APA Refresher Assignment This APA refresher assignment is designed to re-familiarize the student with the American Psychological Association’s (APA) style (APA, 2010). This paper will contain practice elements of the major components of a professional academic paper. These include: document formatting, setting up margins, proper header placement, title, reference to text, citing personal communications, and other selected items. This paper will also allow us an opportunity to be critiqued and allow feedback for future paper writing success. There will be a review of plagiarism. It has allowed me to learn some new formatting and reference techniques. I received a personal communication discussing the challenges of writing and citing in APA format. From this discussion, I learned “there are now ways of citing social media sites like Facebook and Twitter?” E. Charkalis (personal communication, September 9, 2015). She included a reference for my review. Plagiarism Plagiarism is a concern for academic honesty and personal integrity. When I was an undergrad in the late 1980’s, repositories of papers were kept in an academic department to aid in plagiarism detection. Plagiarism was evaluated by a Professor recognizing particular work and being forced to ask a student for validity of original thought. Almost every student has been there: staring at his/her computer trying to get an assignment done when they have twenty other obligations swinging over his/her head. Students are trying to find the fastest and easiest way to get the assignment completed. Many students will plagiarize intentionally or unintentionally at some point of their educational career. As one begins to grasp the concept of Schroth’s (2012) article The Plagiarism Plague, it is easy to identify the author’s dissatisfaction for plagiarism and the negative connotations he has for someone who is involved in this heinous offense. He initiates and summarizes his commentary with personal stories of how plagiarism has affected him. Schroth offers several solutions for the copyright issue that is upon us; he states, “the sanction for plagiarism must be at least an F on the paper, accompanied by a letter in the student's file to be consulted if it happens again, with the understanding that a second offense would mean expulsion.” Schroth was also sure to mention the collective approach necessary from all educators for his solution to be implemented. He believes the “policy will be effective only with leadership from the president and full cooperation from the faculty.” The writer goes on to explain how plagiarism has become an epidemic in this society and the effects of its prevalence thereof. Although plagiarism has become rampant in this society, it is still immoral and unethical. College students continue to plagiarize however, because they refuse to regard their education as a top priority and it has become culturally acceptable for people to falsify information without any serious penalties for their dishonesty.
Four APA formatting resources are reviewed here. The American Psychological Association (2009) publishes the authoritative work on APA formatting, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition. This book is a style manual for academic writers and editors in the behavioral and social sciences and covers the topics of plagiarism, manuscript organization, writing style, displaying tables and figures, references, citations, and the publication process. The first printing contains seven pages of corrections that are downloadable from www.apa.org. The writing style guide is helpful, as is the section on citations and references. Electronic references examples are few and other resources should be consulted.
This weeks assignment was tough for me also , I am having trouble remembering how to correctly follow the APA format. Being an honest person with high expectations and educational goals, I will strive to correctly give the author credit for their work. The idea of writing down your thoughts before starting a paper could be helpful in your research. I also agree with you that if professional writers have problems with correctly citing their research work, then we as new students must strive to progress in our academic journey.

Initially, the author establishes plagiarism as a major problem on college campuses. Because previous approaches for dealing with plagiarism have been unsuccessful, many professors have turned to electronic software like Turnitin to identify student plagiarism (Blum 1). This means colleges and professors are desperate to find a solution to the increasing problem of plagiarism. I think I got it, you see I was thinking that you wanted us to label on our thesis assignment which reference was primary and secondary, but if I read the assignment right and not pay attention to the grading rubric like I was doing, you will be able to know which one of our references are primary and secondary. But, if that is incorrect, then do you wish for us to title on the reference page which is the primary and secondary for easy understanding? Moreover, it offers innovative ways for teachers and students to learn. Teachers use the Internet for assignments, test taking and board discussions. For instance, in the George Brown College professors use smart board which promote collaboration and enhance instruction. Also, the Internet increases the quality of our life in many ways. For example, we use it to video chat with family that are far away and to shop from our homes. The Internet makes our lives more convenient and easy. However, the availability of the Internet has also led to increased plagiarism. Some students prefer to use the ready information in the Internet instead of spending time for research and analysing original information. Hence, they turned to plagiarism. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “plagiarism” as “the act of using another person’s ideas without giving credit to that person”. The Oxford dictionary includes in its definition of plagiarism, not only taking the words or ideas of another, but also “passing them off as one’s own”. Easy access to the Internet has made plagiarism a rapidly growing problem in education system. Easy access to the Internet and an endless amount of information online makes an environment for plagiarism. Students find it easy to find, download, and copy the information. The Internet provides useful information for a student under heavy outside pressure to finish assignments by a due date. One study in the United States covering around 18,000 students from 23 universities showed that some 40% of students acknowledged committing plagiarism by copying, formalizing, and cutting and pasting (Talab, 2004, p.15).

Students do not know that copying from Wikipedia, which may contain no author, is plagiarizing if the work is not cited. With the use of technology and easy access to answers or completed essays, original work sounds too complicated for students who would rather spend their time doing more enjoyable things such as going to basketball or football games and parties. However, this behavior must stop and more needs to be done to educate students about copying.
