1. There are three benefits of progress monitoring in comparison to an annual achievement test. The first benefit is the administered test gives teachers’ feedback immediately. Allowing to accurately use the students’ scores gives an introduction to the second benefit. The second benefit is teachers will be able to take the information from the test and make adjustments to their teaching methods. If the test results demonstrate that students are not comprehending a specific area of learning, the teacher can instantly make adjustments. The last benefit is teachers receive the information immediately, because they do not have to wait for the scores from the assessments to be evaluated. There are two different type of progress monitoring which are Mastery Measurement (MM) and Curriculum-Base Learning (CBM). One of the differences between MM and CBM is the structure of sampling items on tests. MM test students’ performance is based on a unit of study, which is taught one method at a time and only focuses on what they are currently learning. In comparison, CBM integrates the concepts that students are learning into every new lesson they are learning. Another difference between the two is how they schedule assessments. MM schedules assessment several times and test students based on the skill that they have learned from a unit. CBM also assesses students multiple times, but students are tested on multiple skills and gives teacher accurate indication of students’ progress within each assessment. Step 3: Graph the Score- Graphing students score is helpful for teachers to have visuals of students performance. When making adjustments on a lesson, the teacher will know what areas the student needs additional support or clarification. Step 4: Set Goals- Setting goals for students’ academic performance will demonstrate the progress throughout the year, or where the student needs to continue to work on to reach their academic goal. After a long year of teaching the core curriculum standards, every year in the spring, students are to take a progress test to determine if they have learned the minimum required, to determine if their teacher had taught effectively. When I think about assessments, I think about State assessments, standardized test, Maps, and AYP. However not all assessments are test. There are many different types of assessments, for example, there are comprehensive, formative, summative, and performance assessments. Different types of assessments help guide students to do the very best work they are capable of doing.

On students desk there will also be colored cards to explain where each student believes they are. A green card will explain that the student understands it, a yellow card means they understand some of it, and red means they do not understand how to complete the work. Napavine School District uses the data from analysis to determine if we are on point to reaching our goals by the end of each school year. Once each department has evaluated previous years’ exam scores, each department sets a goal for their subject area. Each department shares that goal with the entire staff and we develop an all school strategic objective and action plan based on our needs. We revisit the data each year prior to the beginning of the school year to identify areas of growth or lack of progress towards our goal. While this is satisfactory in that we note our success or failures from year to year, it woeful in that we don’t have a clear understanding of which students are not making progress during the course of each year. These factors include the level of connectedness between the student and their teacher, the role of a parent in motivating the student to learn as well as the student’s own effort. For a sixth grader, who shows fluctuating classroom performance with better test performances but poor on homework, a partnership between the student, teacher and parents can be forged to improve the student’s performance. This would be done through data collection on their progress by observation, documenting, measuring and monitoring the data for implementation.
