Sorority Groups
Have you ever felt what it was like to be a part of a group? There is a wide range of groups one could be a part of, whether it be a religious group, a group at school, a mob, a sorority or fraternity, everyone has been a part of some type of group in their life. Being a part of a group makes one feel important by allowing oneself to engage in tasks that could potentially benefit oneself, someone else, or a society as a whole. Engaging in a group allows one to feel like they are making a difference in the world and for themselves. They all want their names to be known so they can feel important and well liked. Even the girls who are already a part of the sorority feel like they need to maintain their status in the group by making their sorority more known through volunteer opportunities and by advertising their sisterhood so everyone on campus knows who they are and how their sorority may be better than the other sororities on campus. Therefore, their loss of self-awareness leads them to alter their personality and appearance in order to get approval from everyone in and out of the sisterhood. Also, in the article, “It’s All Greek to Me”, Glenn Geher states that, “there’s a stigma that goes along with fraternities and sororities; parties, peer pressure, beer pong, exclusivity, and secrets.” This idea relates to how certain members of the sisterhood do not normally party and drink alcohol, however when they are with their sisters they feel obligated and pressured by others to confide in something they have no interest in doing. For example, many sorority girls feel like they have more authority and power when together, rather than when they are not with each other. For example, in the article, “How Fraternities and Sororities Impact Students”,
Alan Reifman states that, “there may be something about people who join Greek-letter organizations—extraversion, risk-taking, excitement-seeking, and so forth—” also, “the sense of confidence.” This idea relates to how sorority girls act differently. For example, in a sorority one gives speeches, volunteers, and creates ideas to make their community a better place. When together, sorority girls may have no issue volunteering and helping out the community because they have a collection of girls by their side helping and supporting each other out. This sense of community builds each and every girls confidence to a point where they can take on anything life throws at them. However, when they are not with each other, one has to face the world alone, and without the feeling of someone supporting and being there for them it can cause a sense
