AY3002 ITEM 2 This observation can be done as much as teachers feel necessary. Identifying where children stand currently in their reading will help teachers plan for their success. Strengths of running record observational strategy is that they are time sensitive, they can be used for many different reasons, as well as they are very specific. On the flip side there are some challenges associated with running record observational strategies. Running records may make the person being tested feel like they are being watched, takes up a substantial amount of time to administer these observations. (2016) Wortham, S. C., & Hardin, B. J. (2016). Assessment in early childhood education (7th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson. ITEM 3 Anecdotal notes is an observational strategy that uses learning outcomes, child’s experience and information about current events of a child. Teachers usually figure out what they are looking to observe prior to, so that teachers know what they’re looking for. Teachers also figure out when to observe the child/ children. This helps children stay on target. (2002) Some strengths of anecdotal notes are the notes assists teachers with identifying students needs, behavior and learning patterns. In addition to that anecdotal notes also helps teachers plan activities. However, there are some disadvantages as well like anecdotal notes aren’t standardized and also the note depends on teachers memory and it could be biased. (2020) Wortham,Sue,C.&Hardin, Belinda.J.(2020).Assessment in early childhood education Learning Activity 2: Documentation Strategies for the Classroom - AY3002: Assessment Strategies and Methods (brightspace.com) ITEM 4 The critical role of documentation is understanding young children’s development and learning because it shows developmental progress. Proper documentation aids in presenting children’s individual development and learning by using the results of documentation. (2008) With anecdotal notes both of the critical roles will be able to be displayed. With anecdotal notes we are able to show where they need progress and where they are excelling. The same goes for teachers extending learning because by looking at what children need assistance in, teachers are able to create learning based upon that. Running records pretty much does the same thing. It is an on-going observation tool in which learning can be extended based upon results that were found. As well as children’s progress being documented clearly to see what children need more support in.
