Social Media or Anti-Social Social media is a modern way human beings connect with each other. By posting photos of one’s everyday moments that share experiences and one’s daily thrills for all to see. Social media allows one to communicate as well with comments and likes. The comments and likes keeps one’s personal internet community connected within each other. The community ranges from family members, close friends, past friends from high school, and even strangers in some cases. So, is social media a blessing or curse? “Irrespective of the terminology used, it is evident that excessive internet use results in decreased work productivity, neglect of daily life activities, affects family time, relationships get strained, communication within family reduces, meal quality get affected, reduction in hobbies and developing mental health issues” (Nawaz & Anand, 2003; Young, 1998; Beard, 2005; Kraut et al., 1998). Can something that designed to bring one together with others somehow pull each other apart. The time spent is excessive and can lead to personal dangers. The dangers can be addressed if the time spent is limited. Human beings should limit their use of social media because the dangers brought towards one’s life such as social interactions, health, one’s identity, self-worth, and academics. Life is something we face and deal with naturally, not electronically. Social media is an unnatural way to grow up. With simple adjustments, one can solve these issues created as
Since the early 2000s we have changed the meaning of what it means to be social. We have exchanged letters for texts, and faces for pixels. We have in a way become more social and lonely a society could be and we are still progressing. In a less dramatic tone, social networking is a way to contact anyone around the world; from friends to strangers. But the big issue is, what is it doing to our youth and sociaty as a whole. As for our argument we seem to have a case of how good or bad these types of interactions are.
As a child grows up, everything they are exposed to affects their personality and shapes them into their own person. The schools they attend, the television shows they watch, and the people they are around can influence their ideology of the world and their place in it. Some people view social media (YouTube, Instagram, Musical.ly, Snapchat, etc.) as a good way to distract their children and keep them entertained, but children should not be allowed to spend a majority of their time on social media accounts. Some parents may argue that they should not shield their children from reality, but it is important to reduce the amount of social media children are exposed to, in order to reduce the amount of biased information and prejudice they may have.
With growing social unrest in the United States, due to differing political and social opinions, many young adults have taken to social media to share their beliefs with anybody that is willing to listen. The importance of social media in social and political movements became clear to many people during the rise of the Black Lives Matter campaign. Anybody that had an opinion on the campaign could take to their personal social media sites and share what they had to say. While mass media, like news companies and talk shows, allows opinions and biases to spread due to a single, often influential, person sharing their beliefs to a viewership, social media allows anybody to have a say in an issue and brings differing opinions together. By starting social movements on applications such as Twitter and Facebook, users and activists are not limited to the audience that subscribes to that particular site, but rather are able to be heard by anybody and create conversation beyond a small circle of friends and family. Twitter and other social media sites are valuable ways for young adults to read and distribute news in a way that eliminates the bias of the mainstream media towards big social movements and helps propel these movements further, specifically the racial profiling of blacks in the media.
We all fail to see and understand the empowering role social media has set in motion in today's society . It is with an undeniable fact that social media has impacted variety of cultures, economies, and our overall perspective on how we see the world. Social media is best known for its form for bring individuals to share and learn new ideas, connect with , and relate to.Although there is much more of different varieties that come from the benefit of using social media ,it has also allowed us to communicate with friends and family from any corner of the world, It has also come with a risk. It has drastically impacted negatively our lives because we are either alone or its form to change us through time.
Selfies have become a form of communication and culture. They provide us with a sense of validation and self expression. Often, this dictates how the world interacts with and categorizes those who put themselves on display. In much the same way that we learn interpersonal skills as we grow older, we have adapted ourselves socially along with the development of social media into our everyday lives.
Do you ever ask yourself, is this post necessary to share with others? How will this post affect the lives of those around me? As of 2017, The Global Overview showed that “2.80 billion global social media users use social media sites.” With that being said, “the whole world now uses a smart phone and almost two-thirds of the world’s population now has a mobile phone.” (Digital in2017: Global Overview). Today the majority of young American adults use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram and etc. As of the recent years, social media has been a great way to connect with friends, family and has also been a great way to promote small businesses. Amy Jo Martin once said, “Just as we teach our children how to ride a bike, we need to teach them how to navigate social media and make the right moves that will help them. The physical world is similar to the virtual world in many cases. It's about being aware. We can prevent many debacles if we're educated.” (Brainyquotes.com) With that being said, Amy is stating, just how we teach our children anything in life we must also teach them the basics of social media because that will one day affect them later in life. Therefore, social media can be effective but can also affect others life’s around us.
Social networks have benefits for many in the world, but there are other effects of social networks too; for example, cyber bullying, stalking, no personal privacy, and keeping track of individuals as they use social networking to update their status. Especially teenagers use social networking sites. How can society prevent all of this technology from causing harm to each individual teenager? Many people use their social networks for entertainment to pass the time. In recent years, I have seen many of my friends do this while waiting for the teacher to come to the classroom. They turn to their social network site when standing or sitting to wait for the teacher to arrive. They do not communicate with each other verbally. Sometimes, I feel like I do not know them at all. It’s complete silence. How can society help children, especially teenagers, to understand how the social networks are affecting them? Maybe parents need to stop their hands in some way. The American Academy of Pediatrics wrote, “The parents of teenager need to involve in the online websites for their children. There are 22 percent of teenagers who log in to their favorite social networks site more than 10 times a day. “That is just too much social networking!
