The 25 minute Magic Bullet infomercial is full of persuasion in many aspects. Throughout my paper I will highlight how the commercial uses Ranks Model of Persuasion, starting with the intensify and downplay strategies that I observed from watching the Magic Bullet Commercial. The strategies and tactics that the persuaders used worked well, by the end of the commercial I wanted the product they advertised. Throughout my paper I will go more in depth to Rank’s Model of persuasion by analyzing, explaining, and providing examples from the Magic Bullet infomercial. There are two main strategies of Rank’s model, intensify and downplay.
Rank’s intensify model strategy is where the persuader intensifies the positive aspects of their campaign or they focus on the negative aspects of a competitor’s product or campaign. Included in the intensify portion of Rank’s model there are 3 tactics, repetition, association, and composition. These are 3 simple tactics that are used frequently in persuasive material. Repetition includes recurring themes, such as jingles and slogans. Association is where the persuasive material links positive or negative ideas to the advice they are giving to consumers. Composition is the graphic, layout, and design of the persuasive material. In the Magic bullet commercial all three of these aspects of the intensify model were present. (Larson, 2013) Throughout the Magic Bullet commercial the Magic Bullet logo appears on the screen frequently. This is the
Television advertisements have been a part of pop culture for years, these quick minute long clips gain the popularity of its viewers through humor, shock, or simply good salesmanship. The ShamWow infomercial has become one the most well known television ads in America. Its popularity came from its snappy dialogue, believable offer, and enthusiastic spokesman. But what made this infomercial so successful? Today I will be analyzing how the ineffective use of the appeals of ethos and kairos, and the highly effective appeal of logos and pathos effect the audience in the ShamWow commercial.
Advertising is a complicated form of marketing, it’s almost like an art form. One must be acutely aware of their audience and what captures their attention, otherwise the advertisement will fall flat. There is a myriad of different ways to lure consumers into buying a product; for example, the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) managed through a series of advertisements to convince individuals of the importance in getting a vaccination for the influenza virus. It was applied using multiple techniques, namely the methods of universal appeal and association. These techniques helped the CDC to effectively promotes the flu vaccine and get their message across to a wide range of people.
Thus, by creating appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos, companies use advertisements as powerful persuasive tools. This can be done through the careful selection of color, imagery, narration, design, and layout, to name a few significant elements. When used correctly, these rhetorical strategies can make the difference between whether a product or idea is embraced or rejected by the
Today, one can see the tactic of persuasion being used as a standard avenue to influence a person’s attitude or beliefs by presenting them with different messages that encourage things like using certain brand name products, vote a certain way, or where to take a vacation just to name a few. There are four types of people that include gullible people, skeptical people, firm believers, and people who are leaders who trust others as well as make others follow their ideas. Persuasion is a widespread topic of social psychology and may be done in different ways. There are two types of cognitive processes by which to persuade someone, which are the central route or the peripheral route. For this assignment I used mostly the central route approach as well as using a little of the peripheral route approach. To reinforce the peripheral route approach the use of pathos was also used during the video to play on the emotions of the watcher. This PowerPoint is effective at using the central route of persuasion, peripheral
Over the years, it is apparent that adverts in general have adapted their advertising language by employing extensive methods of persuasion, instead of focusing on their actual product or purpose.
Over the last few decades, American culture has been forever changed by the huge amount of advertisement the people are subjected to. Advertising has become such an integral part of society, many people will choose whether or not they want to buy a product based only on their familiarity with it rather than the product’s price or effectiveness. Do to that fact, companies must provide the very best and most convincing advertisements as possible. Those companies have, in fact, done
If it has been identified that the central route of persuasion on an audience is necessary due to high relevance to the persuasive message, this gives the persuader a framework to begin crafting a strong argument. Since relevance is what captures the audience’s attention, the persuader must exploit this. For example, if the persuader is attempting to sell a car to an individual the the use of the central route, and the potential buyer has been categorized as one that clearly understands the relevance of the purchase, the persuader should do his or her best to make their product seem the most relevant to the customer. The seller may do this by asking the customer to visualize how happy they will be in their new car. This can also be done by highlighting the features of the car that are most applicable to the customer’s concerns (safety, high gas mileage, etc). These methods will invite the receiver to become more involved with the target of persuasion. All of these ways utilize the customer’s judgment of high relevance to the situation to construct a strong argument.
In the film, “The Persuaders”, the documentary analyzes the advertising and marketing industry and how marketers have developed new ways of integrating their message into the fabric of our everyday lives. The film further explores how marketing and advertising shapes the way Americans understand the world and themselves and how the techniques of the persuasion industries have migrated to politics. In the following essay, I will describe interesting points about the marketing industry and what this information has revealed about myself as well as describing brands I identify as love-marks and why I am devoted to these brands.
In order to attract a specific demographic, advertisement companies employ diverse methods of persuasion. Corporations such as Wendy’s hire advertisement agencies for their expertise in how to attract target audiences to their products. Wendy’s advertisement campaign for ‘Where’s the Beef?’ integrates a few different methods of persuasion; credibility, similarity with the target, and likeability. Wendy’s is trying to entice the 16-40 age demographic of Americans. By incorporating these methods of persuasion to attract the aforementioned target age demographic, Wendy’s is anticipating to attract new customers, consequently increasing profitability.
The magazine that this add has been placed in is also tailored towards the same target market.
The message conveyed through the advertising appeals influences the purchasing decisions of consumers. In this case, the advertisement was aired by Carl’s Jr fast food restaurant to advertise their new “all natural burger”. It was aired during the Super bowl because majority of the audience, men and woman, are watching the game. And it makes it easy for them to put their product out because most people that watch the Super bowl just watch the commercials.
Persuasion is a part of our everyday lives. Whether we are persuading our mother, using persuasion through speech, or threw advertisements, we are using rhetoric strategies to get the response we desire. With the help of minor details in many advertisements, Ethos, Logos, and Pathos are a way of persuading the audience to buy or think a certain way. A Colgate toothbrush commercial used Logos, Pathos and Ethos to spread the word that they have the best toothbrush of all, in which they target everyone who has teeth. Through the use of advertisements, Colgate has convinced the world that they have the best toothbrushes, they’re even recommended by dentists.
Petty and Cacioppo (1981) have developed the elaboration likelihood model of persuasion which explains the peripheral route to persuasion and the central route. In the peripheral route, persuasive influences are more tangential to the issues at hand. For egg- in a PSA targeted against smoking in youth, the peripheral route will show the teenagers having a better sex life after quitting smoking. (William G. Shadel, January 2009) Central processing occurs when the person at hand is aware about the main message of the PSA and is motivated to consider its content. We will analyze the use of celebrities for both these routes of persuasion and try to find out the effectiveness in each case.
Advertising is a persuasive communication attempt to change or reinforce one’s prior attitude that is predictable of future behavior. We are not born with the attitudes for which we hold toward various things in our environment. Instead, we learn our feelings of favorability or unfavorability through information about the object through advertising or direct experience with the object, or some combination of the two. Furthermore, the main aim of advertising is to ‘persuade’ to consumer in order to generate new markets for production.
likely to discount a healthy claim because of its potential manipulative intent, however, it is not certain that a healthy promotional strategy also will be more effective
