The movie, I Am Sam is about a single father who has a developmental disability and who has an IQ of a seven-year-old who wants and tries to take care of his baby daughter. He had his daughter, Lucy with a homeless woman and she left Sam just after she had her. There are some complications and then he loses her through court because people convince him he could not give her the love she deserved. The article online and the movie were the same. In many people’s opinion, books are better than the movies but I feel the opposite way. I like to watch the movies and see all the emotion and drama visually and not comprehensively. The lesson or purpose of the movie is to have people learn or to teach people that all people need is love. It is also …show more content…
Audiologists mainly work with individuals who have balance, hearing, or other ear problems. They try and diagnose what the individual has and both professions will have the individuals have appointments with them to see if they can help them out in any way they can. Personally, I loved the movie, I Am Sam. I loved how it portrayed someone who has developmental disabilities and what some issues they run into in their life. I liked how dramatic and emotional the movie was. When a movie is emotional like this one, it makes the audience pay attention more and wonder what happens in the end so it makes them finish the movie or book. I liked how it showed the problems or issues Sam had trying to take care of Lucy. It broke my heart when she said, she did not want to read the word because her dad could not read it. She did not want to be smarter than her father which I thought was amazing. The director did a fantastic job writing this film. All of the points he wanted to get to the audience, I feel did. The actor, Sean Paul, did a wonderful job impersonating someone with a developmental disability. The director’s goal was to have people that were his targeted audience, try and think about what they take for granted and show that people need love and support just as much as anyone else that is important to them. People never know what other stories other people have and are going through. It is always nice to be kind and to be a supportive human being. There were a couple parts I
Ultimately the book was fantastic but the movie wasn’t as far as good in my personal opinion. It was one of the best books I’ve had ever read. At first it goes slow but as you get to know the characters and the plot you get addicted to the book and can’t stop reading in a good
The acting gives the story much personality and is really convincing. The most incredibly played character is Oskar, because he is such a complex child and it’s really hard to make him not stereotypical because he has Autism. The actors really made the story come to live.
Lastly, I will now discuss the emotional, mental, and spiritual reactions I personally had about the movie. I felt very saddened over the loss of Graham’s wife because I could not even begin to know how awful it would be to lose a spouse. I also found it very sad to watch the children deal with the loss of their mother. The moment at the dinner
In conclusion, I believe the movie had a wonderful way of inspiring children that no matter what their disability is, whether they are deaf, have autism, are visually impaired, so on and so forth, they can do anything they put their mind to. I really enjoyed the way the movie included emotions into explaining the disability at hand. It shows many realities of being hearing impaired. The movie would be great for children to watch and grow empathy for those who are different at a young
My views on this heart moving film would be never to give up in life, and with the right amount of determination you can succeed anything. The film tells us the simple, but moving story with a skilled storyteller's voice. The great importance of their
The name of the film selected for this case study is I am Sam. (2002) The protagonist of the film is Sam Dawson, who is played by the actor Sean Penn. Sam Dawson is a developmentally or intellectually challenged adult male, who has a young daughter, primary school aged, named Lucy. Sam and Lucy live together without her mother, who is a homeless person. There is not extensive information provided in the film regarding Sam's upbringing, but based on his present situation, he is a well adjusted person in a middle class atmosphere. It seems he has enough assets to provide for himself and his daughter in a fairly independent basis. His daughter, Lucy, is happy and taken care of, but the tension begins when Lucy exceeds Sam's mental capacity. Her peers ridicule her and her father because of his intellectual deficiencies, calling him a "retard." The character's family consists of Lucy primarily, and some of Sam's other disabled friends who all help each other. One of Sam's greatest and most prominent "likes" is that he is a huge fan of the band The Beatles. One of his strengths is his love for his daughter. Another strength, although it is perceived as a weakness by others who might prey on him, is that he goes through life with a sense of awe and naivete. Of course, this is a result of his disability, but even still, he could have
Personally, I believe that the film was an example of responsible media pertaining to the communication disabilities presented. The characters were all realistic and
I am Sam is a 2001 American drama film written and directed by Jessie Nelson, starring Sean Penn as Sam who has an intellectual disability that had sole care for his daughter Lucy Diamond played by Dakota Fanning. The two of them encounter problems with the Department of Child and Family Services as they believe the presence of Sam’s intellectual disability negates his ability to parent. A lawyer Rita Harrison played by Michelle Pfeiffer plays an important role in this film as she is the only one to have belief in Sam’s ability to parent. This M rated film has won awards such as the Stanley Kramer award for their ability to place an emphasis on social concerns. People with disabilities are often discriminated against the rest of society as a result of their impairments. Jessie Nelson’s use of mis-en-scene and semiotic elements engage the members of the audience to position them to have their own perspective of Sam’s situation as presented.