Our generation prides itself at the capability it has when interacting with classmates at a quick and easy rate through social media. It's almost as if they want to be inquisitive about other human beings' lives. Perhaps because their lives are so boring they need to fill it up with images of a person else's lifestyles. The food they ate, the places they went, what movie star is dating who, Kylie Jenner's “puberty sprout”, Kendrick Lamar's new album(which is wonderful). We envy what we see and examine on these social media platforms, but forget what's actual and pretend. Being a person who likes to read, having a computer or cell phone makes the experience distinct. While you examine from an ebook you have something tangible to hold and enjoy. When I have a laptop and/or telephone even as I read, I have a tendency to get distracted effortlessly. When I have a laptop or telephone near while I'm studying or writing, I have the option of happening Instagram, FB, ship texts, take a look at my favorite splendor guru, have a look at meals videos, and so on. As an entire, the experience of analyzing and writing becomes tarnished with the consistent dings of incoming messages because your pal appreciated your photo or your friend is texting you a few juicy gossip. I can be reading for a physics test the next day but I by no means end analyzing due to my favorite YouTube channel posts this exceptional meals films, So I watch it and store it on my playlist, so I can make it later
What is social media? If one was to ask an everyday teenager of this generation, they would probably say something to the effect of “It’s a digital platform that helps everyone stay connected no matter what they’re doing.” However, if one was to ask someone from the prior generation what social media is, they might say “It leads to the youth of America becoming more: anti-social, depressed, self-conscious, and more than likely destroys the chances of someone making a career for themselves later in life.” So which answer is correct? Well, surprisingly enough the prior generation is. Social media leaves a digital footprint that can’t be erased no matter what precautions are taken.
Social media is, generally, any online platform that promotes communication between your friends. Social media often allows users to post pictures or words to express themselves and let his or her friends know what is going on in his or her life. Being a new and evolving thing, obviously us as humans are going to create controversy about this new technology’s effects on the brain and body- whether they be good or bad. Most people believe anything they hear about social media’s effects on attention span, or its effects on people’s own view of themselves; no one ever talks about the benefits of social media though. Social media is a mostly good thing, and here is why.
Ten million years ago, humans lived a simple life, worrying only about getting protection from wild animals and gathering food. With the invention of small tools, made from stone and other tangible resources, humans living in the Stone Age overcame their worries and led the way for not only mental, but technological advancement. Over time, the human race has become more educated and technological; however, in the last 100 years, humans have become concerned about insignificant matters and problems ranging from the type of phone to buy to how many likes an Instagram photo gets. Through the juxtaposition of the quality of life before and after the technological revolution, one can realize that the quality of life before the revolution was less-stressful, while the quality of life after was much more unpleasant and demanding. One aspect of technology which has contributed to the increase in anxiety and distress in humans is social media. Within the last 20 years, cultural critics of social media have argued that it creates a false sense of connection and contributes to decreased productivity among its users. Although social media aids in the greater access and exchange of online information, while connecting people socially, it does not enhance wellbeing because it inhibits people from meeting their basic needs by creating false realities and negatively affecting mental health.
The use of social media in this modern time poses negative influence on the youth. For this reason, the parent must exercise some level of restrictions by limiting the time children spend on the internet, and also filters the data content available to them. The tremendous growth of social media has caused the youth to share unnecessary information on the internet making them vulnerable to sex predators, kidnappers, child molesters, identity theft, bullies, and so on. In his Blog, Suren Ramasubbu the Co-founder and CEO of Mobicip.com observers that “According to a report by Common Sense Media, 75% of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites, of which 68% use Facebook as their main social networking tool” (Ramasubbu 2017). Ramasubbu went on to emphasize that while social media clearly plays an important role in social connection and technical skills, it risks cannot be unnoticed in the life of the youths. The difficulties with self-control and defenseless to peer pressure makes teenagers helpless with such problems as social depression, social needs, sleep deficiency, and cyberbullying which are deemed realistic threats.
At the beginning of the technology age there are bound to be some heavy influences when it comes to social media and the way voting will be affected by it. That doesn’t change the fact that change is constant, and the thing about change and our society is that we learn to adapt to new ideas and challenges relatively fast. Democracy evolves as we evolve and it has always been that way.
Today, we continue our advancement of new technologies and inventions throughout the world. Social media platforms thrive in the populations and is well known to everyone to be able to share ideas and deliver messages across the globe. However, there is a dilemma, with the growing popularity of users and consumers, others see social media as a tool to establish business, influence and intimidation. The world is filled with people who take superiority to those who are naive. Social media has many drawbacks in the progression of the modernized world, people should be aware of the detrimental effects of social media in our globe.
We are the generation that no longer strives to keep things hidden. Instead we do the complete opposite and prefer everything to be out in the open, we are the open generation, a generation that lacks privacy. We give society this opportunity by posting our life on social media. We allow access to our personal information, not only to our friends and family, but strangers as well but our generation doesn’t see this as a bad thing.
