The Ancient Greeks have done so much for the western civilizations. Their success in art, philosophy, architecture, science, government, and history have influenced the western civilizations to use their ideas. Many different people came up with different ideas to contribute to their government. New ideas and conclusions were constantly being made because of philosophers asking questions all the time. They really helped shaped Ancient Greece's government.
The Greeks made many influences to their medical practices as well as ours today. Hippocrates was one of the many doctors at the time and he made many new discoveries in medicines which really helped people live longer and made his procedures a lot easier. He was a very trustworthy doctor. He made an oath stating that he wouldn't do anything to put his patients in harm by giving them bad medicines. Instead, he swore to do everything possible to cures patients and help make them feel better. This was known as the Hippocrates Oath (Doc 4). Even to this day, doctors must swear to not do anything that can cause harm to their patients. It's part of their training while in medical school. The only time a doctor can "harm" his or her patients is when the patient signs a

The most famous philosophers at the time were Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Socrates believe that you had to constantly ask questions to get a better understanding of how things works. This is exactly what he encouraged all Greek citizens as well as his students to do. He strongly believed that an unexamined life is not worth living (Doc 1). One of his biggest contributions to Western Civilizations was the belief that logic and reasoning was critical for all people to have. This has made people think about why decisions are made and wonder how things work. Making conclusions and asking questions has helped shape the U.S. into how it is
The Government of the Athenian people had a large impact on western civilizations. In document three, Pericles states his beliefs about democracy. Pericles states that he believes all men that have the opportunity to take a part in their government should. America, a western civilization was greatly influenced by the Greek government. First of all, everyone has the opportunity to vote or to take
Their amazing culture is still seen in today’s society and their accomplishments will never go unrecognized. You can thank the Greeks for your alarm clocks, medicine, olympics, and maps too but those were just to name a few. Today we are so far along in technology it’s crazy to even think about, the Greeks pretty much got us started. You can’t forget about those Romans though, with their outstanding innovations with aqueducts, concrete, roads and highways, the Julian calendar and much more. We cannot forget about their cultures, they were influinical with their language, politics, educational systems, philosophy, science, and arts. Without the ancient Greeks and their culture we would not have beloved democracy. The world’s first democracy was created in athens, Greece our democratic government is a little different however, in America today we use a representative democracy but in ancient Greece a direct democracy was used but we got the idea of a democracy itself from Greece. We also wouldn’t have the Olympics, the olympic games are something that is looked forward to by many today and the whole thing came from the Greeks! The olympic games started in Greece in 1896 in honour of the Greek god Zeus. The Romans culture also made a lasting impact on today’s society, language is a big part of any culture and in English we derive a lot of our words from Latin which is the language used in Ancient Rome. We also use three branches of
The Greeks laid the foundation to Western Civilization and were one of the world’s first inventors of democracy, politics, Philosophy, science, and art. During the time of the Greeks, it would see some of the world’s most significant leaders and politicians. People like Themistocles and Pericles who would lead them in war against the Spartans and others. Great thinkers such as Socrates, who lead the Greeks during its last great empire. Athens would soon rise to greatness during the second invasion of Greece by the Persian Army, but on the backs of its traders, farmers and its military. Athens was the heart of the culture revolution that would spread across the world.
The Ancient Greeks society left a significant impact that has helped develop along with influence other civilizations including the modern World today. Democritus, a Greek
The first thing that came to me when I considered what Ancient Greece’s contributions to civilization was Socrates. In one of my education classes I learned about the Socratic method of teaching. The Socratic method is only one of the various contributions to education from Ancient Greece. The societies of Ancient Greece made various contributions to the Western world and to civilization, including their art, intellectual pursuits and ideas, the example of their structure, and their historical accounts.
