Antonio Correa Southern New Hampshire University HSE 325 2-2 Final Paper Milestone One
Introduction Child Welfare Issue For this project, the child welfare issue I would like to focus on is child abuse. In Module One, the case study I chose to reflect on was about family preservation services on page 241.. However, this case also involved the maltreatment of children where they were abused physically. There are many reasons I believe this topic is important and deserves awareness for both personal and factual reasons. In the United States, a child is abused every 47 seconds, approximately 5 children die every day of child abuse, and most children become victims of abuse at 18 months or younger ( CP, 2020). In my state of Connecticut, there were 13,500 cases of child abuse on 2021 (ACF, 2022). Although that number has gone down compared to the years prior, it’s still an outstanding number. The missions of the state and federal Departments of Health and Human Services have been adapted to include government programs that are aimed at protecting kids in high-risk families. The child welfare system, supported by federal, state, and local dollars, has offices throughout the entire nation. These local offices, usually referred to as Child Protective Services (CPS), investigate reports of maltreatment and confirm or reject them (Brookings, 2022). CPS’s mission is to identify, assess and provide services to children and families in an effort to protect children, preserve families, whenever possible, and prevent further maltreatment (CT.gov, 2018). The mission does have an impact on how the department services the children that are being abused. The CPS understands the importance of keeping a child with their family and the impact that can come from separation, because of this, the CPS may not only focus on the child but also help the family as a whole which essentially helps the child.
