A COMPARATIVE STUDY ABOUT THE REFERENCE SECTION OF THE THREE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN KOLKATA: STUDY MADE BY NABANITA MUKHERJEE, LIBRARIAN OF SUKANTANAGAR VIDYANIKETAN (H.S.).
INTRODUCTION
Background
The reference section of university libraries may be considered as the heart of the library as it provides ready reference sources and instant reference services to the users. The reference sections of University Libraries seek to promote a reference collection development program in concert with the University’s curriculum and users’ needs. Though most of the university libraries have a very large and useful reference collection but regular use of those collections is not possible due to lack of user awareness about the reference collection of the libraries. Therefore the library professional should orient the reference section in an attractive manner and should also organize information literacy programme so that the user become able to make the best use of the collection. In the era of 21st century, Reference service has shifted its paradigm from asking help of the library professional at the Reference desk to get on-line Reference services like Ask-a-librarian through mobile phone, e-mail, online chat, sms , RSS feed etc. Therefore it is very much needed to provide reference service in an excellent way with the help of properly selected printed and non-printed materials as well as modern information and communication technologies.
O: Get Organized-Organize your thoughts and ask yourself questions, once you do this then you can use keywords to help you find what you are looking for in the library, keywords are words that would likely show up in titles of an articles or books. Then make a list of words or phrases that will help you when you are researching.
Working in any organization where there is lack of help, time, and supplies can be quite challenging for employees and management. This seems to the dilemma that these three reference librarians where having. Within this case study there seems to be frustration with the current working conditions, especially the technological support that is needed. The reference librarians find it challenging to complete their jobs when they have to consistently assist in computer problems, leaving the reference desk unattended.

Students aren’t limited to a local physical library. With technology, students have several sources of information in various formats such as books, articles, newspapers, videos, and much more.
After reading chapters 9, 10, and 11, I believe the librarian profession will evolve to meet the demands of the public and technology. Also, I think technological advancements will enhance the role of the librarians. With the advent of new technology, the quality and the accessibility of information will only improve. Lastly, changes in technology and how libraries organize and collect data will have a positive impact on the library field. Arthur, M.A. & Dotson, L. (2009).

There are an almost 120,000 libraries in America. Each display of instruction within and through academic libraries was built on the outline of previous systems: library orientation, bibliographic instruction, and information literacy. For the time period each methodology served, learners were introduced to new concepts, new knowledge, and new skills through which new knowledge was constructed. (Shanbhag, 2006) argued that the current practice of information literacy instruction failed to provide learners with the ability to create new methods and applications for producing knowledge as it was intended, instead, the same processes from decades before have been handed down and repackaged as a different approach. The researcher found that the support for such comments through. (Palmer, 1972) showed three decades earlier that
Through the years 2000 and 2005, the Topeka Public Library had a staff member named Melissa Robertson. She worked downstairs mostly, where her cubicle was filled with pictures of her and her daughter in various parks, laughing about various memories. There always seemed to be an empty tupperware pan, too. This pan had held the cinnamon rolls she brought for everyone every Friday, they were gone within minutes. The secret ingredient was instant mashed potato mix to make them fluffy, a fact that always confused her daughter.

For students to be adequately informed about the value of the university library and resources such as the Internet in information retrieval there must be a careful collaboration between teaching staff and library staff (Kenney, 2007). The focus in this task, of course, is preparing students not just for the immediate research project at hand but rather to prepare them to be life long learners, to prepare them to be successful and productive once they leave the academic environment and take up their chosen careers (Lauer & Yodanis, 2012).