“My ancestors and brothers where kings of Sparta. I, Cynisca victorious with the chariot of swift-footed horses, erected this statue. I declare that I am the only Woman in all of Greece to have won this Crown”
The Classical Age of Greece, not only underwent a remarkable cultural change, but it also marked a great turning point of clinical medicine, where the perception of the supernatural as a healing power and medicine was divorced. This is supported by Lambert as he addresses that “The transition from a priestly to lay a profession of medicine was aided by a group of Greek thinkers and students of human life and death and the illness of man and the conditions of their occurrence.” Amongst those great thinkers was Hippocrates, one of Greece’s most influential scientist and physician. Hippocrates, born in Cos, was destined to a medical practice path for “he was the son of Herakleides and belonged to a family of physicians who claimed their ancestry from Asclepius, the god of medicine.” Hippocrates opposed the foundation of medicine of ancient Greece. Hippocrates strongly believed that there should be a separation between all supernatural force and disease. He dismissed the religious and magical approach and confided towards a logical interpretation for illness and disease. He profoundly observed diseases in detail and accordingly focused in diagnosis more rather than treatment. It was Hippocrates that made the leap
Greece is considered to be the candle of Western Civilization and birthplace of democracy. Athens and Sparta were two of the most important city-states, or poleis, during Ancient Greece. Athens gave Western Civilization democracy, sculptures, and architecture while Sparta gave us the advantages of a defensive military force. Without those two important city-states, Western Civilization would have been completely different and democracy would not exist. In fact, the entire world could of changed (for better or worse) if there wasn’t Athens and
The planet in which we live, Earth, has existed for an estimated 4.5 billion years and humans have only inhabited it for 200,000 years. It is safe to say that Earth has seen many historical civilizations and organisms come and go or in other cases thrive, such as Greece. Despite previously being made up of many independent city-states, Greek citizens realized that their shared culture indeed united them. Ancient Greece was not nearly as united in the sense of community as it is today, but their way of thinking, ideas, and people have not only linked what was once small city-states but also paved the way for many Western regularities. Greek principles are still very much present in Western civilizations through their leading philosophies, a government ahead of its time, and their knowledge
Before Hippocrates, the perception of medicine was very different. He was born in 460 BCE. He started "scientific medicine". He was known as the father of medicine. Before Hippocrates, Greeks believed that Gods sent disease and provoked death. All disease could be healed by the process of propitiation (the action of propitiating or appeasing a god, spirit, or person) of the Gods through sacrifices and other rituals. Only the chosen ones could communicate with the Gods; they were people who were worshiped after their death as deities and were undertaking the task to mediate between the patient and the God for the sake of the first. Deities and heroes who possessed the art of healing and practiced primitive forms of medicine as shown in Greek mythology. Near contemporaries of Hippocrates had different approaches to medicine. Petron believed that disease derived from improper diet. Hippon thought moisture was the key to health. Philoaus determined that there were three rather than four humors-bile, blood, phlegm. Thrasymachus focused on an excess of heat or cold. Menerates sought a balance of blood, bile, phlegm, and breath. Little is known of Greek medicine before the appearance of texts written in the fifth century B.C. Folk healing was often used, and the healer in turn often summoned help from the gods. Some herbal drug therapies existed. Various gods were identified with disease and injury. Apollo, the god of healing, both causing plagues and providing
The goal of the great fifth century physician, Hippocrates, was to set a universal code of conduct for doctors. Written around 400 BC, the Hippocratic Oath is a promise by doctors to uphold certain standards, along with what they should not do, in their practice. The father of medicine, Hippocrates, emphasized reason and honesty when he penned this code of ethics for physicians to abide. This document has sustained much purpose to this day despite its age. Through historical analysis of the text, one can infer much about the values of the ancient Greeks at the time of composition. In his writing, Hippocrates revealed the value of religion, provided a higher degree of humanism in medicine, and displayed the clashes between modern social
When people think of ancient cultures and civilizations, they don’t think about the kind of influences they might have had on our society. One of those cultures having the most influence being Ancient Greece. The Ancient world of Greece is far from ancient in the arts, philosophies, ideas, architectures, governments, religions, and everyday life of the people in the latter half of the twentieth century. Come, discover and explore the civilization that forms the foundation of human history. Come, step into the ancient past.
Some of the most famous philosophers have come from ancient Greece. These people founded theories on how to solve all sorts of difficult problems, so naturally the ancient Greeks created a very effective way to solve problems: through myths. These myths had morals, which taught people lessons that they could apply to their own life. These lessons could then be used to solve problems. People always have problems, however, they have dealt with them differently throughout time. All methods of solving problems are somewhat effective, but some of them are better than the others. Since people have all had similar issues from the beginning of time such as cheating, jealousy, and war it makes it easy to connect one method to another. Ancient Greek myths can help modern people solve many problems, from sub-par education systems to gender inequality.
Ancient Greece developed many things like architecture and political systems, which greatly influence our lives nowadays, but there are some aspects that we had to improve such as the Olympics. The ancient Greeks developed a system of orders which were known as columns. These columns were beautiful both structurally and appearance wise. The columns were put into use by creating ancient temples. Because of religion there was always a meaning behind the design of the temple. Because the ancient Greeks developed this, it has influenced architects nowadays to design buildings based on the original structure and the many details in the building just like the Greeks. The most beautiful buildings in our era are the ones which have hints of history and respect the ancient designs. The Greeks also invented democracy which allowed people to vote for the rights of their state. This was done in order to keep the state in order. People were allowed to vote on the best person to be in charge of their state, most of the state would be happy with the decision made for their state. It has greatly impacted our lives nowadays as on the news there is commonly a
One reason I believe that Greece is better is because they have given us great things when it comes to entertainment. First, they gave us the Olympics and this is an event that most countries around the world are involved in still to this day. Every 4 years it bring most of the countries around the world together to play games. It promotes peace through the games because they are brought together to have fun and play games. The soul purpose of the Olympics was to bring countries together, get more money, and provide more jobs. To this day countries are still brought together for these games. Also, I believe that Greece is better because of literature. Because of them we have books and movies wouldn’t be in the context that they are in. The people of Ancient Greece created productions of drama like epics and plays. Some of the epics were “The Iliad” and “the Odyssey”. Some epics that you might know are Harry Potter, The Percy Jackson Series, and The Lord of the Rings. If it wasn’t for the Ancient Greeks we would not have this stuff today. Lastly, they had one of the best philosophers of their time. Aristotle was one the top philosophers of Ancient Greece. The are estimated to be about 200 pieces of his work but most of his stuff was notes and manuscript drafts. Aristotle's work ended up