The difficulties faced today in society by those with serious intellectual disabilities are very large hurdles faced by many in today 's world. These disabilities along with the pressure to remain independent question how we deal with those intellectually challenged individuals. The film, I Am Sam details the struggle of Sam Dawson- a man living with mild intellectual disabilities- and his fight to maintain custody of his young daughter. This film details many different important psychological principles that are taught and studied in modern psychology. These principles are brought up and make us question the validity and extent of principles that are held sacred in the psychological world today.
In the movie ,The human experience, is 3 differents experiences from homeless to abused children and many african people being sick. The experience the young man went through can really change how someone feels and change their mind set. This helps society a little by seeing other peoples point of view and how their is people who have it worst and we should value life and how we need to find who we are. We find healing and forgiveness by loving our self by valuing life how it is and making the best of it. We need to find our self to forgive and to heal to know that life is a treasure. We do mistakes and learn but sometimes we should have our feet in the ground and appreciate everything we have and the people that surround us because everyone is valuable.
My initial reaction to the film itself was quite positive. Before watching the movie, it wasn’t positive. The story line, when I had read about the topic, seemed repetitive. I didn’t want to hear and see the same things over and over again. I had thought that that was what this movie was going to be. But going and watching the whole thing, and getting to see a different part of the story, was very interesting and I ended up liking it much more than I had thought at first.
The individuals involved in the interview are a man diagnosed with Autism (subject S) and a female lawyer (subject R). They are connected through a professional-helping relationship. The incidents leading up to the interview are with regards to a custody battle concerning subject S and his seven year old daughter. His doctors have declared that the intellectual capacity of subject S does not exceed the age of seven. The issue arises when Child Protective Services deem subject S unfit and incapable of raising his daughter due to the fact that he is unable to hold down a steady job and that his daughter will eventually
The actors are believable in their roles. Steven Martin who acts as George Banks is outstanding in his role, he acts very well, so the audience knows his feelings, and feels sorry for him. The stars are not the main reason for me to see the film, but the title is.
I Am Sam is the compelling story of Sam Dawson (Sean Penn), a mentally-challenged father raising his daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) with the help of an extraordinary group of friends. As Lucy turns seven and begins to intellectually surpass her father, their close bond is threatened when their situation comes under the scrutiny of a social worker who wants Lucy placed in foster care.
Another reason why I think this movie is such a great, inspirational movie is because of how a woman with autism can accomplish something so inspiring that shows people with autism shouldn’t be viewed as someone who can’t do much or someone who doesn’t have the skills and knowledge to do what normal people can. Temple Grandin has probably made a big difference in what people think of ones who have autism and I think that is great. Just because a person has autism doesn’t necessarily mean that people don’t have autism should view them as someone lower than themselves. People with autism are only stronger-willed and even though they may have difficulty with life, Temple Grandin shows that it doesn’t matter if you have autism or not because you can achieve your goals, you just need that determination in your life. From this movie, I have learned that no matter how small other people may think of you, you have the
