In December 2019, COVID-19 rapidly spread across the globe, leaving a profound impact on the world. The virus first identified in Wuhan, China, quickly escalated into a global pandemic. The sheer scale and speed of its transmission caught many countries off guard, leading to widespread outbreaks and overwhelming healthcare systems. Covid-19 caused immense loss of life, with millions of people succumbing to the disease. Countries implemented lockdowns, travel restrictions, and business closures to slow the spread of the virus. Many industries, such as tourism, hospitality, and aviation, were severely impacted, resulting in job losses and economic downturns. Despite the worldwide impact it had on the world a select group of people commonly known as conspiracy theorists disregarded the virus as a hoax or government made. In this paper, I will dive into the world of conspiracy and explain how rumors about the credibility of the government developed, how conspiracy theorists supported their claims, and how conspiracy theories impacted peoples health. As well as mentioning how conspiracy theories spread, and talking about the impact the internet has had on conspiracy theories. What is a “conspiracy theory”? “A conspiracy theory is defined as a theory that rejects the standard explanation for an event and instead credits a covert group or organization with carrying out a secret plot”(Seide,1). . “Studies show that conspiracy theories tend to snowball during times of crisis, when fear is rampant and clear explanations are in short supply. They appeal in part because they offer a straightforward narrative and someone to blame.”(Latson, 2)(Move this to the end of conclusion)
Covid-19 impacts on the U.S(3-4 pages) Credibility of goverment before and during covid “These low levels of confidence in government, coupled with the broad conclusions from the Lancet study, suggest that increased trust in government could have mitigated the impact of COVID in the U.S. -- and, in theory, could do so in the future.”(Newport,5) Great article with both information about government mistrust before and during covid General impact of Covid-19 on the american people. “The vast majority of Americans (89%) mentioned at least one negative change in their own lives, while a smaller share (though still a 73% majority) mentioned at least one unexpected upside. Most have experienced these negative impacts and silver linings simultaneously: Two-thirds (67%) of Americans mentioned at least one negative and at least one positive change since the pandemic began”(Kasesel ,4).
