Sorority Groups
Have you ever felt what it was like to be a part of a group? There is a wide range of groups one could be a part of, whether it be a religious group, a group at school, a mob, a sorority or fraternity, everyone has been a part of some type of group in their life. Being a part of a group makes one feel important by allowing oneself to engage in tasks that could potentially benefit oneself, someone else, or a society as a whole. Engaging in a group allows one to feel like they are making a difference in the world and for themselves. Therefore, while being in a group is a beneficial way to bond with others, feel a variety of different emotions, and learn new

They all want their names to be known so they can feel important and well liked. Even the girls who are already a part of the sorority feel like they need to maintain their status in the group by making their sorority more known through volunteer opportunities and by advertising their sisterhood so everyone on campus knows who they are and how their sorority may be better than the other sororities on campus. Therefore, their loss of self-awareness leads them to alter their personality and appearance in order to get approval from everyone in and out of the sisterhood. Also, in the article, “It’s All Greek to Me”, Glenn Geher states that, “there’s a stigma that goes along with fraternities and sororities; parties, peer pressure, beer pong, exclusivity, and secrets.” This idea relates to how certain members of the sisterhood do not normally party and drink alcohol, however when they are with their sisters they feel obligated and pressured by others to confide in something they have no interest in doing. Unfortunately, this idea turns back to the idea of fitting in and how the atmosphere they are in negatively influences one’s decision to be well-liked …show more content…
For example, many sorority girls feel like they have more authority and power when together, rather than when they are not with each other. For example, in the article, “How Fraternities and Sororities Impact Students”,
Alan Reifman states that, “there may be something about people who join Greek-letter organizations—extraversion, risk-taking, excitement-seeking, and so forth—” also, “the sense of confidence.” This idea relates to how sorority girls act differently. For example, in a sorority one gives speeches, volunteers, and creates ideas to make their community a better place. When together, sorority girls may have no issue volunteering and helping out the community because they have a collection of girls by their side helping and supporting each other out. This sense of community builds each and every girls confidence to a point where they can take on anything life throws at them. However, when they are not with each other, one has to face the world alone, and without the feeling of someone supporting and being there for them it can cause a sense
Sororities encourage one to become involved in the community, develop leadership skills and pursue lifetime goals with passion. The sisterhood that sorority members experience helps females build confidence and lasting friendships that are beneficial throughout their lives. Sorority members are also granted special privileges on and off
As I started to tell people where I was going to college almost everyone asked, “Are you going to rush?”. I explained to them that I didn’t think I would fir in or see any positive outcomes out of it other than getting into parties. One day, a girl that attended Washington State University, asked the same question that everyone else had been asking. When I told her no and my reasoning she was shocked that I thought of a sorority in that way. “You have been watching way too many movies girl”. She started to talk about her experience being in a sorority. One of the main things that stuck out to me was the girls who really weren’t stuck up or full of themselves. Of course, would always be a few but for the most part she said they were genuine people that cared about each other. We talked about how it isn’t all about partying and how a lot of the houses are strict about grades. Grade checks are prominent throughout the
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
Learning how to work effectively in a group situation is key to success in many professions as well as in social situations. Groups vary from each other based on the individuals that make up each group, all of us belong to various groups at one time or another. The roles that we fulfill vary from group to
When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social aspect. Most people don’t think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a social setting in both positive and negative manners.
Prior to joining my sorority, I assumed that I had found and established what I thought a true community should look like here on Grounds. In my various groups and clubs, I felt that I had satisfied my craving to feel involved and connected to UVa and the Charlottesville community. But in reality, I was not satisfied. Especially at UVa, there is an overwhelming sense to prove yourself and what you can do. And I felt this pressure immensely. But as soon as I entered the sorority environment, I did not feel this pressure in the slightest and slowly became aware of a different kind of community at work. I soon realized that community within my sorority was different because the strong women around me did not care about what I did or what I could
The sororities have their own language, they use words like pledge, bid, big, little, active, lavaliere, letters, and philanthropy. A pledge is a person who accepts a bid, and a bid is an invitation to a specific chapter at their school (Nakagoshi 1). When a female student wants to pledge a sorority they interview for a bid and the sorority decides if they want to have the new student pledge or not. If the pledge gets the bid then the student gets a big, a big is an older girl who has been part of the sorority for a year of more, and the big is like a big sister they are supposed to care of their “little” or new pledge (Nakagoshi 1). An active is a member of the sorority that has been part of the sorority for a few years. When a sister is
Originally, I had the common misconception that fraternities solely focused on parties, drinking and their social status. As I further researched the founding principles of Alpha Phi Alpha I became aware they collectively prioritize scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha is
Greek Organizations have been an influence of college life for many years. Typically there are two sections of the Greek System, social organizations and the profession organizations. Along with the parties and alcohol that is associated with Greek Organizations, they do many other more positive things. They participate in charity events, community service, and volunteering for needy people. Alongside the positives of Greek Organizations, there is always a downfall. For instance, dues and fees are required which is typically a lot of money out of your college student bank account. There are many things that take place in a fraternity or sorority that people don’t consider when they are eager to join. You are required to follow many steps in the process of being accepted into an organization. To start, you
I knew going into college that I wanted to join a sorority. I was a legacy and felt the need to carry on that legacy. However, what ended up happening was not what I had in mind. Instead, I created my own legacy by joining a different sorority than those of my family members. But what I came to find was that the chapter that I chose was full of girls who cared about their friends and sisters. I stayed because I too cared about the other members who are a part of the same sisterhood.
Initially, a sorority can be broken down into its classical views and romantic views, but it does contain more romantic. A sorority is an organization, and with any organization you must form a foundation with rules, which is apart of the classic views. “The classic mode, by contrast, proceeds by reason and by laws---which are themselves underlying forms of thought and behavior.” (ZMM, 85-86). This foundation that they create will help an organization establish everything they want to achieve. For Alpha Chi Omega our foundation starts with our bylaws. Our bylaws contain all the rules that our members must follow in order to stay in good standing with the organization. If
I think that everyone could find a group that would welcome them. I didn’t think that I was a sorority girl at all. While I like to dress cute sometimes, I am more of a tomboy, because I like to fish, go ride four wheelers, and play sports. I thought a sorority wouldn’t be a place that I would fit in. It is definitely not the stereotypical sororities here.
Groups are fun and good for essays and projects. Groups can make you more friends. If there are 1 or more people you can work faster. Groups are good for brainstorming. Groups have more than 1 person working at a time.
In-groups have many positive consequences for the members of the group. For example, in-groups provide a sense of belonging. Being a part of a group of individuals with similar views and experiences cultivate a sense of solidarity. Furthermore, these groups can foster an environment of understanding; when one makes a mistake, it is more likely that a person who is a
Firstly, I try to think about everyone as a group. For example, there was a group member in one of my social project groups who refused to cooperate and listened
