A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin Earthsea, a vast archipelago, is a place filled with magical wonders that are only myth to the human world, and it is here where the story takes place. First, we have Ged the protagonist of the story. Ged in the beginning of the book was an easily tempered, impatient young man. Even so he was always eager to learn new things. However, as the story progressed Ged learns to become more humble, patient, and low-tempered. Next is Ged’s ‘shadow’, a creation of Ged’s ignorance. The ‘shadow’ has no shape, and after Ged brought it form an unknown realm, it almost killed Ged. Last but not least is Vetch, a very good friend of Ged’s. However, there is no specified time in which the story takes place. Furthermore, there are many events that happened that influence how the story is to take place. First of all, there is the exposition, which is the very beginning of the story where characters are introduced. It is here that we discover that Ged’s first name is Duny, and that Ged’s mother died less than a year after he was born. Next is the rising action, but many things could be considered as the rising action in this story as well as many others. Examples of rising action in this story would be the time Ged, as an twelve year old, scared off the karg army, the time Ged summoned the ‘shadow’ that severely injured him, or even when Ged’s pet was killed. The climax of any story is the point of the story where the most suspense is felt, this is usually where the biggest conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist happens. The climax of the story would be where Ged, accompanied by Vetch, chases his ‘shadow’ towards the sea where there is nothing but seawater, but he ends up on a sandy beach, an illusion created by the ‘shadow’. Afterwards comes the falling action of a story, if the story has one. The falling action of the story is when Ged’s ‘shadow’ disappeared, meaning the sandy beach disappeared, and Vetch saves his friend, Ged, from drowning.
