In order for us to evaluate what people’s opinions of their consoles were, we decided to evaluate the most recent video game consoles that released only three years ago. As a result, we choose to use Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. Launching just one week apart from each other in November 2013, the Xbox one and PS4 gave birth to the eighth generation of video consoles. Each console sold millions within their first few weeks on the market. At the end of 2013, Sony’s PlayStation 4 had been sold to over 4.2 million people worldwide (2), were as Microsoft’s Xbox One had only been sold to 3 million people worldwide (1). Games have also become easily accessible on smart phones, following the trend of portability. The most important thing to note when comparing Xbox and Nintendo is the difference between the companies. Xbox is owned by Microsoft, a tech giant with many different business segments, whereas Nintendo is a company that is purely dedicated to gaming. Because of this, Nintendo can dedicate all of its time, money, and efforts to game consoles. An example that shows this discrepancy is in the research and development expenses of each company. Xbox spent $12 billion on research and development in 2015, whereas Nintendo only spent $527 million. This is not a completely accurate way to compare the companies, as Microsoft has far more money than Nintendo due to the fact that it has so many business segments. The Xbox One is on the cutting edge of gaming technology and is only compared to the only other system released during the holiday season of 2013, the Playstation 4. Microsoft is one of three companies that currently dominate the console hardware market. These three companies are Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. The Microsoft Xbox One controls about 29% of the market share, while Sony PlayStation 4 controls 51%, and Nintendo Wii 20% (Duran 2015). With technology changing everyday, increased competition, and similarity in hardware products, there is a high level of urgency for Microsoft to come up with an innovation strategy that will enable the company to surpass its competitors. For the video game industry many threats exist including no strong regulations against piracy by illegal manufacturers, high costs of improving technology, the stiff competition within the industry, and the rise in popularity of substitute products. Amidst the threats, there are certainly beneficial opportunities for Microsoft to approach going forward. These opportunities would include online markets, expanding internationally, as well as new technology possibly in the form of virtual reality video games. Going forward Microsoft should invest its scarce resources and time through creating new technology, as best as possible. The industry that I have chosen to analyse within this essay is Games Consoles; this particular industry was chosen because I have a personal interest and knowledge of the market, which I believe, will help me towards analysing it. The Games consoles industry includes both static and portable consoles, static consoles being devices which are played through a television as opposed to portable devices which can be played on phones and tablets. According to (Mintel 2014) there is currently a 'big three ' who dominate the static games consoles - Xbox, PlayStation and Wii. All three of these games consoles are owned by separate companies. Xbox is developed by Microsoft, PlayStation developed by Sony and Wii developed by Nintendo. Currently within the market there are two consoles for each of Xbox and PlayStation, as 2014 sees the first year that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have been on sale since it was released in November 2013. These join the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles which have now been on the market for many years. In the diagram below on the left from (Mintel 2014) by VGChartz we can see it illustrates that the big three currently control 100% of the static console industry with Xbox having a market share of 44%, PlayStation 47% and Wii 9%. The battle of the best console has been in full force since Microsoft and Sony created the Xbox and PlayStation. They have caused controversy among gamers for numerous years. The majority of articles state, "PS4 has been more popular compared to Xbox" (Feria). People like to argue which is better, but when choosing it is mostly a matter of opinion. Most gamers do not look at the statistics. The PlayStation 4 has continually outsold the Xbox One since their release (Elise). When researching, one can infer that the PlayStation 4 is a better choice than the Xbox One.

Based on news reported on IGN.COM on November 2014, sales data revealed that PS4 holds the position of the number one selling console in Australia, outselling competitors such as Microsoft Xbox One and Nintendo Wii twofold. The consoles have a 60% market value shares and contributed 47% growth in retail sales for interactive home entertainment. Globally PS4 sales have surpassed 10 million units. The PS4’s success is due to its mobile device connectivity, immediacy of connection and social media sharing (Pitcher 2015).
