PSY 211 Project Two Use this template to complete your life-span theory exploration paper. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 1. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the biological perspective . The first theorist that I will reflect on is Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917-2005). Bronfenbrenner conducted the Bioecological Systems theory. Which may also be regarded as the “contextual theory” (Sigelman and Rider 2017). This theory predicted that, “changes over the lifespan arise from ongoing transactions in which a changing organism and a changing environment affect one another (Newman and Newman 2016; Overton & Molenaar, 2015). The bioecological system is categorized into 5 models of development. The models are Microsystems, Mesosystems, Exosystem, Macrosystem and Chronosystem. Bronfenbrenner’s theory applies to the biological perspective because he initiated the proximal process. This format is the process of “recurring, reciprocal interactions between the individual and other people, objects or symbols that move development forward toward more effective functioning” (Bronfenbrenner & Ceci, 1994). Thus, allowing researchers to use a continuous foundational format into the study of the physical source of human functioning behavior and its responses. 2. Provide an example of how this biological perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. One example of Bronfenbrenner’s biological perspective approach that applies to my lived experience is the household I was raised in. One significant factor in Bronfenbrenner’s theory is the influential insight of our own development. This is part of 2
the microsystem, which is an “immediate physical and social environment in which the person interacts face-to-face with other people and influences and is affected by them”. Through my community I have developed positive biological characteristics. One thing that was embedded in me at an early age was examples of hard work. Between my great grandmother being a nurse, beautician, gardener, professional chef, full time parent and my great grand father being an electrician, community activist and a full-time parent as well, I was always surrounded with a strong ethical foundation. This taught me empathy, morals, communication, understanding, manners, and respect. One quote I remember from my great grandparents is, “Having manners and empathy will take you places money can’t go.” 3. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the psychological perspective . The second theorist I will identify is Jean Piaget (1950). Jean Piaget conducted the Cognitive Development theory. Piaget believed in constructivism. Constructivism is the process, “that children actively construct their own understandings of the world based on their interactions with it” (Sigelman and Rider, 2017). Piaget summarized four major periods of cognitive development, sensorimotor (birth-2 years), preoperational (2-7 years), concrete operations (7-11 years old), formal operations (11-12 years and older). The aspects of this theory relate to the psychological perspective during the formal operations stage. During this stage of development, we “are able to think more abstractly and hypothetically”. 4. Provide an example of how this psychological perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. 3
