APA Referencing Summary
A guide to referencing based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). This summary gives examples of the APA referencing style for a number of information sources that you will commonly use. If you cannot find the relevant pattern here, then refer to the APA Publication Manual (6th ed.). Learning Skills highly recommends that you purchase a copy of Robert Perrin’s Pocket Guide to APA Style (3rd ed.) from the Co-op Bookshop. You should also explore using the EndNote software, which you can download for free from the library website. EndNote helps you to reference correctly, and to organize your research and notes. Go to:

13) (Boland, 2001, Conclusion section, para. 2). When paraphrasing, “or referring to an idea contained in another work, you are encouraged to provide a page or paragraph number” (APA, 2010, p. 171, para. 6.04). Getting into the habit of quoting page numbers will help readers locate material in lengthy texts, and will assist in your revision. For a single page, the number is given thus: p. 27. For a range of pages: pp. 245–246.

Reference List
One author MacCulloch, D. (1996). Thomas Cranmer: A life. New Haven: Yale University Press. Note the hanging indent for reference list items. In titles of books and articles in reference lists, capitalize only the first word, the first word after a colon or em dash (—), and proper nouns (APA, 2010, p. 101, para. 4.15). Where more than one place of publication is given, show only the first listed place. For the rules of capitalization of titles within the body of the paper, see APA, 2010, p. 101, para. 4.15.
In-text Citation
APA allows three forms for in-text citations: 1. Anne Bolyn died “with dignity” on 19 May 1536 (MacCulloch, 1996, p. 159). 2. MacCulloch (1996, p. 386) has suggested . . . 3. MacCulloch (1996) argues that “. . .” (p. 231).
Note the space before page numbers. Quotations of 40 or more words are set off as a block quotation, indented about 1cm. Quotation marks and italics are not used in this case.
In-text citations should note the author(s) and the publication date for a paraphrase. For a direct quotation, citations should include author(s), date, and page number. See the following examples:
The APA style of writing has been in existence for over 80 years and has been revised 6 times over that time period. APA has been recognized as a guide for many important disciplines beyond Psychology including business and education which indicates the standards credibility in the publishing community (Hunsley, 2010). The long tradition of the APA standard establishes the credibility and importance. It has evolved to keep up with modern research and technology. Using the same style as others in your profession allows for peer reviewers to read the article quicker and also have a reference go back to so they ensure data, tables and references are all documented correctly. The APA standard is helps researchers to distribute important
It is also important to utilize proper APA formatting to recognize the author who wrote the article. A lot of time and work goes into writing the articles we have access to in the Bethel library, and the ethically correct thing to do is to give credit where credit is due.
Paraphrasing is more acceptable and should be done frequently, again with appropriate references of the author’s name and publication date. Should several paragraphs be from the same reference, each paragraph needs to have the reference at least once, usually after the first or last sentence. However, it is appropriate to use multiple references in a paragraph. When this is done, place the reference after each new reference so that the reader knows from where the information came.

’s words, even if they constitute only part of a sentence, with quotation marks and specific citation. Citations may be footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references. (USNA, 2004).
The APA style calls for three kinds of information to be included in in-text citations. The author's last name and the work's date of publication must always appear. The page number is only in a citation to a direct quotation.
Use APA formatting for in-text citations and reference page. You are expected to paraphrase and not use direct quotes. Deductions will be taken when direct quotes are used and found to be unnecessary;
When you include a direct quotation or paraphrase referring to a specific passage in your paper, always include the author and year, as well as the page number, as part of the citation. APA requires the author, year, and page number for direct quotations and recommends providing the same information for paraphrases.
•Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
It is important to learn and utilize proper APA formatting of in-text citations and references because it gives credit to the sources you used to complete your research.
