Question 1
[20 marks]
Select an economical section for the beam in the figure. The beam supports a floor in
an industrial building.
You may use the beam selection tables to get a trial section, but you must do and show
all relevant strength checks manually, from first principles (i.e., the relevant clauses of S16).
You may calculate the deflection at the centre of the span using case 8 on page 5-132 of
the handbook. Note that the maximum deflection is unlikely to be at the centre, but will
likely be close and little different in magnitude, so this is a reasonable estimate.
In principle, you must check all three segments, but one can be eliminated by inspection.
State which one, and the reasons.
