Name: Substance Use Case Study (3 parts) Part 1 Directions: Read the following case study about Jahari. Select (highlight) 4 - 6 key points/situations in the story that were most influential in contributing to the outcome in the story. Case Study Here: Substance Use - Case Study Part 2 Directions: 1. In the chart below, input the key points/situations that you gathered (highlighted) from the story in the “Key Point/Situation” column (some are already provided, may change and adjust them to what you have found and want to talk about). 2. Next, analyze each key point/situation. Identify the specific “Contributing Risk Factors” that led to the progression of drug use. Specifically, consider the various people, personal beliefs, values, attitudes, and social norms within each situation that contributed to drug use (i.e. graduation, night shift, smoke breaks, etc.). 3. Then, label each contributing risk factor as an individual, relationship, community, or societal risk factor ( see example in first row below ). 4. Finally, complete the “Protective Factors/Prevention” column by identifying a prevention strategy for each of the four levels of the socioecological model (individual, interpersonal, community, society). *TIP: refer to information from yesterday’s assignment related to protective factors at each level. Case Study Analysis Key Point/ Situation Contributing Risk Factors Individual Relationship Community Society Protective Factors/Prevention Individual Relationship Community Society Example: Changing Shifts Example: Feel the pressure/need to make money (I) Wanting to feel close to peers/people his age (R) Association with new/different people (R) Making more money (I) Social norms/party mentality (S) Exposure/opportunity to use (C) Example: Communication with supervisor about schedule (I, R) Job policies (i.e. routine drug testing, scheduled mini breaks) Pay structure could eliminate the night being more profitable (C, S) Job change (I) Choose to socialize with non-work friends Socialize with older work friends, but set limits for own behavior (I) Communicate about limits to co workers (R, C) Laws about use of substances in the workplace (C, S) Programs or policies to help fund trade school (C,S)
Name: Smoke Breaks When he would often see his coworker hit a vape at work He found out marijuana in the vape pen chilled him out Even though they are his friends but he should report them because it’s unprofessional of people to smoke at work Weekend Parties Having sex without using protection while being high and drunk Jahari smoking a lots a weed and drinking lots of alcohol at parties he went to every weekend Ava should tell Jahari that they shouldn’t have sex while being high and drunk especially without any protection because it can impact her life for a long run if a mistake is made during sex If Jahari stop going to these parties and start focusing more on himself rather doing things that can affect him negatively Negative Influence (Dan) When Jahari’s close friend Dan said doing coke was not a big deal it influenced Jahari to think if he does this is wont impact him that much Using coke became part of Jahari weekend routine with Dan and his other coworker Jahari should have respond his friend for trying to illegally sell coke at his workplace Jahari should stick to his words on not trying out a new drug instead of listening to Dan influencing the bad choice he made, and now he does it every weekend End of Summer Party Everyone brings drugs and alcohol and raising temptation He knew he was going to wasted but still did it anyway and disputed the consequences he may face He should have never taken the drugs in the first place especially since he was already feeling bad in his stomach Instead of watching him get wasted, someone should have helped him out Part 3 Directions: Answer the following questions following today’s activity : 1. How would you describe Jahari’s experience? What would you say led him to use drugs? - He grew up in a place where drug usage was common, so he never heard anybody urge him not to use drugs. His school apparently did not inform him about the dangers of drug use. When he became older and more independent, he was surrounded by individuals who pushed him to experiment with substances such as cigarettes and marijuana. He was then urged to try harder drugs, which sent him into a downward spiral. Was it a single event or risk factor or were there multiple influences? Explain ( 3 sentences minimum). - His drug addiction appears to have been caused by a combination of factors. Not only was he exposed to it throughout his childhood, but the individuals he interacted with also affected his decisions on how to spend his time. For example, because he worked night shifts, he frequently spent time with people at night, and when they made plans, he did not want to be left out. His addiction was the result of a complex interplay of several circumstances.
