Throughout the story Beowulf displays many attributes of a hero. For example, he displays bravery, honor and strength in many situations throughout the entire story, proving to everyone why he is a hero. Although these aren’t all of the characteristics of a hero, these are the most important of a hero back in Beowulf’s time and these characteristics is what most people strived to have but only came to a select few. The first characteristic and maybe the most important one that Beowulf possessed was bravery. The first trait Beowulf shows off is his bravery. He shows his bravery by traveling across the ocean to ask the Danes if he and his men can go out and defeat the terrorizing monster Grendal. In the poem Beowulf goes to the King of the Danes and says “… Grendal and I are called/ Together, and I’ve come. Grant me, then,/ Lord and protector of this noble place,/ A single request! … That I, alone and with the help of my men,/ May purge all evil
The first characteristic that Beowulf brings forth is strength. The strength of no other man nor monster is brought forth by beowulf “The victory for the proof hanging high from the rafters where beowulf had hung it was the monster's arm claw shoulder and all” (Ln 515-517). Beowulf was the saving grace for the people of Herot. That is only one of the few acts of strength that Beowulf portrays. Beowulf also killed 5 monsters “I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from the earth” (Ln
Beowulf possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry gives the feeling that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men. Fame is something that makes a hero more noted. Beowulf’s popularity
The first trait, determination, is prevalent throughout the whole story. Each time Beowulf would go into Battle, he would be determined to win for his people because he was fighting for them. The next trait, physical strength, comes up in all of the battles. For example, when Beowulf was fighting Grendel’s mother he picked out the sword that no one else could pick up because it was heavy. Another example of Beowulf’s strength happened when he defeated Grendel and ripped off his arm. Another trait is courage, which Beowulf had before he faced every battle. In the last battle, Beowulf was not as strong anymore and he was fifty years older, however that did not stop him from fighting. It was very brave of him to fight in his condition. The next trait that Beowulf showed was loyalty. Beowulf was loyal numerous times for different things. When he fought he was loyal to helping the people of Geats, and he was loyal to the people he fought, especially Grendel. When Beowulf fought with just his hands against Grendel it came across as loyalty. Beowulf fought against Grendel the only way Grendel could fight. Even though weapons cannot hurt Grendel, Beowulf could have walked away from the fight, but he stayed loyal to fighting on the same terms as Grendel. The last trait, leadership, was prevalent throughout the story as well. Beowulf led his soldiers through each battle and

Arthur Ashe said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” People say to be a hero, a person has to have these five qualities: courage, selflessness, humility, patience, and be caring. While a hero needs to meet some of these requirements, they do not have to do something extravagant. They could be a normal person, such as a firefighter or policeman, saving a person's life. In the Anglo-Saxon era, people were illiterate. There would be bards that came around to entertain the people. They would recite these poems or songs about a hero, such as Beowulf, doing incredible things. The Anglo-Saxons thought that a hero was warrior,
Epic heroes possess qualities that separate them from the average man. They are defined by four main characteristics: 1. Being born of nobility or a high position, 2. Possessing superhuman courage, 3. Exhibiting traits that reflect the important ideals of society, and 4. Performing actions which determine the fate of a group or a nation. All of which are traits which can be recognized in the epic Beowulf.
