Hello Class,
As a retailer in 2024, it is essential to seek out suppliers that not only provide
quality products at competitive prices but also offer added services and perks that can help mitigate risks and enhance overall efficiency within the supply chain. For example:
Proactive Risk Management: An excellent provider ought to have effective risk management policies in place to predict and respond to any interruptions, such as those caused by natural disasters, pandemics, geopolitical difficulties, and other similar occurrences. Additionally, they should be able to provide real-time updates on any potential problems and collaborate with the merchant to build backup plans in the event of an emergency.
Advanced Technology Integration: Increasing the visibility and transparency of their supply chain activities can be accomplished by suppliers through the utilization of cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, blockchain, and data analytics. Retailers can use this to their advantage by monitoring production processes, tracking inventory levels, and identifying any bottlenecks or inefficiencies of their operations.
Sustainable Practices: In 2024, both consumers and retailers will be placing a
significant emphasis on ethical and environmentally responsible sourcing practices. Good suppliers should demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by implementing methods that are friendly to the environment,
lowering carbon emissions, limiting waste, and ensuring that fair labor practices are followed throughout their supply chain.
Value-Added Services: The ability of suppliers to provide value-added services, such as just-in-time delivery, vendor-managed inventory, supply chain optimization, and customization choices, can assist retailers in streamlining their operations and increasing the level of pleasure experienced by their customers. These services have the potential to improve flexibility, cut down on lead times, and lower the expenses associated with carrying inventory.
Collaboration and Communication: Effective communication and coordination
between retailers and suppliers are two of the most important factors that contribute to the success of a partnership. In addition to being responsive to inquiries, suppliers should also provide regular updates on the status of orders and delivery timelines, and they should take proactive measures to remedy any problems that may emerge. Communicating openly can assist in
the development of trust, the enhancement of transparency, and the cultivation of long-term partnerships.
Continuous Improvement: The commitment to innovation and constant improvement is a quality that should be present in a good supplier. Their proactive approach to recognizing possibilities to improve product quality, streamline operations, decrease costs, and react to shifting market conditions is something that they should take into consideration. To maintain
a competitive advantage, retailers can benefit from suppliers who make investments in research and development to remain ahead of trends in the market.
Overall, in 2024, retailers should look for suppliers that not only meet their basic product requirements but also offer added value through advanced services, sustainable practices, technology integration, and a commitment to
collaboration and continuous improvement. Through the formation of partnerships with suppliers whose values and interests are congruent with their own, retailers are able to construct a supply chain that is robust, responsive, and sustainable, and which is also well-equipped to deal with the
problems that are presented by the global marketplace.

Review the following hypothetical scenario and answer the following question:
We are increasingly concerned about Over-the-Top programming. With HBO and Showtime offering their programming directly to consumers and some sports networks (e.g., NFL and MLB) considering the same, we are concerned that we might lose subscribers. We need to know how losing subscribers would affect existing networks and whether it might impact their decision to market directly to consumers.
It would assist us if you would identify whether there are any network effects in the decisions of cable customers to “cut the cord” and networks to provide OTT programming. If more networks sell directly to consumers, how will this affect the demand for our cable television services? Also, will it impact the decision made by other networks. Finally, are there any strategic moves that we should be making to counteract this trend?
