Thesis: Though the primary purpose of the Prohibition was to prevent harmful effects caused by alcohol and improve the condition of society, many unexpected adverse effects followed. Thus, when the nation legislates the law which regulates something addictive or harmful, it is necessary to be cautious and examine it carefully before executing it, for the situation can get worse and turn into catastrophe.

Prohibition began with the ratification of the 18th amendment stating,”…the manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors…for beverage purpose is hereby prohibited.”(Constitution). In fact the Prohibition Act was effective in reducing the amount of alcohol consumed by the public; it, however, trigger an up-roar of organized criminal activity like the Mafia during the Prohibition movement.

The National Prohibition Act, also known as the Volstead Act, was passed as the 18th amendment on October 28, 1919. The act prohibited alcoholic beverages with an alcohol level of greater than 0.5%. It also regulated the manufacture, production, use, and sale of alcohol.1 The Volstead Act was pushed for by many religious groups who believed alcohol was evil and detrimental to society. The intent of the Volstead Act was to decrease crime and corruption, boost the economy, and improve the health of the American people. Instead, it ultimately resulted in an increase in organized crime and corruption, the economy plummeted, and the rate of alcohol consumption grew rapidly. This is why I believe the Volstead Act was pointless and should never have been passed. It took over a decade for congress to realize their mistake and the Eighteenth Amendment was not repealed until December 5, 1933.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant or to the bowling alley and come home smelling like cigarette smoke? And while you were there, some people are sitting there smoking by you and you can’t stand the smell of it. So you go out side and to get some fresh air and what do you know there’s some more people lighting it up and smoking but they are polite enough to go outside. Doesn’t this annoy you, that you can barely go anywhere without people smoking in your presence. This leads us to the question, Should smoking in public areas be allowed? This issue is often just thrown off to the side of the many politicians, but this issue is a major issue that needs to be dealt with immediately. There are 18 year olds risking their lives on the blood drenched war zones. They are fighting and risking their lives to give us the right to drink, and they cannot legally even enjoy an alcoholic beverage. This is a major problem we as Americans need to fix. During the prohibition beer sales rose seven hundred percent more than before (“Prohibition”). Many people wanted to have a prohibition, but many people also did not want to have it. Many people nowadays think that the prohibition was not needed; to some groups though they thought that alcohol created crime, illness, and bad morals for men. During the time of the prohibition, the ban of alcohol was expected to be a huge success for the United States. Alcohol ban was set to decrease crime rate and create a better civilization, but the opposite happened. The United States crime rate only increased as people protested and went against the ban of alcohol. Things began to get out of hand, protestors lined the street and began rioting. Violence began breaking out and people also lost jobs due to the ban.

In order to discuss prohibition, the definition of it needs to be outlined and it is the act of prohibition is the act of making alcohol, illegal so that people cannot legally obtain it to any degree, thus theoretically preventing people from even being able to access the thing that is so crucial to drunk driving. Interestingly, when considering prohibition as a tactic to prevent drunk driving or alcohol abuse in general, it is important to recall that in the early 20th century, the U.S. tried to do this on a national scale and in reality, it can only be described as a failure to the largest degree considering that it did not make the alcohol situation any better and in many cases made it worse as people turned to illegal, unregulated alcohol

There is also to be no smoking in the workplace. “All restaurants are totally non-smoking [unless they] have a designated smoking room”. “The Oklahoma Smoking in Public Places and Indoor Workplaces Act also prohibits smoking in vehicles providing public transportation, or is owned by the state.” “Childcare facilities and educational facilities are also included in no-smoking ban area. Smoking in restaurants and bars has recently become a thing of the past in Georgia. Most restaurants used to have smoking sections. These poorly partitioned areas allowed patrons and employees to enjoy the carefree life of eating and smoking simultaneously, without having to go outside for a smoke break. Fortunately, the Georgia Smokefree Air Act of 2005 made it illegal for smokers to light up inside restaurants where anyone under the age of eighteen may be present. Now, non-smokers can go into practically any eating place in the state and not have to worry about their food being seasoned with the cook’s cigarette ash.
