| | | | Section 2: Application of Personality Theory Theory Description and Rationale A central tenet of classical psychoanalytic or psychodynamic theory is that three mental statues—id, ego, and superego play a major role in normal and pathological personality development. Traditionally, the id has been conceptualized as the source of drives and impulses, whereas the superego represents both the idealized self and conscience or moral code, and the ego is responsible of rational, reality-orientated thought. Early experiences help determine the developing child’s ego strength—the degree to which the ego carries our reality testing functions and deals effectively with impulses. Consequently, adequate parenting and minimal trauma or disruption enables the child to devote considerable psychic energy to developing good reality testing skills and acquiring effective self control strategies (Bronstein, 2005). The movie Antwone Fisher represents what can be characterized as the quintessential approach, or deconstruction of the psychodynamic theory. Specifically, the movie outlines the main character’s personality pathology. It goes on examines various aspects of the

In Freud’s theory the Ego mediates over the id, superego and the external world. Its task is to find a balance between primitive drives, morals, and reality while satisfying the id and superego. The weaker the Ego is the more infantile and impulsive the behavior its owner, the more distorted his or her perception of self and reality. Rationalizing is substituting a plausible and acceptable rationale for the unacceptable feeling. Jane holds some egocentric thought characteristics-feeling of invincibility- that is impacting her behavior while in college as a young adult. These feelings of invulnerability frequently lead to risk taking behavior.
The transformation of Fisher throughout the film was achieved in part by Dr. Davenport’s approach to therapy. During his sessions with Fisher, he took on a psychodynamic perspective to gain insight into his client’s unconscious thought process to

Personality research emerged in the 1930 and research continues to the present. Given the focus on criminological research, studies exploring personality and crime have been limited. However, the existing research is extremely informative. Some of the earliest research on personality and crime comes from the work of Hans Eysenck. Eysenck's work emerged from his exploration of personality traits among 700 male service patients
