exposed to other cultures, shown different lifestyles, and meeting new people.
