The characteristics of the characters in a story are something that makes them who they are and what you start to learn about them. In The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty, the protagonist shoots and kills the antagonist. The two characters in the story are, the protagonist which was the narrator (main sniper) and the antagonist (enemy sniper). The protagonist saves the lives of others because of his his intelligence, his determination, and his risk-taking.
The narrator’s intelligence is one of his most important and most noticeable traits. Intelligence is something that happens in almost every scene in the story. The imagination in your mind will let you see how it goes out and turns into better. The narrator chose to smoke a cigarette and he lit a flame and got shot.”Draping flat onto the roof, he crawled back to the parapet with his left hand he felt insured. He drew his knife to fix the wound.”(213). Here, the narrator, after getting shot, crawls back acting like there is no pain at all leans up against the parapet (wall on a roof) and gets his knife and cuts his sleeve off to see the wound and get the bullet out. After he got the bullet out and rapped his cut sleeve around his arm to slow down the bleeding. The narrator, after getting shot, he came up with a very good idea.”Taking off his cap, he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle. Then pushed his rifle slowly over the parapet until the cap was visible.”(214). Here, the narrator got shot and he wanted to see if the enemy
Characterization is shown through indirect and direct stories. Indirect is when the author does not go straight out and tell the reader characteristics, but direct is a five letter acronym known as S.T.E.A.L. These individual letters stand for say, think, effect, actions, and look. Say stands for what the character says throughout the story, think is what the character imagines or says in his or her mind that only the reader and the narrator know, effect stands for what effect the characters' actions play with others within the story, actions stands for what the character physically does within the story, and look is what the characters physical features are and how they develop characterization. Sandra Cisneros develops great characterization throughout both
Through literature, Liam O’Flaherty, the author of the short story The Sniper, clearly illustrates how horrific and destructive war really is. He illustrates the appalling agony of the Irish civil war through a dramatic story of two brothers against each other in the war. Through the the author's writing, readers can conclude that the theme of The Sniper is that war destroys families. O’Flaherty sets emphasis on this theme by using many strong literary devices. The literary devices used that apply the most emphasis on the theme are situational irony, setting, and the author's use of direct characterization .

A character trait is the aspect of a person's behavior and attitudes that make up their personality. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is known to have strong characterization. One of the most important characters is Atticus Finch, a highly respected lawyer in Macomb County and a father to Jem and Scout Finch. Two major character traits Atticus truly represents is compassion and understanding.
When an author writes a story, one will introduce, analyze, and describe a character in a way that pertains to his or her personal style. Often times, a character’s personal attributes and distinctive qualities are represented at the beginning of the plot line. O’Brien’s use of characterization especially that of Jimmy Cross, forces the reader to analyze the text in depth, so that many other observations can be made. Characterization is an important part of this passage because it forces the reader to critically think about the struggles that these men are facing. This is important because it truly depicts the mindset of the soldiers during war.
mind of a reader the character they relate with most is what makes the story interesting to read. We both stand up for what is right, we both have a calm temper until someone tries to infringe on our values, finally we both believe that what the right thing to do isn't always what should be done.
The sniper is undoubtedly a dynamic character. The author displays this through the plot, the sniper’s thoughts, and even states it directly. Liam O’ Flaherty wrote of the sniper being overwhelmed with penitence after defeating his opposition. In the story, the author directly stated how the sniper’s feelings had changed. Liam O’ Flaherty did this again when he wrote about the sniper feeling reckless after drinking from the whiskey flask.
The narrator also has many decisions that would affect him. His first and most important one comes with his encounter with the artilleryman. The first encounter is when the narrator is hiding at his house after returning the horse carriage. He then hears a knock on the door, he chooses to open this door which then reveals the artilleryman. This gives the narrator a companion and the helpful expertise and survive fulness that the soldier brings with him.
The narrator denies the accusations that he is mentally unstable, and begins to tell a tale to prove his sanity. The narrator remember his experience by being inspired to kill the old man who was living with him. One night, the narrator slips into the old man’s bedroom, removes him from his bed, and drags the bed over his body to kill him. He cuts him into pieces and buries the body under the floorboards. Later, the police come to question him, he is disturbed by the sound of the old man’s heart, which he perceives to be still beating beneath the floorboards. He is so disturbed that he confesses to some officers of the murder because of the loud heartbeats of the man’s heart, which symbolizes the narrator’s consciousness. The way the narrator told his story is unreliable because he is not sane, he is uneasy and paranoid, and he is confused about what he really feels and
Raven ran down the corridor while multiple attackers we catching up. She turned down a hall to see 6 more attackers. She had to act fast. She looked around desperately trying to find an exit. She cursed quietly in Russian and then braced herself for the attack. Bang!
In my opinion the sniper is a round character. There are various examples of him being a complex and very humane character throughout the story. In the beginning it states that he has the face of a student and is therefore quite young but despite that he’s a sniper who has no doubt killed others before. He later kills two nationalists with no remorse but after he kills the enemy sniper, the adrenaline from the battle leaves his body and he immediately becomes regretful. He is sickened by the body of the man he shot and he begins to curse the war. This shows a complex personality because although he is fighting for what he believes in, he doesn’t like the means to achieve them and the death of others. The sniper is also shown to be able to persevere,
The long June twilight faded into night. Dublin lay developed in darkness, but for the dim light of the moon that shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets and the dark waters of the Liffey. Around the beleaguered Four Courts the heavy guns roared. Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms. Republicans and Free Staters were waging civil war.
E-A psychopath and a very nervous man those are the character traits that describe the narrator. Also the narrator could have just left his town instead of killing the old man and his vulture evil eye.
Scott Fitzgerald developed characters whose description tension the reader. Characterization is a very useful method “by which the writer reveals the personality of the character” (NCTE, 2004). First, Fitzgerald created a hard working protagonist, Dexter, who was a middle class kid, but caddies at Golf Club. The author wrote “Mr. Jones- himself and not his ghost came up to Dexter with tear in his eyes and said that Dexter was the best caddy in the club” (218). Dexter loved by golf crew members because he was a hard worker even if the long Minnesota weather shut down like the white lid of box. When Dexter was sixteen, he dedicated his full energy to his job, making thirty dollars a month. Beside, Mr. Mortimer jones appreciated Dexter that, he
A protagonist is described as the prominent character in a novel or text. In Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, John the Savage is the central protagonist opposed to Bernard Marx or Helmholtz Watson because he symbolizes cultural difference amongst the World State and the Savage Reservation. Although Bernard and Helmholtz demonstrate differences that would not be accepted in the civilized society, they are only seen as leading characters. Huxley uses John’s character to point out the short comings of what would become of a negative Utopia or “dystopia”, which is the driving force behind Huxley’s message in the novel. Bernard’s physical difference would be the sole cause of his rejection to society and would make him one of Huxley’s leading
