African Americans During The Civil War

Have you ever fought for something you believed in? There was a war where many states that were fighting for their rights and what they believed in. They all had different opinions, but many states fought together to become stronger. Texans fought in the Civil War because their love for Texas and their family, for states’ rights, and to protect the slaves.

Beginning in 1861, the civil war was fought over many political questions regarding slavery, yet was barely focused on the actual freedom of the slaves themselves. It is often taught that the Union fought for the freedom of slaves at the beginning of the war. However, it is more accurate to say that Abraham Lincoln’s primary goal at the beginning of the war was to reunite the Union after the majority of the slave-owning states seceded to protect their way of life: slavery. Yet, by the end of the war, the Union’s goal was to free the slaves. Though the laws securing slaves freedom and suffrage were contributed to by many, the primary driving forces behind them was the African Americans. Through their willingness to fight and support the Union cause, African Americans made the United States acknowledge their struggles and transformed the war into a fight for reconnection and freedom. Though hindered by racist people and policies, the African Americans’ participation during the war and Reconstruction greatly contributed to tremendous cultural change as well as the securing of legal rights to blacks.

Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letter, U.S., let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pocket, there is no power on earth that can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship.

African-Americans in the Civil war were not treated with respect. They were slaves to white people, and to me that's not right. During the Civil war they worked on plantations owned by rich white people. Some were nice and some were harsh. Most people treated African-Americans like dirt. People would trade, sell, and buy them and they were sometimes taken away from they're family.

With the various ways slavery was spread throughout the geography of the United States, these variations formed different cultures and conflicting laws on slavery. Due to inconsistent systems of slavery, it resulted in the Civil War, dividing the North and the South over the issues of slavery. In the end of the Civil War, many individuals with every sense of positive intentions gave opportunities and support to freed slaves developing into beneficial members for the nation. The United States came together as a nation to solve the issues of slavery, freedom, and the reorganization problems particular to African Americans. It is seen throughout our history all efforts to solve these issues but sadly African Americans still face many of the these problems today. These problems and issues of the 20th century needed to be solved by the leadership of African Americans, for their African American community. W.E.B Du Bois is a tremendous example of an African American leader for what was best for the United States at that time.

Thesis: During the civil war, race was a huge matter. African Americans were treated differently just because of their skin color. The North was fighting for the African Americans freedom while the south kept them as prisoners. There was a lot done to and for the African Americans.

About 180,000 African American people comprised 163 units that served in the Union Army, during the time of the Civil War, and many more African American people had served in the Union Navy. Both the free African-Americans and the runaway slaves had joined the fight. On the date of July 17, in the year of 1862, the U. S. Congress had passed two very important acts that would allow the enlistment of many African Americans, but the official enrollment had occurred only after the September, 1862, issuance of the, Emancipation Proclamation. In general, most white soldiers and officers, had believed that most of the black men, who had served in the Civil War, lacked the courage, and the will to fight

They were freed when Lincoln said the words of the Emancipation Proclamation. After that they were persecuted and prejudiced by the people of the South who kept a firm grasp on their beliefs. Before that, African Americans born in the antebellum South, and brought there, were slaves to white masters. Some slaves lived a good, enjoyable life, some lived through neverending pain, some were average and spent their days being invisible, but slaves are an important part of the history of the United States, and the lives of those who lived through slavery should not be ignored.

During this time African Americans served as an underlying issue to the civil war but personally there seemed to be little apprehension about their actual development and progression in society. Initially, Negroes’ attitudes and contributions to the Civil War and their desire for freedom were major factors in their struggle with white America. Obviously, there were various circumstances that described African American lifestyles; being broken down to North vs. South or Freed slaves vs. Slaves, but the main

After the Civil War ended laws were passed making owning slaves illegal, but most people were not very happy about them. After these wars were passed many bitter Southern states still treated African Americans very poorly. Many actions were taken by the South to try and make African Americans seem less like human beings, and more like animals from laws to secret societies.

The Civil War acted as the catalyst for change for African Americans. The war was fought between the Northern States (Union) and Southern States (Confederates) of the United States. The war was fought on many fronts, one of which was how to deal with slavery. The North advocated for total eradication and the South wanted to retain their slave ownership. The North prevailed and “President Abraham Lincoln offered his conciliatory plan for reunification of the United States with his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction.” This victory held special significance for the African Americans as it signaled the start of a new era.

During the birth of the Moorish Science Temple of America, the south was home to the racial discrimination, segregation, and the Jim Crow laws. This made it nearly impossible for Blacks to function properly in the south. Being intimidated, brutalized, and murdered, blacks were struggling to stay clear of the racism that controlled the south. Jobs was hard to come by. Some black southerners were forced to work as part of the sharecropping system.1 Barely any opportunities ascended during these harsh times but these conditions would soon come to past for many black southerners.

Concluding Statement: So in conclusion, African American slaves had hard lives and suffered a lot through slavery and the Civil War.

After the Civil war their were some black soldiers. Since the war was over these soldiers helped fight the Indians in the west. They were called buffalo soldiers. The army combined some of the black infinites to make bigger infinities such as the 38th and 41st infantry turning into the 24th otr the 39th and the 40th making the 25th. Since they fought Indians they had gained some respect. These solider were good, but some could not take it. In most regiments their was a desertion rate of 25%/. They fought in New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. There was also black silvery.

The Civil War was fought between the North and the South. The war started over many issues, such as slavery. In 1865, the United States defeated the Confederate States and slavery was abolished. This did not prevent segregation and African-Americans from being mistreated. Blacks are still fighting for equal rights even today.
