2 Gender, Sexuality, and the Christian Worldview Adolescence comes with several changes in the life of young ones, both in mind and physical appearance, because of hormone fluctuations and puberty. During this stage, most children in the recent past tend to explore more about their sexual experimentation ( Poran, 2022) . The pop culture has expanded the definition and view of sexuality, introducing several sexual themes. The media has also intensified its representation of the various themes of sex, including asexual, intersex, gay, queer, transgender, bisexual, and lesbianism. Sexual representations from the media have helped adolescents to validate their feelings and perceived differences in sexual orientation. As a result, a standard modern adolescent is comfortable and enlightened enough to express their sexuality. This paper shall analyze a movie, including the synopsis in regard to gender identity, changes and challenges faced by the subject, support, and the influence of the Christian worldview. Character description This paper shall focus on the main character from the Netflix show called “Atypical.” A 14-year-old Casey Gardner is a brother to an autistic brother, who struggles with her sexual identity throughout the show. At the beginning of the show, Casey is seen having a romantic relationship with Evan Chapin. Later she gets transferred to a private school, where she falls in love with another person from a different gender - Izzie Taylor. Casey goes against the common belief that most LGBTQIA+ adolescents struggle with dating a person from the opposite gender. Instead, Casey develops a romantic relationship with both genders but experiences difficulties discovering her sexual identity.
3 During her early development stages, Casey lived a normal life. She was a hardworking marathoner and represented Scholl’s track team, and she scored average grades in class. However, as she developed into adolescence, she portrayed male-oriented characters and was commonly seen as a tomboy. She participated in male-dominated sports and preferred more masculine clothes. All through her childhood to adolescent development, she had her family’s backing and support. Her older brother, Sam, significantly impacted Casey’s adolescent development. Sam got much of the family’s attention and love because he suffered from an autistic disorder. However, Casey thought that she needed to do more to get their family’s attention and gain approval. Even with the feeling of being the second favorite child, she helped her brother whenever she could and did not show any resentment. Challenges and changes During the initial stages of the show, Casey dates Ivan and identifies as heterosexual. When she transfers to school, she finds a person with the common duty of looking after their siblings and falls in love with her. This represented a change in sexual identity for her, which proved to be a challenge throughout the show. She also struggled to restore her relationship with her mother, after she found her mother cheating on her dad. This incident made her start withdrawing from her family. At some point, Casey invites Izzy to their home for a sleepover, and they are caught kissing by her mother. In season 3, Casey advances her love and feelings for Izzy and starts ignoring Evan’s. at this point, Casey had not identified her sexuality yet because she wasn’t even sure about it. In the next season, she meets Abby, a family friend who is openly bisexual. Abby’s sexual identity becomes an eye-opener for Casey, as she discovers that it is okay to like both males and females and that she does not have to choose one. After interacting with Abby, she decided to adopt the bisexual identity. Casey feels more comfortable and
