Document 6 shows a very popular style of Grecian architecture, the column or pillar, this style of architecture influenced worldly architecture as columns are found in architecture all over the world. The column or pillar has influenced the style of many political building in the U.S., such as the White House, The Lincoln Memorial and The Capitol Building, all containing columns in the front. In more modern architecture, columns can be seen in millions of homes and business buildings. Columns have become an extremely common form of architectural design among the world. Greece made social contributions to the world with their value towards athletes in sports, and their development of the Olympics and Olympic events. As shown in Document 7, is a sculpture of a man participating in a discus contest. In the sculpture, is shown a man holding a discus which was an event created and held in Ancient Grecian Olympics. The Ancient Greeks had influenced western civilization in the form of competitive sports competitions evolving into the modern Olympics which is now an important part of western and worldly culture. The ancient Greeks also valued their Olympics athletes almost as gods. The Athenians built many important building using long structures called columns, such as in the Parthenon (seen in document seven). These can be seen in many buildings across America, such as the Stock exchange and the Lincoln memorial. Another example of Athenian Art was the Olympics. Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.

Starting in 509 B.C.E and lasting until 476 C.E (Ancient Rome and the Rise of Christianity, 1000 BCE–500 CE,). Ancient Rome started off as a small town on central Italy’s Tiber river and ended up expanding all the way to most Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, Northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands (Ancient Rome). Ancient Rome helped spread many languages, the western alphabet, the modern calendar and the religion of christianity all around the globe (Ancient Rome). Socrates and Aristotle were both Greek philosophers who contributed philosophies. Socrates believed that all people contained real knowledge within them and that self critical examination was needed to bring this knowledge out. Socrates once stated, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” In this philosophical idea, Socrates is suggesting that an individual, who chooses to not think about their own actions, does not truly care about their own life. Aristotle believed in the concept of examining individual objects and being able to perceive their form and establish universal principles. Greece influenced roman societies and modern day societies politically as explained in documents 1, 2, 4, and 6. Greece was the first ancient civilization to have a democracy. The basic rule for roman society law system was displayed in the twelve tables. (Doc 2) Many western civilizations adapted this law system as well as other ideas from the roman 12 tables which influenced western societies immensely. The document explains a quote that we still use in modern society which is “every man is innocent until proven guilty.” Octavian Augustus states that after he dies “the foundations which I have laid for its future government will stand firm and stable” the Greeks invented an idea of a ruling senate which today is known as democracy. Albeit Rome embraced and developed some characteristics of Greek culture, they still made prominent contributions of their own.
